Alexa s recording you. What’s she doing with it? Read Sara’s article about the privacy settings on your smart speaker: https://www.vox.com/recode/2020/12/9/22160427/amazon-alexa-google-assistant-siri-holidays Correction: At 0:58, we mistakenly suggest that every 1 in 5 American households has a smart speaker. In fact, over one-third of U.S. adults has a smart speaker. We regret the error. In 2014, Amazon debuted a simple but industry-changing product: the smart speaker. Technically the Amazon Echo was just a microphone attached to the internet that you installed in your home. But it let users ask a digital assistant, Alexa, thousands of questions and commands, and it was a hit. Before long, Google and Apple followed with their own smart speakers, and today, a device that began as a curiosity has become commonplace: one in five US households now owns a smart speaker. Smart speakers offer convenience; much of their popularity can simply be chalked up to that. But tech companies are also clearly pushing the technology onto consumers hard, sometimes selling smart speakers at rock-bottom prices, and building the “listening” technology that drives them into all sorts of other products, from headphones to doorbells. And a big reason for that is all the data that they produce. Just like our web searches, online purchases, and social networks, every command you give to a smart speaker is a new piece of data that tech companies own. Most likely, your voice recordings are already being used for improving those companies’ listening algorithms and ad targeting, but there’s very little transparency and no way to know exactly how they use human voice data. All we really know is that these devices have enabled their manufacturers to collect gigantic troves of voice recordings — and that opting out of it isn’t always easy. Two film crews explore the spectacular wilderness of the Arctic. The people who live there face dramatic changes. Part two takes viewers from East Greenland to Alaska. The region around the North Pole is one of the greatest and least-known wildernesses in the world - and it’s rapidly changing due to global warming. 350 people, most of them Inuit, live in Ittoqqortoormiit in Greenland. The nearest settlement is on neighboring Iceland. Almost 800 kilometers of Arctic Ocean separate the two islands. The film team accompanies an Inuit family through Scoresby Sound, a fjord system on the eastern coast of Greenland. They travel hundreds of kilometers in small boats through pack ice, passing icebergs as high as skyscrapers. On the way they meet whalers who are hunting for narwhals in summer. In this Inuit culture, narwhal skin and polar bear goulash have ensured survival for thousands of years. Greenpeace and WWF activists want to stop whaling and polar bear hunting - but this poses a threat to the indigenous way of life on Greenland. On the expedition through the world s largest fjord system, the team learns about the consequences of global warming: melting permafrost and a rapid increase in greenhouse gases. The changes are worrying. Some say they have brought benefits to the far north — the ice breaks up earlier and so too does the hunting season. However, the risks outweigh this benefit. The knowledge and way of life that have been passed down from generation to generation may soon be unsustainable. ------------------------------------------------------------------- DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. The Arctic is one of the most fascinating regions on our planet, and one of the most threatened. Two film crews explore its spectacular wilderness in a two-part documentary. Part one takes viewers from Norway’s Svalbard archipelago to Siberia. The region around the North Pole is one of the greatest and least-known wildernesses in the world, and it’s rapidly changing due to global warming. The retreat of Arctic sea ice can be observed everywhere along the Arctic Circle, presenting those who live there with dramatic changes. This documentary takes viewers on a journey through the Arctic circle and explores those changes. It begins in Norway’s Svalbard archipelago, a place to see one of nature’s most spectacular displays — the northern lights. With the ice retreating, cruise ships can now travel further north than was previously possible. This places a strain on the fragile ecosystem. But more visitors may also mean more awareness about the risks that face the region, and more motivation to protect the Arctic. But as if often the case, protecting nature in the Arctic is at odds with economic interests. Russia, in particular, is keen to sell Arctic fossil fuels to the rest of world. The film next takes viewers to the gas-rich Yamal Peninsula in northwestern Siberia, where the Russian company Novatek has built the northernmost industrial facility on the globe. Further East in Yakutia, two noises fill the air: the relentless buzzing of mosquitoes that infest the Siberian tundra in summer, and the steady dripping of the thawing permafrost on the banks of the Kolyma River. The film’s journey ends in Chukotka in the northeast of Russia, a region closer to Alaska than to the Russian capital Moscow. ------------------------------------------------------------------- DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Bolshoi Zayatsky Labyrinths Bolshoi Zayatsky Island is part of Russia’s isolated Solovetsky archipelago. Less than 1,000 people live throughout the remote group of six islands, which are situated in the northern part of the country, just 103 miles (165 km) south of the Arctic Circle. 