Is this Nat Turner s skull? The legacy of Nat Turner continues to be rewritten. An enslaved African-American preacher, he led a small army of slaves to kill 55 white Virginians beginning on August 21, 1831. The rebellion was quickly suppressed, and Turner went into hiding. He was captured just over two months later, tried, and sentenced to death. It s rumored that, in an attempt to crush his legacy, his body was decapitated and pieces of his tanned skin were given out as souvenirs. For the past decade, what s believed to be Turner s skull has been in the possession of Richard Hatcher, former mayor of Gary, Indiana. This is not part of the French River Provincial Park, but most of the river here is bordered by crown land so camping is allowed without a permit. There are plenty of sections that are actually private though, so consult a good navigational map (Jeff’s Maps) to make sure you are not trespassing. Exercise extreme caution around rapids. Most of them are runnable for experienced whitewater paddlers, but water levels and conditions vary tremendously throughout the season and from one year to the next. For this reason, I recommend circumnavigating 18 Mile Island in a clockwise direction, as the current in the Main Channel can occasionally make upriver travel difficult, particularly in 5-mile Rapids. Spend your first night between Ash Bay and Wolseley Bay in the North Channel and your second night near Cross Island or Parisien Island in the Main Channel to allow enough time to reach your vehicle by mid afternoon on the last day. Total Distance: 70 km Start/Finish: Loon’s Landing on Dry Pine Bay or French River Adventures on Wolseley Bay Parking Fees: $10/day parking at Loon’s Landing, $8/day parking + $7 launch fee at French River Adventures. The Rayleigh-Jeans catastrophe, also known as the ultraviolet catastrophe was a prediction by the Rayleigh-Jeans law that a blackbody would radiate infinite amounts of ultraviolet light. It wasn’t until Max Planck came along and predicted that light came in packets or quanta that the field of quantum mechanics emerged and unintentionally solved the ultraviolet catastrophe.
