Missing Stonehenge Chunk Turns out that a missing chunk of stonehenge that was taken as a souvenir, has helped to solve a long-standing mystery of where the stones originally came from. A workman named Robert Phillips, was part of a team that helped to re-erect Stone-henge in the 1950’s. One of the standing stones was fractured, so they drilled through it in 3 places to strengthen it with metal rods. 8. Mysterious Inca Remains While constructing an irrigation tank in central Ecuador in 2019, workers came across some mysterious artifacts. The workers got quite the shock when they discovered ancient human remains, and paused the long-awaited project while a team of archaeologists explored the site. 7. Nebra Sky Disk One of the most mysterious and controversial artifacts of all time is the Nebra Sky Disk. It’s a beautiful ancient object made of bronze and copper, said to represent the cosmos. It is actually believed to be THE oldest-ever depiction of the night sky but now archaeologists are getting into a hot debate as to how old it actually is. It’s such an extraordinary piece that it might be too good to be true. 6. Sarcophagi of Carajía Situated into a cliffside high above a river gorge sit seven large statues overlooking northern Peru’s Utcubamba Valley. These statues are actually large 15th-century funeral tombs created by the Chachapoya civilization before they were conquered by the Inca. Known to the locals as the “ancient wise men”, the Sarcophagi of Carajía sit nearly 700 feet (213.4 meters) above the valley floor. 5. Betz Mystery Sphere In 1974, a family s house caught fire in Fort George Island, Florida. The story goes that in the ashes they found a strange metal sphere with an apparent mind of its own in their backyard. It’s rumored to be smaller but heavier than a bowling ball, measuring eight inches (20.3 cm) in diameter and weighing 22 pounds (10 kg). 4. Illegal Slave Ship Three years ago, archaeologists working near Sisal, Mexico discovered the ruins of a sunken ship called La Unión, which ultimately proved to be an illegal slave vessel. It caught fire and went down in 1861 while carrying Maya captives to Cuba, not long after doing so was outlawed. 3. A Questionable Burial Since the early 1900s, the remains of several Neanderthals have turned up at a cave shelter in southwestern France at an archaeological site called La Ferrassie. The most recent discovery is a child nicknamed La Ferrassie 8, who was found between 1970 and 1973. 2. Dropa Stones According to legend, an archaeologist named Dr. Chi Pu Tei discovered 716 extraterrestrial stone disks inside a funerary cave in 1938 while leading an expedition in China’s Bayan Har Mountains. 1. Bizarre Ball While walking his dog in Hammonasset State Park last year, Connecticut resident Bob Kyrcz found an egg-shaped Native American tool known as a pecked stone sphere. Murderers, rapists, and drug dealers. The guilty and the innocent. All are behind bars together. In a jail designed for 600 prisoners, more than 2000 inmates are crammed into cells the size of shoe boxes. The prison is bursting at the seems, and there is no hope of improvement. For the inmates have not even been convicted. Thanks to President Duterte’s war on drugs, the Filipino justice system is totally overwhelmed. Instead of only putting those convicted behind bars, thousands of accused individuals are forced to await a verdict together in inhuman conditions: cramped space, tropical heat, insufficient water, and, worst of all, a jail that is ruled by the inmates. The guards can’t control the mass of prisoners. As a result, the jail is dominated by hierarchies and power relations. Ronniel Dumagit doesn’t yet know what awaits him. He’s a newbie. It’s his first time in jail. But faster than he’d like he’ll learn how the prison works, what the hierarchy looks like, and how he has to behave in order to survive. One prisoner decides what status and privileges each of the other inmates have inside the prison. They call him El Presidente: Glecerio de Pedro and his henchmen rule the prison. The guards are totally outnumbered. They use surprise inspections to try to increase their authority, but they can’t change the situation. The team investigate a possible fifth century cemetery in a ploughed field, where they find a metal shield boss. One male skeleton is holding a drinking vessel. There are hints of much earlier activity as well, including a Bronze Age barrow. Using authentic tools, they fashion a Saxon shield. Conservator Dana Goodburn-Brown examines the details in the x-rays of the shield boss; while Phil and members of Regia Anglorum demonstrate how the shields are used in battle. You’ve seen the rockets blast off into space, but, have you ever wondered the science behind the launch? On this StarTalk explainer, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice are exploring the rocket equation, space travel, and more. To start, we discuss why the application of mathematics adds to the theory of a simulation universe. Then, Neil tells us about the problem with space travel: fuel. You have to have enough fuel to get where you want to go, but, the fuel you have to carry to get to your destination adds weight, which means you need more fuel. And so on, and so on.
