A Polish businessman risked his life to film everyday life in the Warsaw Ghetto. These harrowing 8 mm movies were stored for decades in archives, and are shown publicly for the first time in this documentary. The original title of the film is "Warsaw: A City Divided", directed by Eric Bednarski. The Warsaw Ghetto was located in the heart of the Polish capital. In November 1940, one year after Germany invaded Poland, the occupation authorities completed work on a three-meter-high wall that surrounded the ghetto. The Jewish residents were sealed off from the outside world. The ghetto was intended to serve as a concentration camp for Jews from all over Europe. They would later be deported to the extermination camp at Treblinka. As many as 500,000 people were rounded up and herded into the ghetto. The films shown in this documentary portray the daily lives of those who lived there. Food and clean water were in short supply. The Germans demolished the ghetto in May 1943, and sent the residents to concentration- or extermination camps. Today, a series of memorial plaques marks the district s boundaries. In this documentary, witnesses describe what life was like in Warsaw before the German invasion, and provide graphic accounts of life in the ghetto. ------------------------------------------------------------------- DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. With a dense coat, a powerful mass of muscle and a large head ideally suited for clearing away snow and locating buried grass, bison are built for frigid conditions in Yellowstone. If it wasn’t for a hidden herd in the deepest reaches of this National Park, bison would have been wiped out in the late 1800s. Today, thousands of them thrive. From venom to electrocution to some of the most highly specialized predators on Earth, here are 9 of the most dangerous fish in the world. Sawfish Also called carpenter sharks, these creatures are actually a family of rays that have a long, narrow rostrum, or snout extension, lined with sharp teeth that looks somewhat like a chainsaw. And they can get huge!! Some species reach up to 25 feet (7.6 meters) long, classifying them as some of the world’s largest fish. 8. Barracuda The barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) can be pretty intimidating. This tropical species is not only large, reaching up to five feet (1.5 meters) long and sometimes weighing over 100 pounds (45 kg), it’s also extraordinarily fast, effortlessly sprinting from zero to 35 miles per hour (56.3 km/hr) in no time flat in pursuit of prey. 7. Stargazer Stargazer fish are extremely venomous and are some of the most toxic creatures in the world! The stargazer family of fish (Uranoscopidae) consists of around 51 species, who dwell in both deep and shallow saltwater habitats worldwide. They also have an invasive presence in U.S. and Canadian waters. 6. Lionfish Hailing from the scorpion fish family, lionfish are native to the Indo-Pacific region but are slowly taking over tropical waters around the world. They are known primarily for their bold, zebra-like pattern and venomous fin spines. 5. Puffers Speaking of venomous fish, Pufferfish, also called swellfish, blowfish, globefish, toadfish, and several other things, come from the Tetraodontidae family of around 90 fish species who are known for inflating themselves when disturbed. They are found primarily throughout the world’s temperate and warm waters in the sea and some brackish and freshwater environments. 4. Moray Eel Armed with strong jaws and sharp teeth, these smooth, scaleless creatures are not only capable of seizing and holding prey with ease, but of causing serious injury to humans, as well. The moray eel family consists of over 80 species, all which dwell in shallow tropical and subtropical waters. 3. Stonefish Even more venomous than the stargazer, the stonefish is a close relative to scorpion fish and also has dangerous dorsal fin spines. The stonefish (Synanceia) genus reportedly qualifies as the world’s most venomous fish. Found in rocky and muddy bottoms of the Indo-Pacific region, they are masters at camouflage, blending in seamlessly with surrounding rock and coral. 2. Goliath Tigerfish The goliath tigerfish (Hydrocynus goliath) is a large predatory freshwater species native to Africa, particularly the Congo River Basin and Lake Tanganyika. It has long teeth like a crocodile, perfect for ripping out large chunks of meat. 1. GREAT WHITE SHARK As one of the ocean’s most feared predators among humans, the great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) needs no introduction. Time and time again throughout history, great whites have been demonized in pop culture and the news. #dangerousfish #deadliestfish #biggestfish

What drives ordinary everyday people to become mass killers? What are the psychological mechanisms and cultural factors that lead to genocide? What were the causes of the Holocaust? Can we theorize a psychology of genocide? A theory of genocide? The Holocaust was not perpetrated solely by a few sadistic psychopaths but by tens of thousands of everyday Germans, Poles, Frenchmen, Austrians, Slovakians, in fact, much of Europe took part. If any of us could be motivated under the right conditions to become mass serial killers, how can we protect ourselves against the threat? How might we innoculate our societies and cutlures from decending into genocide? There are a number of factors that lead to the Holocaust. Compartmentalization, euphemism, conformity, authority, rationalization, propaganda, anti-Semitism, victimhood, and association, in particular. Gustav Le Bon, for example, argued that individuals are more likely to conform in a crowd because of anonymity and mimesis. Stanley Milgram’s famous experiments looked at conformity to authority. This combined with rationalisations like ‘its either us or them’ or ‘they won’t survive through the winter anyway.’ There was still a system of belief – an ideology – and almost a decade of propaganda disseminated by the Nazi Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda (RMVP). Years of anti-Semitism in Germany and Europe led to conspiracy theories about Jewish world domination. While Britain, the USSR, and America were all consistently associated with ‘Jewish aggressors’. When a person perceives themselves as a victim and a prisoner as an aggressor in a war of survival and we combine this with the pressure to conform and submit to authority the probability for murder increases. In Nazi Germany, everything was made to fit this formula. Ervin Staub proposes a model of genocide that has three initial stages: First, there’s the frustration of basic needs. Second, An out-group is identified that’s the cause. Next, The in-group is motivated by a ‘utopian vision’ that excludes a certain group. And Herbert Kelman has also argued that the requirements are threefold: authorization, routinization, and dehumanization. How does all of this fit together? Then & Now is FAN-FUNDED! Billions of birds migrate annually across the Western Hemisphere… but if we don’t know where they go when they leave their breeding grounds, how can we protect them? By extracting DNA from individual feathers (and borrowing cutting-edge technology from the Human Genome Project) scientists can map bird migration with greater precision than ever before. The result is the Bird Genoscape Project, and it’s revolutionizing bird conservation by connecting migratory birds – and the people who care about them – across the Americas. This work was funded by the National Geographic Society.
