A former darling of the country’s ruling Communist Party, her songwriting was nationally celebrated and she was the poster girl for Vietnam. Today she is an enemy of the state and lives in constant fear for her life. Music has always been closely monitored by Vietnam’s communist regime. During the Vietnam war, music that did not promote communist ideals was banned. Today, the few songwriters who dare to directly challenge the authority of the regime face serious consequences. Mai Khoi started to be monitored by the regime. Before the visit of the then US president, Barack Obama, in 2016 Mai Khoi sent a plea to him to discuss the state of human rights in the country. The meeting led to police raids of her concerts. Despite sweeping economic and social reforms in Vietnam the ruling Communist Party retains tight media censorship and does not tolerate criticism. Last year Vietnam ranked in the bottom six of 180 countries for press freedom. Arrests of democracy campaigners, bloggers and activists have escalated in the past year. A controversial cyber-security law was introduced this year forcing internet companies to remove content the authorities deem to be against the Vietnamese state. Tech giants such as Facebook and Google have to hand over user data if asked by the Vietnamese government Despite constant surveillance and threats of imprisonment, Mai Khoi still lives in Vietnam and she continues to use her voice to advocate for a fairer society. One of the many horrors of the Crusades. It is August 20th 1191. Just over a month has passed since the fall of the port of Acre, and the crusader king Richard Lionheart has been negotiating with the legendary Sultan Saladin for the return of his captured prisoners. Negotiations have broken down, and Richard has brought his Muslim captives to a raised hill in full sight of Saladin s men. This account comes to us from Baha-ad-din, a Muslim historian who knew Saladin well. It is worth noting that by Saladin s order some 2,300 Christians met the same fate in Damascus a little while later. This version comes from an older translation - hence the use of the archaic musselmen in place of Muslim. How do we actually know about history? The building of the bushcraft saxon house with hand tools only continues. This time we build the door frame, wattle the side walls and build the gable ends out of logs. The timber frame structure is much sturdier now that we have built the rafters and battens or lath. It also helped that we used traditional mortise and tenon joints for the roundwood timber frame. We finished building the gable end and decided it would nice looking more like a log cabin at the front. For the back we used vertical logs for the gable end. We used pine and birch for the wattle, although for traditional wattle we would have used green hazel saplings, there are none in this area of the woods. In Part 7 we will be using traditional wattle and daub technique which was used by the Saxons hundreds of years ago. We will put the daub material onto the wattle walls and hopefully it will set hard like concrete. Then it will be onto the roof. Thanks for watching!
