It is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain largely intact. Its sides climb at an angle of slightly less than 52 degrees, rising to a summit of 480 feet. But how did they manage to manoeuvre 2.5 tonne blocks to such an incredible height without the crane or the block and tackle system? But can it really pull the nation out of poverty, and at what cost? With the majority of the population of Laos living below the poverty line, the government claims that hydropower is the quickest way to raise living standards, anticipating revenue of $80 million a year. Yet as scores of villages are uprooted to make way for the development, traditional subsistence communities are struggling. "We used to rely on nature for our living. Now if we don t buy, we can t eat", complains villager Cham Pha. The new dams also pose a threat to the ecosystem, endangering several species. Weighing up potential development and damage, the Lao people face a tough dilemma: "I m worried about the environment but I want our village to have electricity". Dyrhólaey Cape and Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach are one of the top Iceland scenic destinations. They are located in Southern Iceland near the village of Vik. Dyrhólaey is 120 m/390 ft high promontory and natural reserve with many birds nesting on its cliffs. Its name means door-hole, coming from the huge stone arch at the end of the cape. The beautiful black sand beach by Dyrholaey is called Kirkjufjara and is closed to tourists. Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach provides scenic views of Dyrhólaey, and to the nearby impressive basalt sea stacks Reynisdrangar. The Halsanefshellir basalt columns cave is right on the beach.
