Spectacular Trains: Sooty express locomotives, sinfully expensive luxury trains, and freight trains that stretch for kilometers: the most spectacular vehicles on rails. A single vehicle several kilometers long – it is only possible on rails. No wonder that trains continue to fascinate people even today, and that their fan base is one of the most devoted. The train was one of the most decisive inventions of all time. Traveling became affordable, and freight transport was expedited. Even now, 40 percent of all freight worldwide is transported by train. And fortunately so, as the train is also one of the most environmentally friendly means of transportation. From the Swiss Alps to the steppe of South Africa all the way to Japan: we present the world’s most extraordinary trains. Setting speed records on gigantic wheels: the DR 18201 is the fastest steam locomotive in the world. It can travel at up to 180 km/h. It is not the fastest of high-speed trains, but is one of the most modern – the ICE 4. Thanks to its innovative drive concept, it is more flexible and energy-efficient than all other high-speed trains. For several years, luxury train service has been booming just like the Orient Express once did. The most spectacular luxury train is the Japanese Shiki-shima. Developed by a former Ferrari designer, the futuristic train offers luxury of all kinds: piano bar, bathtub, underfloor heating, and panorama cars. Cog railways can handle the steepest routes in the world. But only one of them is built to climb grades of over 40 percent. The Pilatus Railway in Switzerland manages this feat thanks to a special cogwheel design. One of the most spectacular freight trains in the world rolls across South Africa. At 4.2 kilometers long, the Sishen-Saldanha iron ore train is the longest regularly running train on the globe. It transports 34,000 tons of iron ore in one rail journey over a distance of about 800 kilometers. In this video, I look at the first part of Adorno and Horkheimer’s Dialectic of Enlightenment: Philosophical Fragments. I takes an introductory look a the first three parts: The Concept of Enlightenment; Excursus I: Odysseus or Myth and Enlightenment; and Excursus II: Juliette or Enlightenment and Morality. The first part, through some general reflections on Enlightenment, reason, mythology, and totalitarianism, poses that all four are already intertwined. For Adorno and Horkheimer, ‘Myth is already enlightenment; and enlightenment reverts to mythology.’ In the two ‘excursus’ they interpret the Odyssey, Marquis de Sade, and Nietzsche, as backing up this claim. What makes mythology and enlightenment the same? Odysseus is the proto-bourgeois individual using his logic to manipulate nature through instrumental reason so he get home. De Sade uses his logic to get what his passions desire. And Nietzsche is famous for his ‘will to power.’ In all of this, we can see the philosophical roots on totalitarianism. Both enlightenment and mythology attempt to naturalise the universal rule – attempt to dominate the individual based on an eternal rule of instrumental reason. Even magic was an exchange – a deal with nature, with the gods, to preserve man. All are based on the same logic. Whether its the codified myth of Scylla and Charybdis. The rationality of working out your desire and convincing others to follow it – if objects are valueless – to be used for the purposes of self-preservation – why would this not apply to people too? In 1788 s Federalist 65, Alexander Hamilton considers the problem of impeachment. The process, the Constitution framer writes, is meant for offenses “denominated POLITICAL, as they relate chiefly to injuries done immediately to the society itself.” Fundamentally, Hamilton believed it was the task of an impartial Senate to decide whether or not to convict a president that has been impeached. Hamilton, however, hadn t envisioned a Senate as partisan as the current one. Still, even a broken impeachment process has its uses. The Senate may refuse its role, but through a properly designed impeachment process, the House can focus the public’s attention, send a message to the world, and create a record for the future. Continuing the series of the Bushcraft Camp Build with nothing more than vintage gear, including my only three hand tools: a knife, a folding saw, and a hatchet. During this episode I choose the best shelter location, clear the area to allow for construction of my camp (and set that material aside for future projects), and make my browse bed mattress with the GB2 Bedsleeve. This series is about a return to more traditional bushcraft skills and enjoying myself doing a solo overnight camping trip, while building the bushcraft camp with more traditional bushcraft gear. I have chosen to use vintage camping gear like an Oilskin Tarp, a selection of leather and waxed canvas items, and some hand forged items that are truly one-of-a-kind like my marlinspike. In addition, there are some items that would be considered more modern mixed in there. The focus of this series was not teaching the skills by the numbers; it was meant to show "skills in context" as they would be used in a bushcraft camp setup.
