In short: in a galaxy of hundreds of billions of stars, each of which having billions of years to spawn life and civilization, isn’t it odd that none have made themselves apparent to us. Enrico Fermi was, supposedly, using this as an argument against the plausibility of interstellar travel. If aliens can travel between the stars, why haven’t they visited? But the paradox is much broader than this. There are several ways that an advanced civilization could give away their presence. Radio transmissions, robotic probes, or star-blotting solar arrays. A series of very recent surveys of our galaxy reveal none of the above, while at the same time proving the abundance of potentially habitable worlds. The Fermi paradox has become only more paradoxical, and these surveys are finally powerful enough to draw some serious conclusions about the rarity of advanced civilizations AND about the chance of us ever becoming one. Just 33 years old and the crown prince of Saudi Arabia - who is Muhammad bin Salman? Known as MBS, he was virtually unknown until his elderly father became king in 2015. The king wasted no time in promoting his favourite son over other family members and prince Muhammad soon became de facto leader of Saudi Arabia. He was praised at home and abroad for promoting social and economic reforms in the deeply conservative country such as lifting the ban on women driving and trying to wean the country off oil. But there is another side to prince Muhammad. He has locked up thousands of people. Some are activists who face the death penalty and the Saudi media are not allowed to question his policies. The murder of Jamal Khashoggi, a prominent journalist, has caused global outrage. Once a confidant of Saudi royals, Mr Khashoggi became critical of the crown prince and moved to America. In October 2018 he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. Turkey says he was tortured and dismembered by a hit-squad from Saudi Arabia. Muhammad bin Salman may cast himself as a reforming prince but he has been reckless abroad, going to war with Yemen, and isolating Qatar. Under him, the country is starting to resemble another strongman dictatorship - centralised, paranoid, and built on fear. His promise of a new Saudi Arabia is fading. Hollywood actor Sean Bean tells the story of Waterloo, one of history’s most decisive battles. Sean’s journey of discovery is inspired by his own experiences of playing Napoleonic soldier Richard Sharpe in TV films based on Bernard Cornwell’s best-selling novels. In the programmes he draws on the eye-witness accounts of soldiers who fought at Waterloo to tell the story of the dramatic events of 18 June 1815 as they were experienced by the ordinary soldiers who fought it. He pieces together the chronology of the battle and visits some of the legendary places where the outcome was decided, including the buildings at Hougoumont which witnessed some of the heaviest fighting. He also meets descendants of some of the soldiers who fought at Waterloo, to discover how they remember the achievements of their ancestors. To bring their stories to life he works alongside present-day soldiers from the British army and experts in military history and stages hands-on experiments that bring him closer to the reality of fighting at Waterloo. At the Royal Armouries in Leeds he fires an original Waterloo musket, loaded with live ammunition, and takes part in an experiment to test the damage caused by original Waterloo cavalry swords. He works with re-enactors from the Napoleonic Association to find out more about the infantry and artillery tactics used in the battle. He also witnesses the damage caused by an original Waterloo cannon using live ammunition. In Belgium he meets the archaeologist responsible for the unique discovery of the skeleton of a Waterloo soldier who died during the battle and whose remains lay undiscovered on the battlefield for almost 200 years, in the exact spot where the soldier died.
