Brick making is a time consuming process. To amass enough bricks for a large scale firing will take a long time to do. In the previous hut (that burnt down) bricks were stored inside the hut out of the rain to dry before firing. This took up considerable space within the hut. So with this hut, bricks were stored under the eves of the hut forming a temporary wall around the work space. Clay was taken from a pit and carried to the hut site. The clay was mixed with water in a pit. The ceramic brick mold (made of fired clay in a previous video) was soaked in water and wood ash to make it slippery so that the clay would slide out easily. Bricks were then formed on the floor of half the hut. When the bricks had dried enough they were then stacked under the eaves to form a growing wall. I ll continue making clay bricks and when an opportunity rises, I will take them out and fire them, upgrading them from adobe bricks to fired clay bricks. These will in theory be used in a permanent hut constructed from bricks and mortar. About Primitive Technology: Primitive technology is a hobby where you build things in the wild completely from scratch using no modern tools or materials. These are the strict rules: If you want a fire, use a fire stick - An axe, pick up a stone and shape it - A hut, build one from trees, mud, rocks etc. The challenge is seeing how far you can go without utilizing modern technology. I do not live in the wild, but enjoy building shelter, tools, and more, only utilizing natural materials. Stranded in the wild is an epic journey that buddy Kyle and I undertook in the heart of the remote wilderness of northern Canada. We fly in by float plane, travel through the lakes, rivers, and land of this epic landscape. Our trip gets extended to (then) an unknown amount of time due to forest fires and thunderstorms, the likes of which, I ve never experienced before. You can expect a new video in the series to come out each week, I m guessing 4 or so episodes until its completion. A father fights to save his daughter who has run off to join the terror organization Islamic State. For four long years Maik Messing doesn’t know if she will survive the ordeal. And for those same four years he was joined by a camera Team. "Your own child prefers to live among terrorists rather than with you, and even thinks it’s cool. That just destroys you!" When Maik Messing‘s daughter Leonora suddenly disappeared in 2015, the whole world changed for this father from Saxony-Anhalt. Maik hadn’t noticed that his daughter had been radicalized. Leonora had been living a parallel Islamic existence online, sharing experiences on facebook and whatsapp groups. The prospect of living in the so-called Caliphate held no fear for her. After leaving Germany, she married high-ranking German IS terrorist Martin Lemke, who worked for IS intelligence. As his third wife, Leonora began her married life in the IS capital Raqqa. She stayed in touch with her family back home via voice messages and social media. Meanwhile, Leonora’s father undertook everything in his power to get his daughter back to Germany: "This is life or death. That much is absolutely clear." For four years a TV crew accompanied Maik - a baker by vocation - as he met with human traffickers from Syria and negotiated with terrorists, all while trying to continue with his daily life in Germany. Any attempts to rescue his daughter were extremely precarious. Islamic State controlled not only the streets of Raqqa, but each and every person who lived there. At times, the psychological pressure for Maik Messing was so great he even contemplated suicide. The film offers not only a rare glimpse of life inside the Islamic State, but also depicts this often brutal existence from the perspective of a naive teenager. One who, in the middle of it all, still finds time to listen to German pop musi. Update July 2020: According to information provided by the German broadcaster NDR, Leonora is still in the al-Hawl detention center in Syria with her two children. Her family has taken legal action against the German government to have Leonora and the children brought back to Germany. The court has ruled in favor of the family. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic it is not clear when and under which circumstances their return can take place. It is also unclear whether Leonora will be taken into custody upon her return. -------------------------------------------------------------------- DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. The second half of humanity is joining the internet. People in countries like India will change the internet, and it will change them. Read more from The Economist here: https://econ.st/2zVWeQQ Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: https://econ.st/2xvTKdy L.O. Two simple letters that marked one of the biggest changes in human history. In 1969 programmers were trying to type “login”. 