James Lovelock, the renowned scientist, has died aged 103. In 2019, to mark his 100th birthday, The Economist interviewed him about why he thinks the human race is under threat of destruction—and his radical plan for saving it. Read more here: https://econ.st/2LKroSQ Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: https://econ.st/2xvTKdy Is the human race under threat of destruction? This man thinks so and he has a plan for saving it. He’s a renowned scientist, inventor and most famously he is the man who came up with a revolutionary new idea of how the Earth works. He is James Lovelock and he has just turned 100 years old. He believes artificial intelligence or so called “cyborgs” could take control, cool the planet and allow the human species to survive. James Lovelock’s work has changed the way scientists look at everything - from the common cold, to life on Mars. He invented a device that detected ozone-damaging CFCs in the atmosphere all around the world a precursor to the detection of holes in the ozone layer. His revolutionary insights about the Earth behaving like a living being - a single, complex, self-regulating system reframed the way environmentalists understand the Earth. He named the idea after the ancient greek goddess of Earth—Gaia. But James Lovelock’s Gaia is no kindly goddess protecting humankind from itself. He argues that humans have pushed Gaia to its limit and whilst the Earth will eventually rebalance it may be too late for the human race. Unless, that is, humans start making drastic changes. This is his four-point plan to save humankind. By 2050, 140m people could be forced to migrate within their countries because of climate change. But why wait? James Lovelock believes land that will be made uninhabitable should be abandoned now. Humans should retreat to efficient, safe, climate-controlled cities. According to James Lovelock humans need to rethink the way they power the world, ditching fossil fuels and switching not just to renewable but to nuclear power. Fears around nuclear energy have been compounded by disasters like Chernobyl and Fukushima. But for James Lovelock these fears remain misplaced. Global warming may be the biggest threat facing humanity. Attempts to cut carbon emissions are too small to reduce CO levels. James Lovelock thinks climate-controlling technology called geoengineering could be the answer. In 1991 a volcanic eruption in the Philippines had a profound effect on the world. The gas cloud it produced reached the stratosphere cooling the world by as much as 0.5°C for four years. James Lovelock’s boldest prescription emerges from his belief that the Earth is on the verge of a new era. One where the dominant form of life is artificial. He believes artificial intelligence or cyborgs will move beyond human control generating intelligences far greater than our own. They will be far more capable of tackling climate change than humans Homo sapiens has been the dominant species on Earth for tens of thousands of years. If the human race is to survive, James Lovelock believes the key is for it to surrender its position of privilege and give way to more intelligent life. But of course there are things that even AI would struggle to control. Where you can travel in space depends on how much propellant you’ve got on board your rocket and how efficiently you can use it. But there’s a source of free propellant right here in the Solar System - the Sun - which is streaming out photons in all directions. You just need to catch them. And right now, the Planetary Society’s new LightSail 2 spacecraft is testing out just how well it’ll work. #logcabin #offgrid #metalroof Settling back home from my log cabin tour and wildlife photography trip to Alaska, my first project is to install a new metal roof on the side porch and west side of my off grid log cabin in the Canadian wilderness, unfortunately replacing the shou sugi ban roof system in the process. Working alone has its challenges, especially when installing ice and water shield to the roof boards and handling large sheets of metal roofing as I carry them down the trail to the cabin and then lift them into place on the wood roof. Cali is happy to see me return home from my trip and immediately gets back to her fetching duties, in the forest as well as out on the lake. Thanks for watching! New videos every FRIDAY. Taroko National Park in Taiwan stretches from the Pacific Ocean to the peaks of the Central Mountain Range, rising to over 3,700m/12,000ft. The main highlight of the park is Taroko gorge - stunning 19km/11mi long marble canyon. Many hikes in the park offer amazing vistas. There are 27 peaks over 3,000m/9,843ft in the park s boundaries. Hiking trip sponsored by Taiwan Tourism Bureau - Taiwan Tourism Bureau - The Heart of Asia: https://eng.taiwan.net.tw/ - Traveling to Taiwan: https://www.mytaiwantour.com/products/ - Taiwan tours: https://www.viator.com/Taiwan/d778-ttd Taiwan, the beautiful island in the heart of Asia, is blessed with rich natural resources and diverse cultures. Over 200 of its peaks are more than 3,000 meters high, making Taiwan geographically unique. As mountains can be found anywhere, mountain climbing is a popular leisure activity in Taiwan. One can choose to hike the mountains on the outskirts of the city or accept the challenge of climbing one of the numerous high mountains, following the course of streams and valleys, tracing back to the source of rivers, or crossing entire mountains. In any case, lush scenery will unfold your eyes and it will not take too long for you to be convinced of the beauty of Taiwan s mountains. It s part of a PBS miniseries called Stellar, done in collaboration with Diana Cowern from @physicsgirl and Joe Hanson from @It sOkayToBeSmart. Over six episodes we travel to telescopes, go inside space research centers, and chat with amazing scientists. Next up is Joe s episode where he explores where life might be outside our solar system. Donuts are the all-American confectionery. They have also helped a group of immigrants from Cambodia pursue the American dream. Read more here: https://econ.st/30Olhk6 Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: https://econ.st/2xvTKdy America has the biggest immigration population in the world. The country has long attracted people in search of a better life. Among them are Cambodian migrants who fled war and genocide at home and have found an unlikely route to prosperity – donuts. It’s 4.40am and most people in the city are still fast asleep. But when Los Angeles wakes up, Teresa Ngo needs to be ready. She’s the co-owner of Blinkie’s Donut Emporium. Teresa and her dad Hugh bought Blinkie’s in 2003. Making donuts is a long way from where Hugh started out his life. But in a cruel twist of fate Teresa’s family were subjected to a violent attack. Arriving in the USA was another huge change for the Ngo family. Between 1975 and 1994 nearly 160,000 Cambodians were admitted to America as refugees. One of them was Ted Ngoy who became known as the “Donut King”. The entrepreneur made his fortune through a chain of stores. By the mid 90s, inspired by Mr Ngoy’s success there were as many as 2,400 Cambodian-owned donut shops in southern California. Los Angeles has a reputation for healthy eating but that hasn’t slowed the steady stream of patrons at Blinkie’s. Blinkie’s is now one of the top-rated donut shops in Los Angeles.
