Starting as far back as 1571 when the Ottoman conquest changed the demographics of the island, all the way up until the 1974 invasion the Greeks and the Turks of the island never quite managed to live together in harmony. This ethnic tension was made worse by the Cold War, and Cyprus became caught up in the world of geopolitics, in which it occupies an incredibly strategic position. A United Nations peacekeeping force has been operating in Cyprus for over 50 years - the longest running UN force of all time. Nicosia is the last divided capital city in the world. As of yet, all attempts and negotiations to solve the dispute have failed. One can only hope that the situation is solved sooner rather than later, and without any further violence.

In an orchestrated slaughter, more ambitious than even Hitler s or Stalin s, they exterminated almost a quarter of Cambodia s population - old, young and babies. Today, nearly two years after the last remnants of the Khmer Rouge surrendered their arms, the victims of their genocide are still waiting for justice. So far not a single Khmer Rouge leader has been tried over the crimes. He can sing, dance and capture the stage as a teenage showman. His album has sold more than 80 000 copies in just two months. Mzambiya was discovered at the age of ten, when he appeared on a television talent show. Oscar Mlangeni, a producer, said when he first saw Mzambiya "he s gotta be a genius of some sort". The young star belongs to a new wave of South African musicians who embrace Kwaito music. The songs are raucous, colourful and true to life. Kwaito draws on American hip hop and local African rhythm and is sung in township slang. Sanctioned and Suffering (2000): A report on the effect of UN sanctions on Iraq s people. Security Council. Despite President Bill Clinton s assertion that the US has no quarrel with the people of Iraq, it is they who have suffered most under the now decade-long sanctions programme. The Iraqi middle class, once well off, comfortable, and well-travelled, has been all but decimated; a healthcare system that once rivalled those of first-world countries is in tatters; observers have seen a rise in diseases such as polio and cholera, once thought to be a relic of the past. While normal Iraqis suffer, Bagdad s Nouveau Riche enjoy meals worth one year s wages for any normal citizen. They are beneficiaries of Saddam s smuggling operation, successfully exporting oil despite U.N. border controls. The U.N. Oil-For-Food programme was introduced to stop exactly this kind of smuggling, allowing Iraq to sell oil on the world market in exchange for food, medicine, and other humanitarian needs - its effectiveness seems to be limited. While the humanitarian crisis spirals out of control, several U.N. officials are resigning, unable to continue while so many suffer. "If sanctions are not lifted, every day that passes enhances the chances that we are creating an anti-western group of people there who are tomorrow s political leaders, tomorrow s decision makers. Is that what we want? In a way Iraq has become a sanction testing laboratory - that is how I see it", says Hans Von Sponeck, who resigned from his post as U.N. Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq. Tunnel Vision (2000) - The closure of a passage way on the Norex line has left members of the seperated Mlambo clan with a 300km trip to visit kin, obtain essential supplies, or simply fetch water. As a consequence the Mlambo clan, one of the biggest families in the region, was split by the international border. But up until the end of last year there was a "hole in the border". Ironically, Magnus Malan, former defence minister and apartheid s main enforcer, allowed an informal crossing for members of the tribe. Over the years the Mbuzini tunnel became the economic lifeline of the area, as well as an access route. This concession is no more. In a recent effort to stop smuggling, the tunnel was closed. Today an iron curtain separates members of the Mlambo tribe. What used to be a five meter walk is now a 300 kilometre detour to a border post. Some members risk arrest by crossing the fence illegally. On January 23, 1960, the Trieste touched down on the sandy soil at the bottom of Challenger Deep, the deepest part of the Mariana trench and deepest point in the world. At a depth of 35,815 feet (10,916 meters), the Trieste withstood an incredible 1.25 metric tons per square centimeter of pressure, although the single plexiglass window had cracked on the way down, giving American Don Walsh and Frenchman Jacques Piccard a good scare. Yet the Trieste was not a submarine, but rather a bathyscaphe, specifically designed to withstand the tremendous pressure. Ahmad ibn Rustah Isfahani, better known as Ibn Rusta was a 10th-century Persian explorer and geographer born in Rosta district, Isfahan, Persia. He wrote a geographical compendium known as Book of Precious Records, based on first hand accounts and his own travels. His information on the non-Islamic peoples of Europe and Inner Asia makes him a useful source for these obscure regions and for the prehistory of the Turks and other steppe peoples.