50 years later and half the world is now online. But that half is primarily from the rich world. How will the second half of humanity coming online change the internet and how will the internet change them? India’s internet penetration was pretty low until very recently with the launch of a new mobile network called Reliance Jio, with incredibly cheap phones and incredibly cheap data prices. Reliance Jio launched aggressively in 2016 offering subsidised handsets and free data to hook people in. India went from being a relatively expensive place to consume data to being the cheapest in the world. Prices crashed by 94% Newer users in the developing world are browsing the internet in much the same way as people in the developed world. When people get online the first thing they do is they chat with their friends, they watch sports, they watch movies, they watch music videos. They watch an extremely large amount of pornography. But this is where the similarities end. The internet was built on the assumptions that many users speak English are literate and are media-savvy. None of those things remain true for the second half of the internet. You have a whole bunch of languages that don’t enjoy very good support in terms of web browsers or input. And you have a whole bunch of people who can’t actually read or write. There’s practically no usage of desktop computers, laptop computers. It’s almost entirely on mobile phones and these mobile phones tend not to be the expensive, very powerful ones. They have limited amounts of storage. This is prompting big tech companies to change the way their products work They’re having to understand these new behaviours. They’re having to fundamentally rethink how they supply their services. For much of the world that is now coming online, text is not the natural way to interact. It’s smaller apps that can do more and that can be used with voice or video rather than text. Many tech giants have already begun to establish themselves in emerging markets. Facebook has over 1.5bn users in developing countries and the YouTube channel with the most subscribers is a Bollywood studio and record label. Creating large user bases is one thing making money from them is another. The prevailing assumption around making money on the internet until this point has been a largely American assumption of advertising. 99% of Facebook’s revenue comes from advertising as does 85% of Google’s. But many people in the developing world are poor. So users don’t have the same value to advertisers. Take Facebook’s last quarter of 2018. They make 12 times as much money per user in North America than they do in Asia. And overall annual revenue from the developing world is much lower too. Google for instance, about 46% of their revenues comes from the US alone and only about 15% from Asia. That 15% includes rich countries like Australia and Japan. Take those away and the revenue from Asia would be even lower. If the traditional advertising model isn’t going to work tech companies will have to think outside the box. What people will pay for is the opportunity to express themselves? Until the advent of smartphones really, a big money-spinner for Indian mobile networks was something called a caller-ringback tone. I would pick a song that I like very much and if you were calling me you would hear it, and I pay a monthly fee for that to happen. Now think about exactly what this is. I am paying money for a song I will never listen to, only so that my friends who are calling me can hear it because I want to express myself. So it’ll be lots of novel ideas like that for very, very small amounts of money but we’re talking about lots and lots of people doing these things. One thing is for sure the internet’s second revolution will change people’s lives for the better. The ability of people around the world to have a good time is becoming a little bit more equal. And that, while hard to pin down in economic data is a net benefit to just the general well-being of humankind, which can be very easy to understate or to ignore, especially if you’re used to those things but has a really meaningful impact.

Peter Lindbergh was the only German in the select group of photographers who have found international acclaim in the worlds of fashion and advertising. His black and white photographs are highly distinctive. His snapshot of models in white shirts was named the best photograph of the 1990s by Vogue magazine. But few people know who Peter Lindbergh actually was. Peter Lindbergh was inspired by expressionist German films of the 1920s and the free dance of that era. He combined avant-garde aesthetics and a down-to-earth stance to create something new and distinctive - what he called a "verité approach." Peter Brobeck, as he was then, was born in today’s Poland in 1944 and grew up in the Ruhr region after being forcibly displaced. He started off working as a shop window dresser, but then - more than 40 years ago - he bought a cheap secondhand camera to take snaps of his brother’s children and discovered his love of portraiture. His first pictures appeared in the cult magazine Twen and in Germany’s national news magazine "Stern." Then suddenly international magazines such as Vogue, Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair became interested in the German view. We talk about Peter Lindbergh with film director and photographer Wim Wenders and photographer Jim Rakete. -------------------------------------------------------------------- DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines.
