In Victorian England the Workhouse formed the basis of society. The poor and destitute entered Workhouses to receive free health care and food. But in a society that viewed poverty as a crime, these workhouses were never meant to comfort. It was a means to punish the destitute and encourage future independence. In this two-part documentary, several UK celebrities explore how their ancestors survived the difficult environment of the Workhouse and discover some unexpected family secrets which shock and inspire them in turn. Sixta works as a house cleaner. Before the pandemic hit, she had four clients; now she has just one. To pay her room rental of $600 a month, she collects bottles every day. Alcohol claimed the life of Sixta s youngest son during the pandemic. Sixta is an undocumented immigrant from Mexico who has lived in New York for 34 years. Long ago she and her husband parted ways, leaving Sixta to raise five children on her own here. She collects bottles to get by, though recently she’s earned even less than usual, because she went on a hunger strike for two weeks. Together with other activists, Sixta is calling on the US government to help needy, undocumented immigrants like herself. Aid organization Feeding America estimates that some 50 million people in the US suffer from food insecurity due to the pandemic. In his report, Bastian Hartig documents the growing gap between the rich and the poor in New York. https://www.feedingamerica.org/hunger-in-america/food-insecurity ـــــ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. How Los Angeles destroyed a community and built a ballpark on top of it. Subscribe and turn on notifications (🔔) so you don t miss any videos: http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Before Dodger Stadium, LA had Palo Verde, La Loma, and Bishop — three neighborhoods that made up a thriving, predominantly Mexican American community in an area known as Chavez Ravine. But in the late 1940s, the city marked that area as “blighted,” setting the stage for a decade-long battle by residents to preserve the community against threats of eviction. Ultimately, the city forced out residents with little to no compensation, clearing the way for the future baseball stadium. The result is a complicated legacy, a story that s often missing from the history of Los Angeles, and for some, hard questions about what it means to be a fan of the LA Dodgers. Through interviews with several former residents of the area, this episode of Missing Chapter explores the story of the neighborhoods cleared to make way for the future chosen by the city. At countless stops along the old highways, travelers could find all manner of attractions like the “World’s Largest Ball of Paint,” “Cadillac Ranch,” and “The Thing,” giving birth to an entire culture of kitsch, monuments to the mammoth, and shrines to the strange. Why was the German Army so Effective and strong in World War 2? ♦Consider to Support the Channel of Patreon and gain cool stuff: https://www.patreon.com/Knowledgia After the end of the Great War… and after an unsatisfactory peace, huge inflation, and an unprecedented economic crisis, Germany was on its knees… Even being a country with huge economic potential, due to the factories and companies that still existed there, Germany was, however, only a shadow of the former monarchy. But ... from 1933 to 1941 Germany achieved what it had not realized in the previous war. It had a new army that was considered unstoppable, acting with precision, speed, and communication, taking by surprise the great European powers! Thus, at the end of 1941, almost all of Europe was controlled by Germany and its allies. German soldiers could see the buildings of Moscow from a distance ... Almost all predictions led to a total German victory. But How did this all happen? Was it just the efficiency of the German Army? Or was it a multitude of reasons, including sound planning or even luck? ♦Please consider to SUBSCRIBE: https://goo.gl/YJNqek ♦Music by Epidemic Sound ♦Script by Skylar J. Home: Surrounded by settlements, the Palestinians of Sheikh Jarrah like Muna al-Kurd are targeted by demolitions and evictions. For some in East Jerusalem, building a future has become an act of resistance. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures Muna al-Kurd has been forced to share half of her house with Israeli settlers since 2009. Her dream is to become a journalist to expose the injustice: I wake up three hours before my class starts just to arrive on time. Because there is chaos and checkpoints on the roads. I decided to study media because I love to work with cameras. That s how my voice and the voice of my people can reach the world. Beside evictions and demolitions, a big problem for residents of Sheikh Jarrah is the constant denial of planning permissions by the government. Hanni Issawi, director of a local committee, says: We have no empty places or room to build new buildings for a new generation, so it is very difficult to keep living a normal life. We are surrounded from all sides. We are like an island in this area. For some like Omar Abdelqader, however, the occupation has become too much. He plans to move to Jaffa to seek a better life: Sometimes we take too much pride in being able to withstand pain and suffering. Maybe in that sense I feel like it s a little bit like running away from Jerusalem, but I m a human being. It seems that building a future in East Jerusalem has become an act of resistance. The Liaoning Province of China has a reputation as a place where dinosaur fossils turn up on a regular basis in a remarkably preserved state. Many people think evolution happens in a very linear way.
