Fallout: Chernobyl s exclusion zone is the latest dark-tourism hot spot, thanks to hit HBO-series, Chernobyl. What is life like for those living and working in the site of the world s worst nuclear disaster? Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures Tour buses line up at the exclusion zone s border, while tourists await their turn to be guided through the interior - Geiger counter in hand. "Chernobyl tourism is a very positive, necessary and useful phenomenon", says Alexei, who worked as a nuclear engineer at the time of the accident. "It s useful in the sense of preserving the memory of this event." Three-hundred thousand people were forcibly removed from their villages, but the risk of residual radiation didn’t stop some from returning. Sofia went back to her village in the exclusion zone just two years after the disaster. “Radiation is radiation. It’s an invisible enemy”, the 73-year-old says. Dangerous levels of contamination remain in the ecosystem of northern Ukraine, damaging the environment and putting the area’s inhabitants at risk. Still to this day, thousands of children suffer from radiation-related illnesses. “The soil has to be removed from the polluted territory. Only then the radiation would disappear. That wasn’t done. Everything was left as it was”, says a nurse treating children at a hospital outside Kiev. Check out https://www.CuriosityStream.com/startalk and use code "startalk" to get your first 31 days free! On this episode of StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson investigates the science of pop fiction with comic co-host Chuck Nice and astrophysicist and StarTalk geek-in-chief Charles Liu, PhD. We’ve wrangled up all your fan-submitted questions on pop fiction, which Charles describes as any type of fiction you would watch or read while eating popcorn. To start, we dive right into speed of light communication. If two parties are communicating light years away from each other, how would they be able to share the same sense of time during the conversation? You’ll learn how Star Trek’s “subspace” solved this problem. We discuss how the Doppler effect impacts our real-life space communications today. You’ll find out which science fiction and superhero movies Neil and Charles appreciate given their level of, or purposeful disregard for, science accuracy. We take a hard look at the 1966 Batman movie and discuss the infamous “shark repellent”. You’ll also hear about Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!, Dr. Strange, and others. And, Neil gives us details on his cameos in The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time and Ice Age: Collision Course. You’ll hear about stealth technology and ways it could be used. We ponder the science of invisibility when a fan asks if it’s possible to disguise a city like Wakanda disguises itself in Black Panther. Neil and Charles tell us what superpower they would want that’s enabled by gene-editing. Re-visit Franz Kafka’s iconic story “The Metamorphosis.” We explore the use of artificial gravity and centrifugal force, like in 2001: A Space Odyssey, and if they’re plausible ideas for future long-term space travel. We also investigate if the quantum realm is real and if it shares any similarities to the way it was portrayed in Ant-Man. Lastly, Neil shares what his bat signal would look like. All that, plus, discover more about popcorn and why our trio thinks it’s one of the most extraordinary foods ever. This episode originally aired on August 2, 2019. I look at Michel Foucault s ideas about social and political power through a number of concepts - biopower, governmentality, and the subject. Foucault developed his understanding of power throughout a number of texts, including Why Study Power? , the lectures collected in Security, Territory, and Population , and the selected interviews in Power/Knowledge . importantly for Foucault, biopower shapes individuals as well as constraining them. Modern power is very different to the juridical power that social contract thinkers like Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau theorized - the power of the sovereign to make laws. Modern power aims to know the efficiency of a population and manage it. It creates norms and standards. It disciplines and encourages. In the final section, I quickly address a few criticisms of Foucault s work. Then & Now is FAN-FUNDED! Testosterone has long been seen as a metaphor for aggression, but is there really anything to the idea of the testosterone-driven male? Prominent scientists explain how subtle the hormone’s effects actually are. Men with a lot of testosterone have long been accused of violent and competitive behavior. Now the image of the sex hormone is changing. Unlike in the animal world, the general statement "testosterone makes one aggressive" cannot be confirmed in humans, and recent studies suggest that it can actually even promote selfless behavior. One of the leading experts in this field is Jean-Claude Dreher from Lyon. He says his laboratory experiments show that testosterone does not make men aggressive but instead allows them to act in a strategic manner. Those who are more testosterone-charged tend to be friendlier towards others in order to bolster their own social status. British behavioral psychologist Simon Baron Cohen demonstrates how testosterone determines our gender characteristics when we are still in the womb. Meanwhile, his colleague Oliver Schultheiss from Erlangen has found out how testosterone can improve our learning abilities. -------------------------------------------------------------------- DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines.

Twenty years ago, carbon dating tests carried out on the Turin Shroud appeared to prove that the sacred cloth was made more than 1,200 years after Jesus died, shattering any scientific claim to its authenticity. But now, Darlow Smithson has exclusive access to new research that proves these findings were seriously flawed and presents compelling evidence that the Turin Shroud could, after all, bear the image of Christ. This film is based on the amazing work of the late eminent scientist, Dr Ray Rogers. In 2005 Rogers published a paper claiming that he could prove the tests carried out in 1978 were wrong. The shroud did not date from the medieval period but from much earlier in fact the material was between 1,300 to 3,000 years old. Welcome to Reel Truth History, the home of gripping and powerful documentaries. Here you can watch both full length documentaries and series that explore some of the most comprehensive pieces of world history.
