First Identical Twins An Upper Paleolithic burial site in modern-day Austria contains the oldest-known remains of identical human twins! Dating back roughly 31,000 years, the Stone Age grave was discovered in 2005 at the Krems-Wachtberg archaeological site, which sits along the banks of the Danube River. It contains the skeletons of an infant who died shortly after childbirth and their sibling, who survived for around seven weeks before passing away. 9. Squatting Skeleton In May of last year, archaeologists were performing a routine excavation prior to wind turbine construction in the German state of Brandenburg. Here they were surprised to discover a strange squatting skeleton belonging to a woman who died over 4,000 years ago. 8. SKELETON LAKE Located at Roopkund Lake deep within the Himalayas, a site dubbed “Skeleton Lake” has perplexed experts since its discovery in 1942 by a British guide. Here at 16,499 feet (5,029 meters) above sea level, lie hundreds of human skeletons. 7. A Medieval Female Criminal In 2017, archaeologists working in southern Bulgaria discovered a late medieval grave containing a woman who was buried face-down with her hands tied behind her back. Found in a necropolis on the Nebet Tepe Hill in the modern-day city of Plovdiv, the odd burial could have belonged to a bandit or some other sort of criminal, whose strange position was likely a punishment for an alleged wrongdoing she committed while she was alive. 6. Baby Buried In Jar Late last year, archaeologists in Jaffa, Israel discovered the skeleton of a human baby inside a 3,800-year-old jar. Archaeologists from the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) unearthed the poorly-preserved remains from a shallow pit roughly 10 feet (3 meters) below sea level while performing routine excavations of a 4,000-year-old city ahead of a construction project. 5. Ur Skeleton During the summer of 2014, scientists at the Penn Museum in Philadelphia rediscovered a 6,500-year-old human skeleton that had sat in a coffin-like box in a storage room for 85 years. There was no documentation of its identity, leaving the skeleton’s origins and life story a mystery. 4. Bizarre Burials Swiss anthropologist Amelie Alterauge was perplexed when someone found a middle-aged man buried face-down at a 400-year-old cemetery in Bern. He was laid to rest with an iron knife and a purse full of coins dating back between 1630 and 1650 A.D. in the crook of his arm. 3. Six-Headed Chief In the 14th century, a warrior in his 40s died and was buried in Scotland’s Easter Ross region, in what is now the fishing village of Portmahomack. He was laid to rest in a ceremonial fashion, with an array of other human remains surrounding his head. 2. Casket on the Shore While walking along the shore at Bridge of Don near Aberdeen, Scotland in early 2019, a family spotted an eroding casket containing a woman’s skeletal remains. 1. STRANGE VIKING DUO In late 2019, archaeologists dug up two Viking corpses buried with their longboats -- one on top of the other -- in Vinjeøra, central Norway. The pair died nearly a year apart, with the first burial, a man, dating back to the 8th century, and the second burial, a woman, dating back to the 9th century. #mysteriousdiscoveries #skeletondiscoveries #recentdiscoveries #originsexplained

In this episode the shopkeepers move into the swinging sixties, and big changes hit the high street. Every shop has transformed completely - 1960s mass production of meat, bread and clothing means the bakers find themselves running a milk bar, the butcher sells hardware and the dressmaker is now running a hair salon. The grocers has become self-service, bringing a more modern shopping experience to customers. The bakers have to produce milkshakes and burgers, while the dressmaker turns her hand to bouffants and beehives. The butcher finds himself in direct competition with the grocer. As the shopkeepers struggle with the changes in their trades, the town sees first-hand why Britain turned its back on traditional shops and embraced the supermarket. At the end of the week, history dictates that, for some, it is time to leave, and customers realise just what they re losing. It s like Netflix for history... Mochi has been a staple Japanese food for thousands of years - and was once the superfood of the samurai! In this episode, Sohla El-Waylly makes mochi how the samurai of feudal Japan would have eaten it, along with a daifuku version from the 1700s. #AncientRecipes Samurai & Daifuku Mochi Recipe: For the Mochi: Mochigome rice Water For the Daifuku: 2 cups azuki beans 2 cups rock sugar Water Directions for the Mochi: 1. Soak the rice overnight 2. Put some water in the base of a wok. Line a bamboo steamer with cheese cloth. 3. Add the rice to the cloth lined steamer. Bring water to a simmer & steam for 30 minutes. 4. Add the rice to the usu or other mortar. Keeping all of the utensils moist, pound the rice & flip it over repeatedly. Keep pounding until the grains of rice disappear. You’ll likely need to alternate pounding & turning the mochi with moist hands near the end. 5. Sprinkle rice flour on a surface & your hands. Roll the mochi into a log. Divide it into individual portions. Roll into a ball. Slightly flatten to the desired shape Directions for the Daifuku: 1. Soak the beans overnight 2. Add the beans to a pot & cover with water. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. Simmer for 1-2 hours until the beans are tender. Watch to make sure it doesn’t go to a rapid boil so the beans don’t burst. 3. Crush up the rock sugar in a mortar & pestle. 4. Drain & rinse beans. 5. Put the beans back in the pot & add the rock sugar. Bring it to a low simmer to dissolve the rock sugar. Simmer for about 10 minutes after the sugar has dissolved until it thickens into a paste 6. Using a well-floured surface & your hands, flatten the mochi to make a sort of pocket. Place a spoonful of the anko paste in the middle of the mochi. Wrap the mochi around the anko & seal with your hands. Once sealed, slightly flatten with your hands.
