Mega Pit Stops - Episode 3: Fighter Jet - Putting a war machine to the acid test. It is one of the most popular and best fighter jets in the world: JAS 39. The so called “Gripen” is a light single-engine multirole fighter aircraft manufactured by the Swedish aerospace company Saab. At the Czech Air Force Base in Caslav, the jet gets the biggest overhaul of its lifetime! In only 40 days, the Gripen is stripped down to its bone, everything from the ejection seat to the engine is removed and checked. The 14 Gripen of the airbase are part of the “Quick Reaction Alert” Force of the NATO. If they are not in the air, the airspace is not protected. That puts a lot of time pressure and liability to the 11 mechanics, who are responsible for the aircraft. The machinists put the war machine to the acid test. They check the hydraulic system, all moving parts and the oil – the aircraft`s blood. It is one of the most important things of the Gripen: without it, the pilot is not able to control the jet. The ejection seat – the pilot`s life insurance. The access panel is examined painstakingly – the skin. The biggest part is the engine check: the turbine is the heart of the Gripen. In the end, the weapon system - the fist - will be disassembled, so the gun is working when it is needed in action. Every fault they will find means a delay to the schedule. So the team has to work really concentrated and, above all properly, that the Gripen will be able to start in time. __________________________________________________________ Subscribe Free Documentary Channel for free: https://bit.ly/2YJ4XzQ Facebook: https://bit.ly/2QfRxbG Twitter: https://bit.ly/2QlwRiI __________________________________________________________ #FreeDocumentary #Documentary #MegaPitStops __________________________________________________________ Free Documentary is dedicated to bring high-class documentaries to you on youtube for free. What was life like in East Germany? How does the division of Germany still affect it even now? Thirty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, there are still tangible differences between East and West. How do the younger generations see them? Siblings Franz Hildebrandt-Harangozó and Antonia Hildebrandt were born after the fall of the Berlin Wall and grew up in a reunified Germany. They study in Berlin and live not far from Bernauer Strasse, where the Wall once divided the city. On weekends, they like to party at the nearby Mauerpark. Every Sunday people from all over the world come to the former death strip between East and West Berlin to enjoy an open-air festival with live music, a flea market and street artists. But the two young Berliners still feel that the wounds left by the Cold War division have not yet healed and want to find out why. Their search for answers starts in their own family. Regine and Jörg Hildebrandt, Antonia and Franz s grandparents, saw with their own eyes how the Wall was built in 1961, right on their doorstep. But they made a conscious decision to stay in East Berlin. They wanted to change the country from the inside out. Frauke Hildebrandt, their mother, fled to West Germany in the summer of 1989, shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Grandmother Regine Hildebrandt became a politician after the fall of the Berlin Wall and tried to speak out for people from the former East. But Antonia and Franz do not rely only on their family for information about the way the division of Germany influenced people from the former East Germany. They also travel around the eastern part of Germany themselves and see first hand how the decades-long schism is far from resolved. The Rugby World Cup saw heavier teams take to the pitch than ever before—England s players are on average over 10% heavier than in 1991. So what impact is the increasing size of players having on rugby? Find out more here: https://econ.st/2PJVoiS Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: https://econ.st/2xvTKdy Isaac Newton’s second law of motion says force is equal to mass times acceleration. Which means if athletes want to put in the hard hits it helps to be fast, big and strong. Collision sports have always been rough and tough but as they’ve become more professional players have become bigger and stronger which means their blows have become, well… But what impact is this having on collision sports? When it comes to professional sports, winning is everything and in collision sports like American football and rugby marginal gains can come from having bigger and stronger athletes. Twenty-eight years ago the average weight of the 1991 World Cup England squad was 94.8kg. In 2019 it’s 105.9kg - That’s more than a 10% increase. How have rugby players got so big? In 1995 rugby union went from an amateur sport to professional. Media moguls, like Rupert Murdoch, threw money at broadcast rights and the sport was to change for ever. Players had to go from the everyman to superman adopting strict fitness regimes, training schedules and diet plans all to maximise their potential. Bigger players can get tired more easily but a rule change, allowing more substitutions, meant players no longer needed to last a full game. The result has been a super breed of player. Just take a look at Jeremy Guscott in 1995 compared with his equivalent, Manu Tuilagi, in 2019. But since professionalism there have also been changes in rugby injuries and experts think this may be caused by players with a higher body mass. Between 1996 and 2000 immediately after the game went professional the rate of injuries among elite Australian players increased by 57%. At Bath University researchers have been recording rugby-injury data since 2002. They found the rate of injuries hasn’t actually increased since then but the nature of the injuries has. The research team have also found that the rate of concussions among players has