A Covid-19 vaccine could take a long time. Some scientists are proposing a controversial plan that could get us one faster. Become a Video Lab member! http://bit.ly/video-lab With thousands of people dying of Covid-19 every day, the sooner a vaccine can be deemed safe and effective, the better. But vaccine development is a lengthy process that isn’t easy to rush, and that’s in part because of the final step in testing any vaccine: the phase III trial. Phase III requires tens of thousands of volunteers, each of whom get either a placebo or an experimental vaccine. The problem is the next part: Vaccine developers have to wait until a statistically significant number of them, going about their lives normally, eventually get naturally infected. This can take years. To speed that up, some epidemiologists and scientists are calling for something called a human challenge trial, in which a subject who has been given the vaccine is deliberately infected. This isn’t a new concept; human challenge trials have been used to develop vaccines or treatments for lots of diseases, like cholera, typhoid, malaria, influenza, and common cold viruses. But what sets Covid-19 apart from those diseases is that it currently has no effective treatment. Because it’s so new, we also aren’t fully aware of its long-term health effects. Unlike other human challenge trials, a Covid-19 challenge trial would entail a risk of serious illness — and even death. It’s because of those risks that a Covid-19 challenge trial would be limited to the young and healthy, who would be at the lowest risk of harm. But there are questions beyond the ethics. Would artificially infecting someone in a lab setting provide useful information on how to prevent natural infection? Would a study performed on only young and healthy people produce a vaccine that works for everyone? And with some vaccines already far along in their phase III trials, would a human challenge trial do any good at this point? Even though no Covid-19 human challenge trials are currently planned, more than 30,000 people from nearly 150 countries have already said they would volunteer for one if the opportunity presented itself. The question is, should we let them? Note: The headline on this piece has been updated. Previous headline: Would you volunteer to get Covid-19? With many of Africa’s key species, including elephants, heading toward extinction, Akashinga is a radical, new and highly effective weapon against poaching. Founded in Zimbabwe by former Australian special forces soldier and anti-poaching leader Damien Mander, the women-only team of rangers is revolutionizing the way animals are protected, communities are empowered — and its members’ own lives are being transformed. Mander’s innovative approach to conservation calls for community buy-in rather than full-on armed assault against poachers: If a community understands the economic benefits of preserving animals, then it will eliminate poaching without an armed struggle. Executive produced by three-time Academy Award winner James Cameron and directed by Maria Wilhelm, AKASHINGA: THE BRAVE ONES is a celebration of the courage, conservation and unorthodox thinking that’s leading to massive positive change. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world s premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Cool things happen at low temperatures. In this StarTalk explainer, we’re cooling things down – way down. But how cold can we actually get? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice investigate the limits of temperature and a lot more. You’ll learn why there’s really no limit of how hot you can make something. On the flip side, we dive into why making things colder is a different story. How do you create a place where there is no heat? You’ll find out more about the Kelvin scale or absolute temperature scale. Neil takes us through the process of cooling things down. Discover the differences between temperature and heat energy. We explore the vibration of particles and dip our toes into Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution. Then, Neil tells us why we can never philosophically or theoretically reach absolute zero. To wrap things up, we investigate what happens when quantum physics take over. Discover more about superfluidity. All that, plus, you’ll hear about the Bose–Einstein condensate and how we can “shape-shift” matter. The Roman legionary fort of Caerleon in South Wales is one of the most famous and best preserved Roman sites in Britain. It stood on the edge of the Roman Empire, its huge amphitheatre, immense baths, and the scale of its ruined walls all testament to its power and importance. We continue using ancient medieval building techniques to build our iron age celtic roundhouse. This time we focus on the interior walls, using the traditional wattle and daub technique. The daub being a mix of clay, straw, ash and water. We mix it together and put it on the wall by hand. With the walls almost complete, the next step will be to reinforce the roof ready for thatching. We then cook handmade pizza over the fire in a dutch oven. Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe to follow each episode of the celtic roundhouse build! Individuals have rights, and there are things no person or group may do to them (without violating their rights). This is American philosopher Robert Nozick’s bold pronouncement at the beginning of anarchy, state, and utopia, a 1975 book that is largely a response to Rawl’s 1971 A Theory of Justice. It s the classic modern defense of libertarian political philosophy. For Nozick, the rights that individuals have are natural, of fundamental importance, and completely, universally, unequivocally inviolable. These rights, he argues, must be respected at all costs. They aren’t designed by institutions, or dreamed up by revolutionaries, written into contracts and protected by lawyers. They are part of being human. How then is a state justifiable? Taxation, the rule of law, a system that forces its citizens to pay for roads, schools and hospitals is surely a violation of an individual s natural rights as a human to be free to make their own choices. ‘Boundary crossing’, as Nozick calls it, crossing the line and infringing upon a person s freedom, is surely only permissible with consent. This, loosely, is the position of the anarchist. The anarchist argues that because of the inviolability of individuals, no state can be justified. For Nozick, this is the fundamental question of political philosophy: whether there should be any state at all. He wants to justify what he calls a minimal state. One that simply protects an individual’s right to freedom, and nothing else. He wants to argue that this is both justified philosophically, and, could develop from a state of nature historically.

I catch, clean, and cook a delicious fresh caught super deep water summer lake trout caught on a jig from a canoe way up in Northern Ontario. Mystery Tackle Box: https://mtbfish.com/bearded-woods [Use Code "BEARDSMAN" for your discount!] For Part 2 (coming Friday): https://youtu.be/E47QPWQZCTs My family and I portage back 3 lakes in a chain of lakes from bass, to rainbow, to lake trout in search of epic solitude in a remote part of northern Canada. The lake trout is a very elusive fish that prefers depths of 100 feet or more in the lake summer. They are very difficult to catch, especially without down riggers and expensive gear - but with knowledge, skill, and persistence, I manage to catch and epic meal. I will use a 3/8 ounce jig tipped with a vile bait plastic, doubled up with an additional treble hook for added hook power. I also prefer the simplicity of a spin reel and light rod. Jigging is best done when the weather is calm, or your jig will be carried up in the water column, too high for summer lake trout. The idea is to stick close to the bottom of the lake, as lake trout are bottom dwellers. The trout is cooked on the sandy beach with fresh live alder branches, and smoked to perfection. We also pair up with smoked bacon, woodobo spices, and some bagels to complete an epic shore lunch.
