The canyon is a geological wonder, and has rich history, being inhabited by Native Americans for 5,000 years. National Monument since 1931. The most iconic site inside the canyon is the Spider Rock, 229 m/750 ft high. Thousands of people from Central America, especially Guatemala and Honduras, are fleeing their home countries, taking a dangerous journey north through Mexico, and claiming asylum in the US. How did this crisis begin? Much of it can be traced back to the 1970s cocaine trade. Cocaine, which is mostly produced in Colombia, used to be shipped by boat and plane across the Caribbean. But in the 80s and 90s, the US cracked down on this route, so traffickers started shipping their drugs through Central America and over land to Mexico. That created a violent and competitive turf war between gangs and organizations in Guatemala and Honduras, and after the governments cracked down, violence only increased, forcing people to flee, often to the US. In need of building materials for the loft in the off grid log cabin and log sauna, Cali and I snowshoe through the deep snow in the forest to the grove of dead trees that burned in a lightening strike, seeking out a large black cherry tree that I have had my eye on for two years. I plan to mill it into planks and beams to renovate the sleeping loft, adding storage for clothes and more. I use an axe to cut down the tree - much more exhausting than I anticipated because the wood is seasoned and frozen. In this episode we work hard to seal up more of the exterior of the cabin with live edge cedar siding milled up with our HD36 Norwood Portable Sawmill. We also being work on the ginger breading lap siding. So we really need to close in all the gaps and get the windows in. We throw in a temporary door using a grocery store plastic door opening. We look at our cabin loft and start thinking about putting in our circle window. We talk about using big cedar and why the seem to be hollow in the middle and the trouble with finding very wide planks. We ll also talk about why cedar makes a great siding with water repelling properties due to the oils they have. We ll use handtools like hammers, axes, saw, shovels and prybars, but will also use power tools including chainsaws, winches, atv s, and a chopped up SUV whenever it is convenient. We will be using cedar and spruce trees that are standing dead so we don t have to kiln dry the wood or let it season. Please follow along with the full playlist in order to understand the full construction of the tiny cabin. In this series we use materials around us to construct a small forest cabin. We ll use cedar, pine, ash, maple, and whatever else we can scrounge up from the 30 acres around us. The aim is to avoid using as much store bought material as possible and keep the budget reasonably low. Originally we set a budget of $1000, but that included the use of a frame from an old camper trailer. As we build, the budget will remain flexible in effort to produce a cabin that we are proud of and one that will last a long while, be comfortable, and sleep real human beings. Sailing trip to Antarctica with legendary captain Nikolay Litau on the yacht Mon Coeur of Paganel Studio. The plan was to get to Ukrainian Vernadsky Station in Antarctica. But due to the ice conditions we where not able to get past the Lemaire Channel. Never the last, we had to experience the stormy seas of Drake Passage, icy and sharp antarctic mountains peaks during the sunny days, and of course there had been lots of wildlife.
