#logcabin #offgrid #winter Winter is coming and log cabin life is frantic for the next couple of weeks. I have a lot of projects that need to be finished, or ate least started before the snow starts falling and hiding the building materials. To make the wood-stove work more efficiently, I install a damper in the chimney pipe and paint it black while I have it torn apart. The ash tray underneath is leaking air so I install a washer on the handle so that it closes tighter. I finally cut down that dangerous leaning tree before I start building the sauna/bathhouse in it s path. Using ropes and log levers, I cut it down with handsaws while the wind blasts through the treetops. I level out the ground for the sauna and I start gathering and peeling cedar logs for the walls of the bathhouse. For lunch and dinner, I make rice and beans with tomato sauce, onions, garlic and hot sauce, cooked on the bbq. We expect the most fundamental machinery to have the fewest possible moving parts – or free parameters. This is why the standard model of particle physics is considered incomplete. Its equations predict many things with stunning accuracy, but they first require us to tune many mathematical knobs and dials. We need to use physical measurement to fix 19 free parameters like the masses of particles. And then there’s gravity, which doesn’t fit into the standard model at all. Though there’s an inherent logic to WASD — it just works well — there’s also a story behind how it became a near-universal standard. Dennis “Thresh” Fong was one of the first pro gamers to go mainstream playing the first person shooter Quake. By doing so, he set a standard for other gamers to aspire to, including his key control configuration. He discovered that for a new era in which the mouse and keyboard needed to work together, WASD was a great way to do it. Shortly after that, programmers incorporated his schema into their own games, making it a default that millions — whether they knew Thresh or not — would play with.
