I test my survival skills in the Canadian forest to survive with just the things I carry in my small backpack. I ll survive with just a knife, saw, and my 22 long rifle. I ll shoot a grouse, pluck and cook it over an open fire and build a shelter with materials I find in the woods. I ll build a simple lean-to shelter with sticks, and make an epic fire to cook wild edibles I find in the forest. I m fortunate to find some fall wild foods including black walnuts, and apples, though they are a little far gone to be completely seasonal. So I cook them and dry them over the fire to make them edible. Thankfully I find a stream to purify water, but I also show you you can drink water from snow. Primitive challenge with a few simple basic tools. I will show you how to start a fire using primitive techniques and cook a wild grouse over an open fire. Survival is all about making the best of a bad situation. Staying warm and dry is the key to staying alive. After survival is taken care of, it s all about making your situation even better. Finding food, water, and making a shelter is a must to create ultimate survival comfort. I use a saw and basic tools to make a bushcrafter shelter in the Canadian forest using materials around us like tree branches and dried grass. That leaves about two and a half months in between, where, in situations where the incumbent has been voted out, the winner of the election still isn’t president. This is the “transition” period, during which the old administration trades places with the new one. But does that period really need to be so long? In 2020, we found out what happens when an incumbent president loses reelection, but refuses to concede: Among other things, it pushes the start of the transition several weeks later, shortening that handover period. This mysterious labyrinth, once connecting the majority of the city’s most prominent buildings. Has sat in abandonment and disarray for the better part of a century – today, we will uncover the forgotten story of the Chicago Tunnels. Around the turn of the century, the City of Chicago was one of the most congested urban spaces in the United States of America. Chaos, might even be the most proper word to describe it. Between the horse drawn carts, were street cars gridlocked by the pedestrians moving in every direction. And although the city attempted to alleviate these issues in 1892, with the introduction of elevated rapid transport, known locally as “the L” the foundation of the new track structure obstructed valuable curb areas otherwise useful for loading. On some streets, the train commuters indeed saved time – but cargo loading guaranteed lane blockage – reeking havok on the trolly cars making their way through out the loop. And as if that was not already enough to cause high blood pressure, factors were grossly compounded by another component known as coal. You see, Coal was a primary power source for Chicagoan’s, and demand was abundant. Looking back, It’s Almost ironic to consider that the city literally emerged from ash to become covered in ash. The delivery of coal was a massive element of the cargo logistics impeding the cities quality of life. Not only jamming up already overcrowded streets, but dirtying them with the removal of its byproduct – ash. Even the Chicago Tribune gave its warning in 1874, that the huge increase in factories, hotels, and new skyscrapers with their steam-powered elevators, was a serious problem. On journilist argued "So dense is this volume of smoke that, unless there is a brisk, stirring breeze, the whole of it settles down in the central part of the city and leaves its dirty imprint,". From todays prespetive, this type of commentary presents strong contrast to the tourist praised city of glorious architecture that we know today. Another example comes from, author Rud-yard Kip-ling who was quoted on Feb. 8, 1891 in simply saying that “Chicago’s air is dirt”. News paper editors crusaded tirelessly against the "smoke horror." Proclaiming that "The city will shortly be blackened in appearance, new as it is, and grow unhealthier”. And although there was not a great solution for the so called “air of dirt” – containment of the ash and resulting congestion of the street could be addressed by moving it all 40 feet underground. Jackson, As the Illinois Telephone and Telegraph company built the first 26 miles of tunnel to hold telegraph and telephone cables. In 1899, a narrow-gauge railway was laid with in the tunnels with excavation, However, the project stalled after the Company ran out of money. And this is when things became interesting. When oil was discovered in Ghana in 2007, the country began to dream big. It dreamed that the ‘black gold’ would bring economic upswing and long-awaited prosperity to its nation. But what happens when dreams and globalization meet? The global economy continues to rely on oil — but the so-called ‘black gold’ is becoming scarce. If a country has oil, so we tend to believe, it has all it needs to become a wealthy country. When oil was discovered in Ghana in 2007, Ghanaians also believed that economic prosperity would soon sweep over their country. By 2010, drilling had started. Ghana was determined to do better than Nigeria, a country that exports oil, but has to import gasoline. This documentary, shot over a period of ten years, is a case study of globalization. Filmed in a coastal region where people lived off fishing and rubber cultivation for decades, it shows the impact the oil discovery has had on their lives. Would the promises come true? Would the ‘black gold’ bring modern life and progress, paved streets, electricity and jobs even to small villages? Filmmaker Elke Sasse and journalist Andrea Stäritz spent ten years documenting the developments on Ghana’s western coast. The Calixtlahuaca Head Discovered by archaeologist José García Payón in 1933, the Calixtlahuaca head is a terracotta head featuring alleged Roman features that was found oddly out-of-place in Mexico’s Toluca Valley. 9. Prehistoric Storytelling The late 2019 discovery of a cave painting on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi is thought to be the oldest known example of one of the most important things that makes us human, a recorded story. 8. Ancient Expert Beekeepers We all know that bees are extremely important to our ecosystem and even survival, and so did ancient people. A 2017 study revealed the discovery of ancient honeycombs at the Forcello archaeological site in northern Italy, citing them as evidence of ancient beekeepers once inhabiting the region. 7. Chinese Artifact In North America An amateur artifact hunter was out strolling on the banks of a stream in Georgia in the United States when he supposedly found a partially exposed ancient Chinese sword. 6. New Extinct Hominid Species The history of humans and our closest genetic relatives is confusing at best, and researchers are a far cry from fully disentangling theory from fact. But as they continue to dig for new information, both literally and figuratively, experts are slowly chipping away at our mysterious shared past. 5. New Dead Sea Scroll Text Earlier this year, researchers realized that a series of Dead Sea Scroll manuscript fragments previously thought to be blank actually contain text. The discovery is remarkable, especially considering the amount of forgeries that have been identified over the years. 4. Who Built the Great Pyramids A cluster of 4,000-year-old burials near the Giza pyramids, outside modern-day Cairo, suggest that the iconic structures were not built by slaves, as popular legend holds, but instead by paid laborers. 3. Inca Child Sacrifice Researchers have long known that human sacrifice was a big part of the Inca culture, but their understanding of the methods involved is incomplete. The 1999 discovery of three remarkably preserved mummified children near the Andean summit of Volcán Llullaillaco (yu-yai-yaco) in modern-day Argentina helped to bring experts one step closer to understanding some of the circumstances under which the ancient civilization sacrificed people. 2. The Great Library Of Alexandria The burning of the Great Library at Alexandria in northern Egypt is one of history’s best-known travesties. Founded in 283 B.C., it was once the ancient world’s largest library, housing over 100 full-time scholars and containing texts by renowned thinkers and writers such as Homer, Plato, and Socrates. 1.
