Before Disco became synonymous with Saturday Night Fever, Rod Stewart, and celebrity-fueled parties, it was an underground movement powered by the innovations of young DJs challenging themselves and each other to throw the city’s most adventurous dance parties. By 1973, their influence as musical taste makers became apparent, and a handful of unconventional dance tracks became pop crossover hits. With barely any radio airplay, songs like "Love Theme" and "Girl You Need a Change of Mind" became defining tracks of the disco era. These songs were repetitive, hypnotic, and funky, and they were also pretty long compared to other pop hits. That presented a problem for DJs using 7-inch 45rpm singles, which fit only 3:30 minutes of quality audio on them, during their night-long sets. They needed a vinyl record that could make their most popular tracks sound powerful on a dance floor and last the whole night. In 1976, an accidental studio discovery by Disco pioneer Tom Moulton provided the solution: A 12-inch single. By stretching one song across 12 inches of vinyl, a format typically reserved for full-length albums, those extended dance tracks had room to breath. By the 1980s, the 12-inch single dominated pop music. It not only changed the sound of records, it allowed for music producers to experiment with length and structure. He guessed the presence of “dunkle m aterie” – a dark matter invisible to his telescope but whose gravitational effect held the cluster together. As with many of Zwicky’s predictions – like the existence of neutron stars and gravitational lensing - this wasn’t taken seriously until decades later. The hunt for dark matter began in earnest after the early 70s when Vera Ruben, discovered that the rotation rates of spiral galaxies were too fast given the mass of their visible stars alone. They should throw themselves to pieces spinning that quickly – that is, unless, a gravitational force of unseen origin was holding them together. We continue building a bushcraft saxon house in the forest using hand tools only. In part 4 we finish building the timber frame roof and build some rafters. We use log cabin notches to help secure the rafters in place. For each rafter, we de-barked the log with a drawknife to prevent bugs from breaking it down over time. This will help our roof to last longer. The bark peeling jig we made in part 1 of the saxon house build is really coming in useful now. I also made primitive pine pitch glue from the resin that was leaking from pine trees in the area. I melted the pitch down in a tin can over the fire, and then used the molten pine pitch or tar to pour over our exposed mortise and tenon joints. This will help to weather-seal the joints and prevent water and moisture from rotting them away. We also secured the mortise and tenon joints by drilling holes with a bit and brace and an auger, and hammering in wooded pegs. In Part 5, we will be building battening on the roof ready for the final roof material. We will also make a start on the walls. Thanks for watching.
