How a 1990 Playboy interview exposes Trump s biggest weakness. Ezra Klein explains. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Of late, the media has become convinced that Donald Trump is going to reinvent himself as a sensible moderate as he transitions to becoming a general election candidate. "When I m president, I m a different person," he told a crowd back in January. "I can be the most politically correct person you ve ever seen." No, he can t. In 1990, Donald Trump gave an interview to Playboy magazine. Read today, it stands as an astonishing testament to Trump s consistency. Nearly every sentence of it is something Trump could have said today. But that s not to say it s devoid of insights. Toward the end, Trump offers his philosophy of life, of governance, and of international competitiveness. "People need ego, whole nations need ego," he told Playboy. "I think our country needs more ego, because it is being ripped off so badly by our so-called allies; i.e., Japan, West Germany, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, etc. They have literally outegotized this country." The UK Government have published their new Construction Strategy for 2016 to 2020, building on the progress made in the 2011-2015 version. Here, we take a quick look at the Strategy’s four principal objectives and the plans to achieve them over the course of the current Parliament. 1. CLIENT CAPABILITY The first objective is to improve central government’s capability as a construction client. That means their ability to “act in the right way” to get the most from the construction industry. It’s important to understand the context of the UK industry. A quarter of the total construction output comes from the public sector and central government is the industry’s single biggest client. That means that the way they behave, the way they ask for built assets and the type of buildings and infrastructure that they ask for, has a huge influence over how the construction industry acts and the path of progress it is on. Clearly different project types demand different approaches, but there is consensus that the principles of client leadership, early supply chain engagement, continuous improvement and collaborative culture, are common across the spectrum. The strategy talks about using the Government Soft Landings (GSL) (http://www.theb1m.com/video/what-are-government-soft-landings-gsl) approach across departments. It also mentions changing procurement routes and using things like a Cost-Led approach, Integrated Project Insurance or Two-Stage Open-Book. 2. DIGITAL + DATA CAPABILITY The second objective is to further embed and increase the use of digital technologies, recognising the productivity, efficiency and collaborative benefits these can bring. As you might expect, BIM features prominently here. The Strategy builds on the work that’s taken place up to the 2016 Level 2 mandate and supports a gradual shift towards Level 3. It recognises that BIM supports the beginning of a wider digitisation of construction. The Strategy also talks about enhancing the Government’s “data capability” and the advantages of making informed decisions based on accurate information that can now be more easily obtained with digital tools. That includes things like cost benchmarking and measures to reduce carbon. 3. SKILLS + SUPPLY CHAIN Skills and the supply chain are noted as two key areas where efficiencies and value-for-money can be realised. The Construction Strategy sets a target of £1.7BN in efficiency savings by 2020 (equivalent to USD $2.4BN in May 2016) and these areas are pivotal to achieving that. Plans put forward in the strategy include continuing to regularly publish central government’s pipeline of work to boost confidence, creating 20,000 apprenticeships and ensuring fair payment throughout the supply chain. There is also a drive to use Project Bank Accounts (PBAs); a central account for a project from which all suppliers are paid directly and simultaneously by the client. 4. WHOLE LIFE APPROACHES The final objective is to enable and drive reductions in whole life cost and carbon. The Strategy highlights the need to accurately measure carbon at both the delivery and operational stages, and to promote innovative approaches to sustainable design. Woven Bark Fibre I made a rough type of textile from bark fibre. This is the same tree I use for making cordage though I don’t know its name. It has been raining a lot here lately (the video also shows how well the hut stands up to rain) and this caused a large wattle tree to fall down taking a few smaller trees with it. One of the trees was the type I use for fibre. So I stripped the bark from it and divided it into thinner strips back at the hut. I spun the fibre strips into a rough yarn using a drop spindle. The drop spindle was basically the spindle and fly wheel I used in the pump drill video I made a while ago. A small stick was tied to the top of the drop spindle to act as a hook to make sure the fibres spun. I tied bark strips to the spindle and spun the spindle so it twisted the strip. When one strip ran out a new strip was added and twisted into the thread. I then made a loom by hammering stakes into the ground and lashing cross bars to it. Stakes were hammered into the ground to hold every first string while a moveable cross bar held every second string. When the bar was lifted a gap was formed where every second string was above every first string. Then when the bar was dropped a gap was formed where the opposite was true. So in this way the weaving thread could be drawn through over and under one way and then under over back the opposite way. The alternative was to weave by hand which would have taken longer. Collecting, stripping and drying the fibre took a few days to do. Spinning and weaving took just over a day per 70 cm square. The result was a rough material about as stiff as a welcome mat. So at this stage I’m using them as mats. In future I will investigate finer fibres, such as those from banana stalks, as a possible material for cloth. They take more processing but produce a finer product. I may also make a permanent, portable loom that can be taken indoors when it rains.
