I then wrap it with elk sinew from the back of the animal to create a very strong bond. Once dry, sinew turns rock hard! The bone was made by Jay Valente as a replica from a museum from Connecticut depicting a Native American scene. It was ground by hand using flint and sandstone. The hand made stone axe is ground rare pink granite. This would have been used to crush shells, finish animals or fish or caveman chopping of wood. I use the mullein plant stock (a large weed) for the hand drill combined with a poplar hearth board. I carved the notch with a flat stone I found on the spot in the forest. Other tools like the flint was send to me by Jay of Vision Quest Outdoors. The fish basket was made by live dogwood weaved to hold the fish at the proper height. It was mounted with two v-shape sticks found in the woods. This is re-wilding, back to nature, nature reconnect or "forest bathing" if you prefer! This is how you use the entire animal! Earlier people would certainly have done this style of catch and cook over open fire. Camping in the Woods like Robin Hood - Military Poncho Tent. Start your free trial today at http://www.squarespace.com/taoutdoors to get 10% off your first purchase. I head off into the woods for an overnight solo camping trip using my military poncho tent or Polish Lavvu as it is known as. This small canvas tent is great for camping in all conditions. I usually set the tent up with a centre pole made from a stick, however, this time I do it differently. Using some Primitive Bushcraft, I dig for tree roots and use these as natural cordage to tie together a tripod which supports the tent from the top and eliminates the need for a centre pole. This gives me much more room in the tent for my sleeping pad and backpack gear etc. I gather some firewood, light a fire and cook up a steak on the grill over the camp fire. I then talk about some of the gear that I use. The forest is so silent at night, it was eerily quiet, until the owls started hooting later in the evening. Listening to nature asmr was a great way for me to fall asleep. The following morning, I got the fire going again with some feather sticks and a ferro rod. Using some more Bushcraft and natural materials, I made a pot hanger to make a tea over the fire, before I packed up the camping gear and went back home. #logcabin #wildlife #offgrid Security at an off grid log cabin in the forest requires monitoring people and wildlife with trail cameras. I have several trail cameras located throughout my forested land and it s always interesting to capture wildlife and not-so-wild life. When I first bought the property, my trail cameras alway seemed to be out of batteries or the SD cars were full when the most interesting wildlife walked by. On five or six occasions, this happened when a moose was hanging around the cabin. I would wake up in the morning and find moose tracks literally walking across the front porch before it was wood covered, and signs of them eating the twigs from the maple trees all around the cabin. The same happened with deer, black bear, fox, pine marten, fisher, raccoon, coyote and wolf. Finally, after adding higher volume SD cards and lithium batteries to my set up, I started capturing photos and videos of the wildlife. Since this winter was so long, the animals have been pretty quiet for the most part, but now with spring finally arriving, the forest is becoming much more alive with animals and birds. I expect to film moose, deer, bear and wolves soon, especially in the meadow behind the cabin over the next several weeks. Cali, my golden retriever, was not at the cabin most of last year while I was building the cabin, but now that she is there almost full time with me, it will be interesting to see how she reacts to wildlife and it to her. I m concerned that since she is such an aggressive but small dog, she may get herself into trouble with the bears and canines. I ll have to keep her in check until they work it out, but once they realize there is a dog on the property, they will likely keep their distance or visit only at night when she is in the cabin with me. There is lots of habitat here around the log cabin - I rarely visit the south end of the property, reserving it as wildlife habitat. Immediately behind the off grid home, there are many thousands of acres of crown (public) land that is completely undeveloped for hundreds of miles.
