What killed 9 hikers in 1959? ✉️ Sign up for our newsletter: http://www.vox.com/video-newsletter In February 1959 a group of hikers disappeared in the remote Ural Mountains of Western Siberia. A search party found their tent weeks later, abandoned along with all of their equipment. Frozen bodies were found 1,500 meters away, mysteriously underdressed for the weather conditions: most weren’t wearing shoes or gloves, and some were just in their sleeping clothes. Even stranger, three of the hikers had suffered major internal trauma — broken ribs and a fractured skull — and two were wearing clothes contaminated with radioactive substances. Nonetheless, the lead Soviet investigator closed the criminal case into the hikers’ deaths, concluding that an “overwhelming force” is what drove them from the tent. Theories ranging from rare weather events to conspiracy to UFOs have developed ever since, to explain what is now called the Dyatlov Pass incident. But two plausible theories, each involving an “overwhelming force” may finally explain what happened that night. It could have been a delayed slab avalanche. The hikers dug a platform into the slope of Kholat Syakhl to pitch the tent, and a scientific model published in January 2021 demonstrates that this, combined with strong downslope winds that accumulated snow above the tent, triggered a deadly slab avalanche. This type of avalanche can occur even in places not known for avalanches and can cause injuries consistent with the ones some of the hikers sustained. It also could have been a strong “katabatic wind,” a powerful wind that travels down a mountain slope, picking up speed under the force of gravity. In this scenario, a strong wind can become near-hurricane level very suddenly. If this happened the night of the incident, it could explain why the hikers would have abandoned their tent so quickly, as the powerful wind would potentially tear the tent apart. The mysterious internal injuries that some sustained are explained by a snow den the hikers dug for shelter collapsing on top of them. Both theories offer potential solutions for what drove the hikers to suddenly abandon their tent, and why some were so severely injured. Ultimately though, since there were no survivors, many of the questions surrounding the case will likely never be answered. Academic Matthew Alford explores fresh evidence in a Hollywood cold case. A university professor, Matthew Alford, suspects the CIA killed a Hollywood screenwriter Gary DeVore to protect a government secret. Alford believes it was an assassination, disguised as a car accident. So, he contacts a filmmaker to document the evidence he has accumulated. When Alford receives a phone call warning him to leave the case alone, he heads to Hollywood to conduct his own investigation. With unprecedented access to key witnesses and the family of the deceased, he builds a case for murder and thinks he has uncovered the real reason the Hollywood screenwriter found himself in deep water. Later, however, it becomes clear that there is a fundamental flaw in his case for a CIA assassination. He finds compelling which supports the idea that the man might not be dead at all and his death was faked. Alford returns to the UK torn between the two hypotheses. His last hope is an informant who has agreed to help find proof despite his concerns that it’s dangerous. The hamburger as we think of it today originated in the US around the turn of the century - but a dish of meat between slices of bread has been a part of many cultures throughout history. In this episode, Sohla recreates Rou Jia Mo, one of the first versions of a hamburger from Ancient China in 200 BCE. #AncientRecipes Recipe for Rou Jia Mo: What you need for the meat filling: 1kg Pork belly 60g rock sugar ¼ cup Liaojiu or sherry Fermented soybean paste - equivalent to 5tbsp of soy sauce 10g ginger 20 Sichuan peppercorns 3 pieces star anise ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon Handful of shanzha berries 3 small cut pieces of liquorice root ½ tbsp salt Instructions: 1. Over medium heat, add about a tablespoon of oil and melt 60g of sugar into the oil until dark brown - about 5 minutes. Be careful not to burn the sugar. 2. Add water to the sugar & oil mixture. 3. Add in the pork & all of the other filling ingredients except the salt. Add enough water to cover the pork. 4. Cover & let braise for 3 hours. 5. Add salt & let simmer for another 20 minutes. What you need for the mo: 500g All-purpose flour 5g Yeast 25g Oil 220g Water ¼ tsp Salt Instructions: 6. Combine the flour, water, oil & yeast. 7. Knead by hand until dough is consistent throughout. 8. Cover with a warm, damp rag & let rise for 40 minutes. 9. Preheat oven to 475 degrees. Add a cast iron pan to the oven as it’s heating up. The cast iron pan should get piping hot. 10. Deflate the dough. Split the dough into 10 balls. Roll the balls into a play-doh snake shape. Roll the snakes flat with a rolling pin. 11. Smear a bit of oil down the middle of the dough. Then fold it in half hot-dog style. Roll it up almost like a cinnamon bun. Squish the slightly with your palm to flatten it. Roll the edges of the dough with a rolling pin until it forms a shallow bowl. 12. Take the pan out of the oven & put it on the stove on high for 1 minute. 13. Turn the heat to medium & add the dough to the pan. Toast on one side for 30 seconds. Flip & toast on the other side for another 30 seconds. 14. Add the pan & dough back into the oven for 2 minutes to bake. Many millionaires live in the Democratic Republic of Congo, one of the world s poorest countries. This film depicts some of those who have made fortunes amid the chaos, including musicians, mining bosses, entrepreneurs and preachers. The DRC is rich in raw materials, but only a few profit from its natural resources. While 60% of Congo s inhabitants live on less than $1.25 per day, businessmen, artists, former rebel leaders and evangelists are reaping the rewards of economic growth. In the capital, Kinshasa, these new rich live in safe and luxurious enclaves, while children toil in coltan mines in the eastern part of the country. Fally Ipupa has made his money with music. Others rely on their business acumen, like Patricia Nzolantima, who founded a taxi company and aims to give more opportunities to women. With 3,000 mine workers, Cooperamma is the largest employer in North Kivu, in the east of the DRC. Managing director Robert Seninga says his coltan mines are extremely well-run, yet safety standards are poor. Coltan, a globally coveted mineral, is used in cell phones and other devices. It’s both a blessing and a curse for the Congo. It makes some rich, but for others it means death. The region still suffers from ethnic and factional conflicts, with money from illegal coltan smuggling financing new violence. It’s a vicious cycle. [April 22, 2021: The former president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Joseph Kabila, in a letter to DW dated 16 April 2021, has rejected as false an estimate in the (aforementioned) documentary that he had amassed a fortune estimated at some 13 billion euros during his tenure in office.