9. The Astronaut Of Casar A stele, or upright stone slab, on display at the Caceres Museum in Spain, has been dubbed the “astronaut of Casar.” It shows a humanoid figure with bizarrely bulbous shoulders and a misshapen head, leading many to question its origins and inspiration. 8. Unusual Child Burial Half a century ago, archaeologists discovered a child’s remains in Tunel Wielki Cave in Poland’s Sąspowska Valley. Without taking note of some extraordinary aspects of the burial, they placed the bones into storage, where they were forgotten for decades. But there was something pretty strange about them. 7. Connecticut’s Earliest People In early 2019, workers discovered evidence of southern New England’s first human inhabitants while doing bridge construction above the Farmington River. The find came as no surprise to archaeologists, who had long suspected the presence of historic sites in the area, but is fascinating nonetheless. 6. Kasta Tomb The location of Alexander the Great’s tomb is a long-standing mystery, but a team of archaeologists may have come one step closer to finding answers at the Kasta Hill archaeological site roughly 370 miles (595 km) north of Athens, Greece. 5. The Riace Bronzes The Bronzi di Riace, or Riace bronzes, also called the Riace Warriors, are a pair of full-sized Greek statues depicting naked bearded warriors. They represent two of just a handful of surviving full-size Ancient Greek bronzes, as most were melted down and reused, thereby being lost to history. 4. Europe’s Earliest Humans The history of early modern human migration out of Africa is nothing short of confusing, as archaeological discoveries continuously challenge previously held notions of when and where our ancestors first traveled. 3. Barbegal Mills Located near the town of Arles in southern France, Barbegal Mills has a reputation for being the “greatest known concentration of mechanical power in the ancient world.” Widely regarded as one of the world’s first industrial complexes, the second-century Roman watermill produced enough flour for as much as one-quarter of Arles’ population during its operation. 2. Neanderthal Parenthood There’s a lot we don’t know about our prehistoric cousins, the Neanderthals, but discoveries in recent years show that we often mistakenly think of these ancient relatives as being stupid, or at least primitive, compared to early humans. 1. Labyrinth of Legend Of all the labyrinths in the world, the most famous has to be the one from the legend of the Minotaur, the bull monster who was confined to the labyrinth on the Island of Crete. #mysteriousdiscoveries #recentdiscoveries #archaeologicalfinds #originsexplained
World s Most Dangerous Roads: Deadliest Journeys in Kazakhstan 2016 Deadliest Roads - Ethiopia: https://youtu.be/H32HHPJclF4 In Kazakhstan, a country in Central Asia located between China and Russia, everything is tough: the climate, the vast steppes dotted with oil wells, even the character of the inhabitants, descendants of the Mongols and Genghis Khan who have adapted to withstand all of nature’s challenges. Filmed at the backend of winter, this film takes us into the centre of a snowstorm. Thousands of travellers find themselves caught in an enormous traffic jam, the least fortunate of whom are stuck in the mud, victims of a sudden thaw. We meet farmers and camel breeders who rely on hostile land. The Aral Sea, now completely dried out due to the overexploitation of it’s water during the Soviet period, has given place to a dessert made up of sand, salt, and dust that’s toxic to the inhabitants. On this truly extreme journey we are accompanied by endearing people who never let their struggles crush their spirit or dignity. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Subscribe Free Documentary Channel for free: https://bit.ly/2YJ4XzQ Join the club and become a Free Documentary Patron: https://www.patreon.com/freedocumentary Facebook: https://bit.ly/2QfRxbG Twitter: https://bit.ly/2QlwRiI ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ #FreeDocumentary #Documentary #MostDangerousRoads ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Free Documentary is dedicated to bringing high-class documentaries to you on YouTube for free.
