It would be the first time Battuta would spend a significant amount of time in his homeland since he had left to go on pilgrimage to Mecca nearly thirty years before in 1325. During that three decade period, Battuta, a well educated Islamic Scholar from a wealthy family, had travelled across the entirety of the Muslim world, and even beyond, to the Eastern Roman capital of Constantinople, and even China. During his lifetime, he journeyed across a total of forty modern day counties, a distance of well over 70,000 miles, spending a significant amount of time in every place he visited. He visited Egypt, Arabia, East Africa, Anatolia, Russia, Iran, Afghanistan, India, China, South East Asia, Spain and even traversed the Saharan Desert to arrive in West Africa before he finally returned home to recant his life story to the scholar Ibn Juzayy, who had been instructed by the Sultan to record the incredible journey for posterity. Subscribe – http://goo.gl/wpc2Q1 Ball lightning is an unexplained atmospheric electrical phenomenon. 19th March 1963, the Eastern Airlines late night flight EA539 from New York to Washington encounters a storm, there’s a sudden loud bang and bright flash. Seconds later a glowing ball emerges from the pilot’s cabin. The blue-white sphere hovers above the aisle and floats slowly towards the rear of the plane maintaining the same height. It reaches the back of the plane and vanishes. Remarkably the plane continues unharmed. But this wasn’t fantasy, this was fact and it wasn’t the first account of its kind. The eye witness was R.C. Jennison, a professor of the Electronics Laboratory at the University of Kent. Suddenly scientists sat up and took notice. Pilots in World War II described an unusual phenomenon for which ball lightning has been suggested as an explanation. The pilots saw small balls of light moving in strange trajectories, which came to be referred to as “foo fighters”. Clip taken from our documentary “Lightning”.
