The morning brings temps into the -40oC, but doesn t slow up the bite as we hook into several small stocked splake. We find that our holes have frozen solid as expected and chip out using the ice saw. The morning brings on a pretty strong fish bite and the rest of the day is spent trying to stay warm over fire. I also test out my brand new gigantic hobo stove which I designed for cooking while winter ice fishing. Turns out, that it works quite well. We eat plenty of venison, rice, and even some veggies. - we eat well! Watch to find out if our minnow trap proved successful. We didn t close out the day very well, but we ended up with 6 small-ish splake that all looked like they were from this year. Not sure why they were so small. Could be a low productivity year...but usually those splake would be 12+ inches or so after have spend 6 months in the lake. Still comparable to trout from a small stream, so that s okay, they all eat the same. What will the 5D aspect of building information modelling (BIM) mean for Cost Managers, Estimators and Quantity Surveyors? Here Trevor Woods explains what 5D BIM is, how it will impact those engaged with costing and where best to start. “5D BIM is where we’ve taken the graphical 3D model and appended cost information to it to rapidly produce estimates” he explains. This has freed up Cost Managers’ time and enabled them to add greater value by validating information and verifying that scope has been accurately captured. The efficiency of the BIM workflow – particularly in this case for designers – is allowing for rapid iteration of proposals. Trevor points out that this will translate into changes coming ‘thick and fast’ at Cost Managers: “We simply have to embrace BIM” he says. “Manual methods of measuring are just too slow”. Under the conventional approach, Cost Managers develop estimates on completed designs. “We don’t help designers design to cost” explains Trevor. 5D BIM in his opinion, allows Cost Managers to quickly price iterations and provide real-time feedback to their project team peers, helping them develop proposals in line with set budgets. In terms of where to start, Trevor suggests taking an element of a building (such as its structural steelwork or duct work) and running a 5D costing exercise on that package in isolation. He recommends doing a 2D exercise alongside in the first instance to help build trust and confidence around the outcome. “Start small, plan and evaluate the software options” he adds. “Look for a software tool that will also do 2D take-offs. This way your staff can get used to the software using 2D projects so it’s not a complete new transition to a new platform”. Some things are just too good to be left on the cutting room floor and Trevor Woods’ advice to Cost Managers definitely fits that category. Trevor originally took part in “What Does BIM Mean To Me?” with The B1M back in December 2015, offering advice to Estimators and Quantity Surveyors on what to expect from the new way of working. FINALLY! I finished the perimeter walls of my Bushcraft Camp/Shelter. The set up is starting to look awesome now. Got a log seat, a-frame shelter, chopping log, bushcraft table, fire reflectors and of course the walls! It was -6 degrees overnight and when I started out in the morning it was around -3 degrees. It warmed up in the afternoon but didn t get much higher than freezing. Beautiful weather too which was handy! I also cooked some food over the firebox wood burning stove. In the next camp update I plan to get the second shelter/log store build and complete the first shelter. We brave the weather on this mini-adventure in the great white North for some trout action. We initially planned to overnight (temps down to -40 degrees Celsius), but the extreme cold puts a chill down so hard we re forced to re-evaluate our goals. After making our way to our hard water spot we erect our Eskimo FatFish 9416 shelter for which we plan to spend the night over a bed of spruce bows. After setting tip-ups for the evening bite, we cut a big hole with an Ice Saw so we can collect live minnows for bait. Like the size of the Moon and the Sun in the sky, even though they’re so far apart. Or the shape of the Pac Man Nebula or the Wizard Nebula. Or like the plot of Force Awakens and every other Star Wars movie, the coincidences are everywhere. But here’s a pretty strange coincidence, and it has to do with the nature of the Universe itself. Follow along with me here. Let’s consider black holes, a topic we’ve covered many times on this channel. If you’ve watched enough of our videos, you know a black hole is a region of space where matter and energy have been mashed so densely that the gravitational escape velocity exceeds the speed of light. We don’t know how big black holes are, but it’s possible that they’ve crushed down into an infinitely dense region, known as a singularity. Singularity, singularity… where have we heard that word before? Apart from Ray Kurzweil and his crew of technological singularitarians. That word comes up when we discuss the formation of the Universe; the Big Bang. Back at the beginning, 13.8 billion years ago, everything in the entire Universe was crushed down into a region of infinite density. And then, in a fraction of a second, everything expanded outward. Astronomers call this region of infinite density the Big Bang singularity. This can’t just be a coincidence, right? It’s the same word. It’s the SAME WORD! Was the Big Bang singularity just a really big black hole singularity? A black hole with all the mass of the Universe inside it? I’m going to admit, this question is a little beyond my paygrade. To fully explain the science, I thought I’d bring in a ringer. Dr. Paul Matt Sutter is an astrophysicist with Ohio State University and the Astronomical Observatory of Trieste. Paul specializes in cosmic voids, he also knows plenty about both the Big Bang and black holes. I’ve reached Paul on the set of his Ask a Spaceman podcast, and thrown this zinger right at him. Hey Paul, what’s the difference between the singularity that formed the Big Bang and a black hole singularity?
