Why is Robin Hood the good guy in all the movies? Why does every single movie show Robin Hood as doing good deeds, when he is actually wasn t always so nice in the beginning? If we learn world history via Hollywood, we are in trouble, as the movie version of historical events is often a butchered slice of past life that bears little resemblance to what actually happened. The movie Braveheart, which depicted William Wallace as a near-faultless hero, has been called one of the “most historically inaccurate movies” of our time. For one thing, in real life, Wallace was born into Scottish gentry and he certainly didn’t wear a kilt. It’s also highly doubtful that Pocahontas actually fell in love with John Smith, and historians tell us it’s very unlikely she saved his life. We harvest bears at rates of 6-8% of total bear population which is not near the 10% the population can sustainably endure - black bears are NOT endangered or even close to being so. We pay money for tags and the population is carefully managed by the Ministry of Natural Resources. The highest success rates are for non-residents hunting over bait at 57%, the lowest is for residents who carry bear tags while deer and moose hunting who happen to stumble upon a bear (called still hunting) at 17%. In wilderness living, where you are in search of food, the decision is obvious. Unlike Naked and Afraid, ALONE, or Survivorman, there is no limit to the tools we are allowed to use on this survival challenge. Living off just WILD foods is harder than you think! If it s legal, it s fair use. Sometime we even do some bushcraft, but the main focus is really on eating wild foods, wild edibles and catching and cooking various foods. This isn t about just surviving, this is about thriving! Season 4: Northern Autumn, takes place in Northern Ontario with vast opens seasons including fish, catfish, pike, trout, birds such as grouse, duck, and geese, bear, deer, and moose. Also wild apples, mushrooms, berries, and so much more. We make use of all the resources in this challenge to meet the demands for calories imposed by the human body! In this episode we use the services of Mathew Hawthorne to track down a bear using dogs. Some may find this not sporting, but it is legal and bears are programmed to evade and be chased by wolves, so this is completely natural. The bears are not injured, are cleanly harvested and the dogs are not hurt in pursuit. Beaver are surprisingly easy to trap and offer a ton of nutrients to the forager. A real staple item! Beaver is also great eating, usually very full of fats crucial to surviving long term in the wild. On November 16, 1974, humans sent their first message to the stars in an attempt to contact extraterrestrials. They did this using what was then the largest radio telescope in the world, located at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. A group of scientists led by Frank Drake and Carl Sagan sent their message to the M13 star cluster. The message was written in binary code and contained information about human DNA. It also included figures of a human, the solar system and the Arecibo telescope. The idea was that if any aliens were to receive the signal and figure out how to decode it, they would know where it came from. Because M13 is 25,000 light-years away, it will take 25,000 years for any M13 aliens to hear our message — if they are even out there. The Arecibo message is only one of several messages intended for extraterrestrials. We have also included messages on several spacecraft, such as Pioneer and Voyager.
