Ancient Gladiator School Advancing technology is leading to more hidden and unexpected archaeological discoveries than ever before. In early 2014, a team of archaeologists led by Wolfgang Neubauer of the University of Vienna announced the discovery of a Roman gladiator school, or ludus, buried at the Carnuntum dig site located along the Danube River near the Austrian capital. 8. World War II Explosives In late 2013, a pair of construction workers in downtown Belgrade, Serbia discovered an unexploded World War II-era bomb 20 feet (6 meters) below ground, where it had spent roughly 70 years sitting beneath the city streets. The one-ton weapon was manufactured in Germany and contained over 1,360 pounds (around 620 kg) of explosives. 7. Mud Dragon In late 2016, researchers announced the discovery of the Mud Dragon (Tongtianlong limosus), a 66 to 72- million year old dinosaur uncovered by a farmer and a team of construction workers in southern China’s Jiangxi province. 6. Medieval Well Plymouth, England resident Colin Steer and his wife, Vanessa had always wondered why their living room floor dipped in a specific spot beneath their sofa. They first noticed the indent shortly after moving into the home, when Mr. Steer was replacing the floor joists. 5. Mayan Mural While doing some home renovations in 2007, a family in Chajul, Guatemala discovered an ancient Mayan mural beneath layers of paint in their kitchen. Homeowner Lucas Asicona Ramirez noticed the centuries-old artwork after he began chipping away at plaster, eventually uncovering the entire multi-wall piece, which depicts figures wearing a combination of traditional Maya and Spanish garb. 4. Ground Zero Ship In July 2010, archaeologists monitoring excavations at Ground Zero -- the site of the World Trade Center tragedy in New York City -- discovered something quite unexpected underneath. A ship’s hull at the site, buried 22 feet (6.7 meters) underground. 3. Catherine De Medici’s Hairpin A four-inch-long (10.16 cm) gold hairpin that once belonged to Queen Catherine de Medici turned up in a most unusual spot: a communal toilet at Fontainebleau Palace. Archaeologists discovered the hairpin while excavating the Henry IV courtyard at the former royal residence outside Paris. 2. Roman Villa In The U.K. In 2016, homeowner Luke Irwin was laying some electrical cables in his garden when he came upon something extraordinary! Digging in his barn in Wiltshire, U.K., he came across a Roman mosaic under the ground! He immediately suspected it had historical significance. 1. King Richard III For a long time, no one knew where King Richard III was buried. Black Mamba Also called the black-mouthed mamba, the black mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) is named for the blackened inside of its mouth. It’s Africa’s longest venomous snake, measuring up to 14 feet (4.3 meters) long. 8. Terciopelo The fer-de-lance (Bothrops asper), one of the world’s most dangerous pit vipers, has several names, depending on the region. In Costa Rica, it’s called the “terciopelo” (velvet), and in Guatemala and Honduras, the species is known as “barba amarilla” (yellow beard). 7. Bushmaster The bushmaster (Lachesis) genus, which encompasses four known species, is the world’s largest pit viper. It’s found in the rainforests of Central and South America and is related to the terciopelo that I told you about. Specimens typically measure around six feet (1.8 meters) long, but sometimes grow up to 10 feet (3 meters) long. Don’t want to run into one of those!! 6. Carpet Viper The carpet viper or saw-scaled viper (Echis) genus lives in dry regions throughout Africa, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Middle East. There are 12 recognized species, who scientists believe are responsible for more bite-related human deaths than any other snake. 5. Many-Banded Krait Found throughout China and much of Southeast Asia, the many-banded krait (Bungarus multicinctus), also called the Chinese krait or the Taiwanese krait, is an extremely venomous snake measuring up to 6.1 feet (1.85 meters) long. 4. Inland Taipan The inland taipan, also called the western taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus), is endemic to eastern Australia and measures up to six-and-a-half feet (2 meters) long. Generally speaking, this species is rather elusive, and will go out of its way to avoid humans, making encounters between them and us pretty rare. 3. Russell’s Viper The Russell’s viper (Dabois russelii) has a wide distribution, including in Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and Taiwan. This three-foot-long (1 meter) serpent is responsible for nearly all the fatal snake bites within this range, and there are numerous reasons for this. For one, the Russell’s viper often lives in and around populated areas, bringing it near humans and naturally increasing the likelihood of a hostile interaction. 2. King Cobra Found throughout India, China, and Southeast Asia, the king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) grows up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) long, making it the world’s longest venomous snake. The species’ venom is not the most lethal out there, drop by drop. 1. Eastern Brown Snake There are nine species of Australian brown snakes (Pseudonaja), which are found throughout Australia, Papua New Guinea, and West Papua.
