Archive Fever is a text by the French poststructuralist, Jacques Derrida. Influenced by Freud and psychoanalysis, Derrida asks what should be included in archives, where there are gaps, and what a Freudian archive might look like. The historian Carole Steedman reflects on the historian in the archive; what are they looking for, where are the beginnings, how can you possibly do the dead justice? Derrida cites Arkhe as being both ‘commencement’ and ‘commandment’ – both a place – an original position, a beginning, a source, and a command, an authority, an order. Archives are the sites of the great chain, the contract between the living and the dead, the locus of power and authority. arkhe also comes from arkheion – a house, a dwelling, a residence. A house presumes inclusion and exclusion too. Who has the right to enter? To make the law? To interpret the archive? Who has the last word? Historian Arlette Farge has written that ‘Archives are neither faithful to reality nor totally representative of it; but they play their part in this reality, offering differences and alternatives to other possible statements.’ Then & Now is FAN-FUNDED! Sometimes the underlying geography of a place is what creates problems. In this video I take a look at those geographical factors that lead to many issues in the state.

But within the government, whistleblowing is often perilous—especially when it involves classified information. If a whistleblower goes to the media with classified information, that’s illegal. And since the Obama administration, it’s become common for the government to prosecute people who do it by charging them under a law from 1917 that was originally intended to prosecute spies for helping foreign governments. If a whistleblower files a complaint through internal channels instead, the complaint has to go through the head of the intelligence community before it can see the light of day—and after that, there are few protections against disclosing the whistleblower’s identity, and only weak recourses against retaliation. In August 2019, a CIA officer filed a complaint about an alleged quid pro quo between President Trump and the President of Ukraine. The complaint made it to Congress, and kicked off impeachment proceedings. But the existing laws don’t guarantee that this whistleblower will be protected, either.
