Why did Austria accept German Anschluss? From 1867 through 1918, the nation was locked in the Dual Monarchy of Austria-Hungary, until their defeat in World War One brought about a split. By this point, the Republic of German-Austria was born and lasted only a short time, before being replaced in September of 1919 by the First Austrian Republic. The new state survived just under two decades, with Austrian autonomy being challenged once more as the Germans marched onto Austrian soil on March 12, 1938. The annexation, known as Anschluss, seemed to yet again confirm that Austria was simply destined to never be a country of its own - but why? And why was it so easy for the Germans to annex Austria? ♦Consider supporting the Channel of Patreon : https://www.patreon.com/Knowledgia ♦Please consider to SUBSCRIBE : https://goo.gl/YJNqek ♦Music Used : Kevin MacLeod - Face Off Kevin MacLeod - Decision Kevin MacLeod - Grave Blowz` ♦Script & Research : Skylar Gordon ♦Sources : https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/germany-annexes-austria https://www.facinghistory.org/holocaust-and-human-behavior/chapter-7/taking-austria https://www.ushmm.org/learn/timeline-of-events/1933-1938/german-annexation-of-austria #History #Documentary

From enormous footprints left behind by the gods, to possibly another planet in our solar system here are 9 discoveries that scientists can’t explain! Ain Dara Temple Footprints Located northwest of Aleppo, Syria, Ain Dara is a small village and home to the magnificent Ain Dara Temple. In 1955 a huge basalt lion was found completely by accident and then later excavations revealed it was part of a large temple. One of the most famous features are enormous footprints in the ground, meant to represent the footsteps of the Gods. 8. Neptune’s Storm Reversal A year after spotting a dark storm on Neptune in 2018, NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope captured the vortex abruptly reversing. These storms typically vanish or fade after a few years, but this one behaved much differently, stopping in its tracks while traveling south and making a u-turn, moving back northward. 7. Life Beneath The Ice Earlier this year, scientists from the British Antarctic Survey announced the discovery of tiny, mysterious life forms a half-mile (0.8 km) beneath the ice of the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf on the southeastern Weddell Sea. 6. Yellow Penguin While snapping pictures on a remote island in the South Georgia islands in the southern Atlantic Ocean in 2019, Belgian photographer Yves Adams captured a photo of an extremely rare yellow king penguin. 5. GIANT FOOTPRINT OF PINGYAN In late 2016, photographs of a giant human-shaped footprint that a group of photographers supposedly discovered in the province of Guizhou in southwestern China circulated on social media. Numerous websites reportedly claimed that the footprint was real, despite its unrealistically gargantuan proportions, measuring 22.4 inches (57 cm) long, 7.9 inches (20 cm) wide, and 1.2 inches (3 cm) deep. The measurements might vary but it’s multiple times larger than the average human male’s foot, which measures about 10 inches (26 cm) long. 4. PLANET NINE In recent years, scientists began to wonder if there is possibly a ninth, unknown planet in our solar system. Yet they haven’t been able to find it. Believe it or not, experts’ understanding of the outer solar system is relatively new, having made most discoveries beyond Neptune after 1992. But they’ve found thousands of space objects since then, making it hard to understand why, if there is a ninth planet orbiting the sun much farther away than Neptune and Uranus, nobody has spotted it yet. 3. COVID-19 IN AFRICA As the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic grips the planet, having infected over 26 million people worldwide so far, scientists were surprised when the African continent was not the most heavily affected, as they expected. Out of nearly 631,000 total COVID-19 cases in South Africa as of last September, 15,000 people had died from the disease. 2. EVASIVE BLACK HOLE Scientists believe that a supermassive black hole sits at the center of every galaxy. A black hole in the Milky Way has the mass of four million suns, for example, and M87’s black hole measures 2.4 billion solar masses. 1. Neanderthal Speech One big question scientists have is how did people sound in the past? And how did we develop speech?? Scientists do not all agree on how our cousins, the Neanderthals, communicated with one another, or whether they were capable of verbal speech. #mysteriousdiscoveries #unexplaineddiscoveries #recentdiscoveries #originsexplained

It’s a simple innovation that helped win a war. The Bailey bridge was Donald Bailey’s innovative solution to a number of wartime obstacles. The allies needed a way to cross bodies of water quickly, but bombed-out bridges — or an absence of crossings entirely — made that incredibly difficult. That was only compounded by new, heavy tanks that needed incredibly strong support. Bailey’s innovation — a modular, moveable panel bridge — solved those problems and gave the allies a huge advantage. The 570-pound steel panel could be lifted by just six men, and the supplies could fit inside small service trucks. Using those manageable materials, soldiers could build crossings sufficient for heavy tanks and other vehicles. As impressive, the Bailey bridge could be rolled across a gap from one side to the other, making it possible to build covertly or with little access to the other side. Together, all the Bailey bridge’s advantages changed bridge construction and may have helped win the war. Further reading: John A. Thierry’s contemporaneous history of the Bailey Bridge provides a great overview: http://www.6thcorpscombatengineers.com/docs/engineers/the%20bailey%20bridge%20-%20john%20a%20thierry.pdf This Army Manual is a great look at how the Bailey Bridge worked: https://archive.org/details/DepartmentOfTheArmyTechnicalManualTM5277.PanelBridgeBaileyTypeM2.April1948/ A number of good papers about the Bailey Bridge are also available, though they sit behind a paywall. How did the universe get to be this way? On this episode of StarTalk, Neil DeGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice unveil some of the subjects covered in the new StarTalk book named after our recurring segment Cosmic Queries. Theoretical cosmologist and Director of Sciences at Pioneer Works, Janna Levin, helps us break down the building blocks of the universe and how it started. To start things off, you’ll learn what the galaxy is made of, both objects we can see and things we cannot. We take a deep, dark dive into dark matter. How much dark matter is there? Are neutrinos a form of dark matter? Has there always been the same amount of matter and dark matter? Could there be a universe with dark matter that is parallel to ours? Find out why someday dark energy will win over the universe. We discuss why theorizing something undetectable and even unprovable may still be a scientific question. To kick-off questions from our patrons, we explore the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). What has it enabled us to discover? What has it not discovered yet? Could the LHC make a black hole? You’ll learn about the discovery of the Higgs particle and other elusive objects. We dive into the scientific method physicists use in predicting theories and what physicists really want. We also explain string theory and the harmonics of subatomic particles, and how there “can’t be nothing.” Learn why nothing isn’t as empty as you imagine and how spacetime is malleable. Is everything in the universe just a point on a string? Discover all that and more, including how quantum mechanics create spacetime, on another exciting episode!
