A documentary about the most spectacular spring in the last fourty years. Five months of filming in the Iberian Peninsula, great forests, lakes, plains, saltworks, the awakening of the flora and especially of the fauna. We witness unique moments like the mating of the viperine water snake and the long journey into maturity of the natterjack toad. A trip along Chile’s National Route 7, the Carretera Austral, takes us into the stunning wilderness of Patagonia - a place that many German emigrants chose as their new home almost a century ago. The Carretera Austral is straddled by mountain ranges, primeval forests, fjords, volcanoes and a huge ice field. It has taken decades to carve its way through the almost impassable terrain - even now a lot of traffic is forced to take a detour across the border into Argentina. The military dictator Augusto Pinochet made the construction of the road a national priority in the 1970s, sending thousands of soldiers to the region to work under the most adverse conditions. One of the last surviving members of Pinochet s junta, former military police chief Rodolfo Stange, talks about the road’s strategic importance for the regime. German marine biologist Vreni Häussermann tells us about a catastrophe in one of the Patagonian fjords - an event that underlines how economic expansion along the route has adversely affected the natural environment in southern Chile. On our journey we meet descendants of German emigrants who found a new home in Patagonia’s remote vastness after the First World War. The Wilderness Living "Survival" Challenge is not actually a standard "survival challenge," but more like a test of the modern gatherer to sustain himself on wild foods only. We will weight ourselves at the start of the challenge and then weigh-out at the end. If we lose any weight at all, we lose the challenge! Last season of The Wilderness Living Challenge brought Zach Fowler to Ontario, Canada on my home turf, but this time we are in Zach s home turf of Maine, USA. The point of all this is simple, gain or maintain body weight only catching cooking our own food. Last season was our best so far, we managed to get all sort of wild foods from beaver to bear, duck, grouse, and more, but will it be as epic this time around? This is a coastal survival challenge! First we seek out alewife or river herring in order to bait our lobster traps. But after we run out of time, we are left only with bait. The lobster traps will need to stay out in the ocean for at least two nights. The basic idea is to trade a very bony bait fish for something much more palatable, wild, fresh caught lobster. Local, organic, wild-harvested northern waters fish paté...with subtle creek flavor notes. In this first episode of our wilderness survival challenge we search out lobster and alewife or river herring. We ll use dip nets and lobster traps in a motor boat to try to balance out our calories. I m working alone in the forest again, climbing on the roof of the cabin, carrying logs on my shoulders and using hand tools to build an addition for eating, sleeping when it s hot and storing wood and other supplies - it feels like 2017 again when I built the first cabin here on the homestead.
