We continue building a viking house in the forest using hand tools only. In Part 2 we build a timber frame bushcraft style. We use a bit and brace and make wood dowels to build the a frame timber roof structure. The foundations of the viking shelter consists of cedar logs which we notched using log cabin notches (saddle notches) and we made the walls two cedar logs high. We burned the ends of the a frame and dug a deep hole down into the clay layer. By burning the ends using the ancient Japanese technique "shou sugi ban" it will help to preserve the wood and make the structure last longer. We then scavenged for a long cedar log to use as the ridgepole which runs down the top of the viking house. In Part 3 we build a viking long pit for a long fire. We use clay and stones that we scavenged from the woods. We also cook fresh fish and squid over the fire pit which is outside of the viking camp. In order to build the small cabin upwards, we first need to build the lower deck structure. It turns out really nice. Woodworking with fresh cedar makes a very beautiful and rustic final product that fits very naturally into the wild. No modern scaffolding or cranes involved, but we don t shy away from using power tools, tractors, winches, chainsaws or whatever else will free us from overwork. We sometimes even use hand tools! The Suzuki is a huge log puller until we fire up the tractor! Later we hoist up by hand, the front porch structure which are very heavy, especially with just two people and now power equipment. It s pretty amazing what people can do with a bit of effort and lots of time. Much of the roof structure is made from pine logs and spruce which is found dead on the property. The goal is to use a much materials as possible to keep the cost down. The cabin will end up being a launch point where we can get closer to nature and pursue wilderness living. In this series we use materials around us to construct a small forest cabin. We ll use cedar, pine, ash, maple, and whatever else we can scrounge up from the 30 acres around us. The aim is to avoid using as much store bought material as possible and keep the budget reasonably low. Originally we set a budget of $1000, but that included the use of a frame from an old camper trailer. As we build, the budget will remain flexible in effort to produce a cabin that we are proud of and one that will last a long while, be comfortable, and sleep real human beings.
