We’re soft meat bags of mostly water, and those other stars are really really far away. Even with the most optimistic spaceflight technologies we can imagine, we’re never going to reach another star in a human lifetime. Reality tells us that even the most nearby stars are incomprehensibly far away, and would require vast amounts of energy or time to make the journey. Reality says that we’d need a ship that can somehow last for hundreds or thousands of years, while generation after generation of astronauts are born, live their lives and die in transit to another star. Science fiction, on the other hand, woos us with its beguiling methods of advanced propulsion. Crank up the warp drive and watch the stars streak past us, making a journey to Alpha Centauri as quick as a pleasure cruise. You know what’s even easier? A wormhole; a magical gateway that connects two points in space and time with one another. Just align the chevrons to dial in your destination, wait for the stargate to stabilize and then just walk… walk! to your destination half a galaxy away. Yeah, that would be really nice. Someone should really get around to inventing these wormholes, ushering in a bold new future of intergalactic speedwalking. What are wormholes, exactly, and how soon until I get to use one?. A wormhole, also known as an Einstein-Rosen bridge is a theoretical method of folding space and time so that you could connect two places in space together. You could then travel instantaneously from one place to another. We’ll use that classic demonstration from the movie Interstellar, where you draw a line from two points, on a piece of paper and then fold the paper over and jab your pencil through to shorten the journey. That works great on paper, but is this actual physics? As Einstein taught us, gravity isn’t a force that pulls matter like magnetism, it’s actually a warping of spacetime. The Moon thinks it’s just following a straight line through space, but it’s actually following the warped path created by the Earth’s gravity. And so, according to Einstein and physicist Nathan Rosen, you could tangle up spacetime so tightly that two points share the same physical location. If you could then keep the whole thing stable, you could carefully separate the two regions of spacetime so they’re still the same location, but separated by whatever distance you like. Climb down the gravitational well of one side of the wormhole, and then instantaneously appear at the other location. Millions or billions of light-years away. While wormholes are theoretically possible to create, they’re practically impossible from what we currently understand. ------- If you could set up two ends of a wormhole to anywhere in the Universe, where would they be? Reports of widespread mistreatment and abuse have seen them branded by rights groups as a form of modern day slavery. "At first it s really tough. They ll hit you", warns a former Quranic student. "I was a psychological wreck." Like many young Talibe he had to beg on the streets to earn his place in an over-crowded Daraa. While rights groups condemn the practice as modern day slavery, many Quranic teachers, or marabouts, argue that without government assistance, they simply don t have the resources to support their students. "Neither the parents nor the government gives me money to take care of the Talibes", one teacher explains. Our planet now supports a huge diversity of living creatures requiring very special conditions, but what was the series of events that brought this unique set of conditions together? What did it take to make a world that would support human life? Naked Science takes an imaginary ‘human’ time traveller on a journey back to the moment of formation of our solar system. We meet the scientists who are carrying out their own detective work, uncovering the clues around the world today into what our planet was like 4 and a half billion years ago. Our journey begins with the astonishing story of how a giant cloud of interstellar dust and gas collapsed to form the sun and planets. We discover that the intense heat of the early Earth created a molten iron core. This generated a magnetic shield around our planet that protects us, to this day, from the sun’s deadliest particles. Many of the features we take for granted on our living planet were forged in the most violent event in our planet’s history. Early in its life, the Earth collided with another planet. Planetary Scientist Robin Canup has modelled the impact using supercomputers. She reveals that the resulting fireball was so energetic it melted the Earth and created the moon. This dramatic impact gave us our tides and seasons. We wouldn’t have life today without water. But where our water came from is a mystery that has long puzzled scientists. At a NASA research laboratory, Michael Zolensky studies a recently discovered meteorite that supports the view that water came from space. For the first half of its history the Earth had an atmosphere of methane and carbon dioxide we would find impossible to breathe. One clue as to how the earth acquired its oxygen can be found in Australia. Shark Bay in Western Australia is home to strange bacterial mounds called stromatolites. The bacteria in these objects are pumping out oxygen. A few hundred miles away geologist Martin Van Kranendonk shows us a fossil stromatolite, the world’s oldest fossil. The evidence suggests that these strange objects are responsible for creating the air we breathe.

How can building information modelling (BIM) help to create highly effective retail space? Join Andy Smith, General Manager of Future Planning at leading UK retailer Waitrose, for this short presentation on how BIM is streamlining the delivery process, reducing costs and ‘lifting the food trade to a higher plane’. Andy has a refreshingly focused take on the adoption of BIM: “It needs to be what the organisation needs it to be” he explains. “Think about the end game. Consider what the organisation requires, and then define it backwards”. At Waitrose – part of the John Lewis Partnership – BIM has not been used for the sake of it. It’s uptake by the Property Services team has been led by benefits and a value proposition that is bespoke to their business. “It’s about making life simpler, cheaper and quicker” says Andy. “How quickly can we build a Waitrose store? How quickly can we build a 250,000 sq. ft. John Lewis store?” “If I talk about merchandise availability on shelves in a Waitrose, I get the Commercial Director listening. If I talk about building Revit families he switches off”. The John Lewis Partnership’s BIM strategy is built on a foundation of standards, libraries and clear end user requirements. With this platform in place, the various elements of design and project team collaboration are facilitated, enabling further innovation to be driven beyond that. Demonstrating that Waitrose practice what they preach, Andy goes on to highlight a number of project case studies where this approach made a difference. At the forefront is the recently opened store at London’s Kings Cross, housed in a listed former railway shed to the north of the station. The complex project – a flagship store for the brand – required careful design, planning and liaison with stakeholders, including English Heritage. The image below demonstrates how key elements of the store were developed virtually, enabling both Waitrose and their project team to test proposals before constructing them. “There’s a huge amount of technical expertise behind this work, but the guys in the business just needed to understand what it looked and felt like” explains Andy. He goes on to highlight two other schemes in Dorking and Horsham respectively where working in a BIM environment played in crucial role in project delivery. Andy closes with a powerful note: “Our architects offered us a 25% fee reduction if we would build libraries and allow them to design in 3D. That speaks volumes in our business for our supply chain wanting to help us deliver an efficient strategy”. Filmed at University of Westminster.
