Maafushi Central Prison is a high-security prison covering an area the size of ten football pitches. Surrounded by six-meter-high walls, and the sea, the facility houses up to 800 criminals under the strictest security measures. All-round sureillance by a myriad of cameras, strict rules and daily searches are the key components in the success of this prison in the middle of a vacation paradise. The prison comprises a total of nine different units: The largest of these โ Unit 9 - a star-shaped building, houses prisoners with higher security level. Units 5 through 8, which surround it, are for inmates with lower security level โ and those soon to be released. The womenโs wing is located at the other side of the prison.A workshop area is also available, where inmates with good behavior may be allowed to work. Also for the guards, there are strict rules. As for Senior guard Hassan Mohammed, who โ as many of his colleagues โ also live on the island of Maafushi, just one wall away from the prisoners. The guards donโt carry weapons, only handcuffs โ a deescalation measure. Billed as a successor to the beloved Hubble Space Telescope, the Webbโs mirror is six times larger and its instruments are tuned to observe longer wavelengths, in order to detect the stretched-out light from primitive galaxies 13.5 billion light years away. That primary mission โ to see the first stars and galaxies that formed after the Big Bang โ determined the unusual and challenging design of the telescope. Instead of a shiny tube, the Webb Telescope looks like a giant honeycomb riding on a silver surfboard. The short answer to why it looks like that is: It needs to be very big and very cold. In the video above, NASA astrophysicist Amber Straughn and Vox s Joss Fong build a small model of the telescope to explore its extraordinary design.
