Masada Masada is an ancient stone fortress, located high above the Dead Sea, 1,300 feet (400 meters) above sea level. The 840-acre (340 hectares) complex sits on a tall, isolated rock plateau in Israel, and the fortress was built between 37 and 31 B.C. by Herod the Great, King of Judea himself. 8. Gamsutl The Russian Republic of Dagestan, located along the Caspian Sea, is home to the abandoned mountaintop village of Gamsutl. Nobody knows for sure when it was built, but it’s clear by the appearance of the now crumbling ruins that the former settlement is very, very old! 7. Castellon Alto Nicknamed the Andalucian Acropolis, Castellón Alto is a Bronze Age fortified settlement on the Iberian Peninsula in southern Spain that belonged to the Argaric culture. It dates back to around 1900 B.C. and is located in what is now Granada’s Altiplano region. 6. Timgad Timgad, also called Thamugadi and nicknamed the “Algerian Pompeii,” was a Roman city and military settlement in Algeria’s Aurès Mountains. Located in what is now the province of Mumidia, Timgad was founded around 100 A.D. by the emperor Trajan. 5. Cliff Palace Located in Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado, the Cliff Palace is North America’s largest cliff settlement. Occupied from 1190 to 1260 A.D., it was home to an ancient Palaeo-Indian people known as the Ancestral Pueblans or the Anasazi. 4. La Ciudad Perdida La Ciudad Perdida, Spanish for “The Lost City,” is an archaeological site situated deep in Colombia’s Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains. Researchers believe that the Tayrona people founded the remote mountainside settlement around 650 years earlier than the famed Machu Picchu, around 800 A.D. 3. Craco Located on a summit 1,312-feet (400 meters) tall, about 25 miles (40 km) inland in southern Italy’s Matera province, the ghost town of Craco dates as far back as the eighth century B.C. The Greeks moved in around 540 A.D., calling the town “Montedoro”. 2. Sewell Ghost Town Informally known as the “City of Stairs,” Sewell is a former mining town that sits over 7,220 feet (2,200 meters) above sea level. Located in the Chilean Andes, directly above the world’s largest underground copper mine it was built on a steep, barren slope. 1. A growing number of people who recover from COVID-19 are experiencing long-term health problems. This includes younger patients without pre-existing conditions who had only mild symptoms with the virus. How are doctors and patients responding? The COVID-19 disease is triggered by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and can affect multiple organs. The symptoms of the initial illness are now well known. But what about the long-term effects of coronavirus? Not everyone who gets COVID-19 makes a full recovery afterwards. A growing number of people are experiencing reduced physical and abilities and cognitive symptoms. One such patient is 31-year old junior doctor Maria. Five months after falling sick, she is still unable to work normally. In October, Germany’s University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein launched the largest study to date on the long-term effects of coronavirus. Teams of doctors specialized in various fields of medicine are planning to examine several thousand former COVID-19 patients who have officially "recovered" from the virus. They’re looking in particular at the lungs, heart, kidneys and liver, as well as the nervous system and metabolism. Christopher Bley from Berlin would welcome the opportunity to be included in a study like that. The 35-year-old feels he isn’t getting the support he needs from doctors. Ever since the father of two contracted the virus, he has been battling shortness of breath. For a long time, he hoped he would heal naturally, but the problem persists. Writer Nina Marewski from Frankfurt feels similarly let down by doctors. She says they either ignore her or don’t take her seriously. She has been writing about her experience with coronavirus online, and is giving a voice to other post-COVID "long haulers". This documentary accompanies three people who are struggling with the aftereffects of the virus. I part 2 of this winter survival challenge we test our survival skills in the Canadian forest to survive with just the things we carry in my small backpack. I ll survive with just a knife, saw, axe, rope, and some wire! I ll try to shoot or snare grouse or snowshoe hare and cook it over an open fire and build a primitive lean to shelter with materials I find in the woods. I ll build a simple lean-to shelter with sticks and spruce or balsam bows, and make an epic fire to cook wild edibles I find in the forest. We experiment with eating birch tips like a rabbit, but mostly we use this to bait them in. The winter offers sparse resources generally, as most things have either died off, or been burred by the snow. Deer have moved off to winter yarding areas, and bears are deep asleep in their dense. However, some small game still lurks around trying to stay away from frostbite and carry on with the rest of the living. Thankfully there is plenty of snow to make water, but first a fire is needed to survive as eating snow cools the body and is difficult on the body s system. Thankfully we have a small billy can or steel water pot for boiling water. Primitive challenge with a few simple basic tools. I will show you how to start a fire using primitive techniques and cook a wild grouse over an open fire. Survival is all about making the best of a bad situation. Staying warm and dry is the key to staying alive. After survival is taken care of, it s all about making your situation even better. Finding food, water, and making a shelter is a must to create ultimate survival comfort. I use a saw and basic tools to make a bushcrafter shelter in the Canadian forest using materials around us like tree branches and dried grass. I attempt a friction fire using primitive technology - a cedar spindle, hearth board, and some birch bark and cedar shavings for a tinder bundle. Can I get a fire lite in tough conditions? VR doesn’t need to look hyper-realistic for our brains to believe it. Watching someone play a game in virtual reality is a bit of a surreal experience in itself. They swing their arms around, turn their heads, and twist their bodies reacting to invisible cues all around them. From outside the headset, you might be able to see their experience on a screen.
