Britain is in the throes of a serious economic crisis and many Scots are wondering if things wouldn’t be better if their country was independent. Although it lost a referendum on independence back in 2014, the Scottish government still wants out. Many Scottish voters support Scotland’s nationalist First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, including musician Neil Mackay. A long time supporter of independence, Mackay organizes large-scale demonstrations, where thousands of people protest in favor of leaving the UK. Rising energy and food prices are hitting people hard, the length and breadth of the country . One of them is single mother Sandra MacPherson. Like many others, she has been on a very tight budget this winter. Advocates of Scottish independence blame Westminster for their plight, whereas opponents blame the Scottish government. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and her party, the SNP, have long made it clear they favor a fresh referendum; but in November 2022, the UK Supreme Court ruled that a new referendum may only take place with British government approval. In this extraordinary two part series we look at the stories of two women whose pursuit of love led them to relationships with some of the most violent criminals in America. Sandie’s story Sandie is 47 and a twice divorced mother of 2 from Somerset in England. Her wedding captured on video, shows her in a perfect white gown with veil and a beautiful bouquet, but there is something missing – the groom, Charles Chucky Mamou. Chucky is on Death Row for a double murder during a drug deal, a crime for which he insists he is innocent. Texas Death Row is strictly non-contact so Sandie had to get married with a stand-in – it was her new father-in-law who presented her with the ring and stood by her side in front of the pastor. After just 4 months Sandie discovered Chucky had been writing sex letters to a married woman in the UK – so ended the relationship. Sandie has had up to 30 prison pen-pals, and fell in love again with 28 year old Reginald Blanton, he proposed and she said yes. Reginald is also on Death Row, found guilty of shooting his friend in the head. He too says he is innocent. Despite their 19 year age gap, they both profess this is true love, but their relationship is confined to annual visits and hundreds of letters. Our Sea Turtle is too cold! Help us save it https://neaq.org/brave We found a Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle, the rarest and most endangered on earth, beached and freezing cold in Cape Cod. Without immediate help this turtle has very little chance of survival. Join the rescue effort as we follow its journey to be rehabilitated and hopefully released to swim in the ocean again. Will our sea turtle survive? … watch to find out! Rare and critically endangered sea turtles are freezing cold and washing up on the shores of New England each fall because of changing weather patterns. Luckily, we have joined forces with the conversation efforts to save these “cold-stunned” turtles which is led by the New England Aquarium and Mass Audubon. Each year hundreds of volunteers comb the sandy beaches of Massachusetts in search of these distressed turtles so they can be rehabilitated and released back into the wild. Big thanks to the staff and volunteers at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and the clinical team and volunteers at the New England Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Hospital.
