Unveiling the Future (2010): Jewish women in Israel are opting to wear wigs instead of headscarves in a controversial move away from Orthodox Jewish tradition. Yet as a growing number of Jewish women reject the age-old tradition of the headscarf, a local battle tests Israels capacity to change. The headscarf is a defining Jewish tradition, symbolising a woman s marital status. As times move forward, more women are turning to an alternate way of covering their hair without covering themselves - the wig. The controversial issue, "This is a very divisive issue, because women want to be beautiful and look good", has been challenged by Orthodox Jews. The wig in itself has also caused more conflict, "The wig shows quite clearly who you are and what social class you belong to". This argument goes deeper than just a hairstyle - as the women of Israel stand up against tradition and social expectations. You probably didn t know mushrooms could be used to construct buildings and cure diseases. Mushrooms are being tested in innovative and imaginative ways to help society. Engineers, medical researchers, and designers are utilizing the natural abilities of various fungi for antibiotics, building materials, water filtration, toxic waste cleanup, pest abatement, textiles, and other purposes. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world s premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Tradd Cotter is one of the most vocal. A mycologist and microbiologist, Cotter owns Mushroom Mountain, a research facility in South Carolina that focuses on testing potential applications for fungi. Describing how to train fungi on "gladiator plates," Cotter explains that many fungi are so good at surviving that they are able to adapt in order to feed on otherwise toxic or non-biodegradable materials such as oil or plastics. The process is known as mycoremediation, taking in toxic compounds and reducing them to harmless ones. Mycoremediation has been sought after for for oil cleanups and expedited composting. What s more, the mushrooms that bloom from these cleanups are still a safe food source. Other collaborations include working with fungi to create portable, lightweight, sustainable products for disaster relief and developing countries. Mushroom bricks are being tested as a building material that uses water as an adhesive agent. The blocks have been tested for durability, flame retardancy, strength, and flexibility. In disaster relief packages, other mushrooms may be used to attract and trap disease-carrying mosquitoes. Mushroom Mountain and Clemson University are investigating medicinal uses as well—going so far as to create what could be a "pharmacy in a bag." The theory is that by harnessing certain fungi s ability to take in bacteria such as E. coli, researchers could train the fungi to sweat out metabolites that could combat an infection within 24 to 48 hours. Ideas continue to be tested, and those working with fungi are confident in the infinite possibilities for the versatile mushroom to solve modern problems. India s informal recycling industry has become an important business sector in its own right. Ramshackle sacks of general scrap are piled up in every corner while a group of women busily sort plastic by type and colour. Most of their income is earned laboriously salvaging any recyclables they can sell on. Despite the benefits of recycling, prejudices against informal-pickers are yet to be overcome. But very few places in the world have organised as sophisticated and successful a network of recycling cooperatives . They keep the place clean and provide employment for the poorest. The E-Waste Curse: The deadly effect of dumping E-waste in Pakistan Pakistan has become an illegal dumping ground for some of the 50 million tons of e-waste created each year. Karachi s poor earn a living from the toxic detritus, but the vicious cycle of consumption could prove fatal. In Pakistan, the massive arrival of electronic waste has created an informal substance economy that feeds 150,000 people. The country s poor salvage what they can from the cast-offs of the electronic revolution: copper, steel, brass. Nassir is one who has cashed in on the opportunities found in old cables and hard-drives. "It’s a good business. I have more and more work", he says. Yet workers pay the price for a few grams of copper; 4 million people die every year because of electronic waste and recycling workers have the lowest life expectancy in Pakistan. In his recycling shop, Akhbar earns 2€ on a good day. It feeds his family of six, but his health has suffered. "This job is dangerous. It’s very toxic". And the toxic legacy is far-reaching - "It’s a catastrophe...especially for the children", warns Saba, an activist for the WWF. "They will continue to live here and be poisoned, it’s dangerous for them and it’s dangerous for the next generations". In our relentlessly consumerist world, can the global poor be saved from the toxic trade in e-waste? Directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Robert Rodat, the film is notable for its graphic portrayal of war, and for the intensity of its opening 27 minutes, which includes a depiction of the Omaha Beach assault of June 6, 1944. It follows United States Army Rangers Captain John H. Miller (Tom Hanks) and a squad (Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns, Barry Pepper, Vin Diesel, Giovanni Ribisi, Adam Goldberg, and Jeremy Davies) as they search for a paratrooper, Private First Class James Francis Ryan (Matt Damon), who is the last-surviving brother of four servicemen. The film received universal critical acclaim, winning several awards for film, cast, and crew, as well as earning significant returns at the box office. The film grossed US$481.8 million worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing film of the year. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominated the film for 11 Academy Awards; Spielberg s direction won him a second Academy Award for Best Director, with four more awards going to the film. Saving Private Ryan was released on home video in May 1999, earning another $44 million from sales. In 2014, Saving Private Ryan was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry as it was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

After an almost five-year journey to Jupiter, NASA s Juno spacecraft successfully settled into orbit around our solar system’s largest planet on July 4 – giving Juno team members yet another reason to celebrate on America’s birthday. In a scenario reminiscent of the Curiosity rover’s triumphant arrival on Mars, Juno became the latest NASA spacecraft to pull off a tricky series of maneuvers to safely arrive at a distant planet. Over the next few months, Juno’s mission and science teams will perform final testing on the spacecraft’s subsystems and science instruments and even collect some preliminary science data. The principal goal of the mission is to understand the origin and evolution of Jupiter – which will advance our understanding about the role giant planets like Jupiter might play in the formation of a solar system – including our own. Also, New Crew Launches to the ISS, NASA Week at Essence Festival, and Survey of Earth’s Atmosphere!

Many have tried to keep a white shark in captivity. Here s why that s so difficult. ✉️ Sign up for our newsletter: http://www.vox.com/video-newsletter There are several aquariums around the world, including one in Georgia, that house whale sharks, the biggest fish in the sea. But not one has a great white shark on display. Aquariums have made dozens of attempts since the 1970s to display a captive great white shark. Most of those attempts ended with dead sharks. By the 2000s, the only group still trying was the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which spent a decade planning its white shark program. In 2004, it acquired a shark that became the first great white to survive in captivity for more than 16 days. In fact, it was on display for more than six months before it was released back into the ocean. In the following years, the Monterey Bay Aquarium hosted five more juvenile white sharks for temporary stays before ending the program in 2011. It was an expensive effort and had come under criticism due to injuries that some of the sharks developed in the tank. Responding to those critics, Jon Hoech, the aquarium s director of husbandry operations, said: "We believe strongly that putting people face to face with live animals like this is very significant in inspiring ocean conservation and connecting people to the ocean environment. We feel like white sharks face a significant threats out in the wild and our ability to bring awareness to that is significant in terms of encouraging people to become ocean stewards." Check out the video above to learn why white sharks are so difficult to keep in captivity and how the Monterey Bay Aquarium designed a program that could keep them alive. In 2008, the Large Hadron Collider gripped the world with fears that the massive machine filling a 27km circular tunnel would engulf the planet in a black hole. Doomsday was approaching according to the media, yet physicists were unperturbed. "You could never produce sufficient anti-protons [for such a feat]", explains one CERN scientist. Two years on Doomsday has not yet arrived and the machine has collided sub-atomic particles with an energy reminiscent of the Big Bang. This engaging documentary brings us one step closer to understanding the mysteries of the universe and the potential dangers in exploring them.
