I continue building the Finnish style log sauna in the Canadian wilderness as the temperature plummets, thankful for the warmth of the wood stove in the cabin at night. The first day is silent with no wind, relatively mild temperatures just below freezing with ravens and chickadees circling my dog and I, looking for a free meal from the bones laying in the snow around the cabin. The following morning, a powerful wind develops, ushering in a deep freeze and a few more inches of snow on top of the 30 plus inches already on the ground. I cook walleye (pickerel) for dinner one night, a keto breakfast in the morning and braised beef shank, venison loin and ground deer meat for lunch and dinner the following day, all cooked on the woodstove inside the cabin. I open subscriber mail and gifts in front of the snow while Cali, my Golden Retriever, watches, looking for her share. On this cabin build we use a hand cart tomb stone hauler to move pine trees closer to the Norwood Portable Sawmill. The idea is to use as many trees, especially dead ones, as possible to make something that people can live in comfortably. We are now working on the outhouse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6j1N5TOmBLI The most vital tools we use is the chainsaw in combination with the sawmill. We ll also hammers, axes an saws and don t shy away from using power tools when we have enough batteries to run them in the off-grid construction. When complete the cabin can be used as a homestead for living in and cooking food, sleeping and as a jumping board to the Canadian Wilderness. We ll of course need to cut and split a lot of logs for firewood to keep the cabin warm. The design of the cabin should favor a very steeply roofed structure which will shed water and snow very easily. We also factor in a wrap-around porch to make nature more accessible. In this series we use materials around us to construct a small forest cabin. We ll use cedar, pine, ash, maple, and whatever else we can scrounge up from the 30 acres around us. The aim is to avoid using as much store bought material as possible and keep the budget reasonably low. Originally we set a budget of $1000, but that included the use of a frame from an old camper trailer. As we build, the budget will remain flexible in effort to produce a cabin that we are proud of and one that will last a long while, be comfortable, and sleep real human beings. In episode 1, we dig in our "foundation" from reclaimed pressure treated 6x6 posts, level, and set the lower foundation in place which will then accept the first floor of the cabin. Winter came earlier than I anticipated this year and caught me unprepared, so this week I spent two days building a tarp shelter for the sauna and thawing out the cedar logs for the log cabin. I talk about how I was not prepared and what I learned from it.