increased since 2011 and now there is an average of around one incident of concussion per match. The detection of concussion has improved dramatically and this might be one of the reasons why there’s been an increase in concussion. Of course the other thing is that the game has changed and things like an increase in the speed of the game, the amount of time when the ball is in play, and therefore the number of tackles and the size of those collisions may also play a role. It’s not just rugby. American football has been rocked by reports that an increasing number of retired NFL players who have suffered concussions have developed memory and cognitive issues. A study of deceased NFL players found that 99% of them had a degenerative brain disease believed to be caused by repeated blows to the head. The NFL has faced a series of lawsuits from former players who suffered head trauma and were demanding compensation. They reached an extremely expensive settlement and to a certain extent, they’ve learned a lesson from that or been forced to. In an effort to reduce concussions, the NFL banned helmet-to-helmet hits punishing them with a penalty and sometimes even by suspending the player. Across other collision sports, there have been changes around concussion detection and prevention. These include substitutions for head injuries while a player is assessed by a doctor off the pitch. And in the 2019 Rugby World Cup new rules around high tackles were brought in which officials say have led to a 35% reduction in the rate of concussion. The impact of the new breed of bigger players goes much further than what happens on the pitch. Behind the scenes, it’s affecting the laws of the game and the players’ safety. As the supermen of collision sports become ever more powerful balancing their welfare will become the biggest challenge. The Bubonic plague, more commonly known as the Black Death due to the black ‘buboes’ that would swell in the armpits and groins of victims, decimated the population of Europe during the Middle Ages, from 1347 to 1351. As the plague s death toll increased and people continued to be struck down by the disease throughout Europe and entire families were being wiped out, plague doctors began to get desperate and creative with so-called plague “cures.” These are some of those ‘cures’ Become a Simple History member: https://www.youtube.com/simplehistory/join Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/simplehistory Copyright: DO NOT translate and re-upload our content on Youtube or other social media. Keep in mind the concept of a "national flag", is rather a modern term. The smaller states of the Holy Roman Empire is shown with the imperial standard, and Muscovy/Russia is shown with the coat of arms on a red background. The flags in centuries up until about the 19th century often were royal standards. I have a few more things to do before calling it 100% finished, including sealing the top of the sink to the cherry countertop and the drain to the sink, adding a bench or two in the change area and the porch and installing a shower head with pump from the water storage barrel beside the wood stove and the hot water tank on the back of the sauna heater. Midsummer 1361. In Gotland, Sweden King Valdemar and his Danish army attack the walled town of Visby. While the town’s rich merchants look on, a hastily recruited army of feudal peasants is quite literally cut to pieces by the Danes right outside the main gates. 1800 of the townsfolk are killed in the most brutal and clinical way. In 1905 the first mass grave at Visby was found and so far more than 1185 bodies have been recovered – many more are awaiting excavation. In this episode, Tim Sutherland – a battle expert and one of the country’s foremost medieval archaeologists – travels to the battle site to unearth the chilling story of the Gotland Militia. Malin Holst inspects the extraordinary collection of bones found buried outside Visby, many of which were buried in full armour – something that was almost unheard of at the time. And the team searches for the ‘Fourth Grave Pit- of Visby legend – can they locate the site? It s like Netflix for history... During Part Six of this ongoing series, I make some better rope to close up the browse bed mattress using some sisal twine and a bush-crafted rope spinner; a simple tool used to create rope from smaller diameter cordage. I ll also show you how to finish off the ends of the rope with a Common Whipping Knot. This series is about a return to more traditional bushcraft skills and enjoying myself doing a solo overnight camping trip, while building the bushcraft camp with more traditional bushcraft gear. I have chosen to use vintage camping gear like an Oilskin Tarp, a selection of leather and waxed canvas items, and some hand forged items that are truly one-of-a-kind like my marlinspike. In addition, there are some items that would be considered more modern mixed in there. The focus of this series was not teaching the skills by the numbers; it was meant to show "skills in context" as they would be used in a bushcraft camp setup. ========== Subscribe to GB2 Membership here: https://graybeardedgreenberet.com/membership/ I m Joshua Enyart, former Army Ranger (Bco 1/75; Ranger Class 10-96), and Green Beret (18B, 7th SFG). Here we have a Halloween special for you - Procopius Secret History, which portrays the then Emperor Justinian as not only cruel and incompetent but actually possessed by demons. Rediscovered centuries after its writing in the Vatican Library, it was finally published in 1623. Possibly the result of Procopius disillusionment or even as a type of insurance to be released if anything were to happen to him, it covers the same period of Byzantine history as his History of the Wars; featuring all the same players but completely different in tone. How do we actually know about history?
