Fort Proctor is a mysterious and abandoned fort located deep in the heart of Louisiana. Built in 1863, it was a strategic military installation during the Civil War, designed to protect the Mississippi River and the surrounding region from Confederate attacks. But today, the fort lies in ruins, overgrown with vines and surrounded by a thick, impenetrable swamp. As you approach the fort, the first thing you ll notice is the eerie silence that surrounds it. The only sounds are the chirping of crickets and the distant calls of birds. The fort s walls are made of brick and are at least 10 feet high, with a large gate that leads into the main courtyard. The walls are covered in graffiti, and it s clear that the fort has been abandoned for a long time. Once inside, you ll find yourself standing in the main courtyard, a large open space that would have once been used for drilling and training. But now, it s just a barren wasteland, with the only signs of life being the weeds and the moss that have taken over. As you explore the fort, you ll come across several buildings that have been left to rot. The barracks, which would have housed the soldiers, are now just crumbling ruins, with holes in the roof and walls. The hospital, which would have been used to treat the sick and injured soldiers, is now a ghostly shell, with empty rooms and peeling wallpaper. One of the most striking features of the fort is the underground tunnels that run beneath it. These tunnels were used as a means of escape in case of an attack, but now they re dark, damp, and eerie. You ll need a flashlight to navigate them and hear the sound of dripping water and the scurrying of small animals. As you wander through the fort, you ll begin to feel the weight of history pressing down on you. You ll imagine the soldiers who once lived and fought here, and the hardships they must have endured. You ll also think about the fort s role in the Civil War, and how it played a part in shaping the history of the United States. Overall, Fort Proctor is a place that is both eerie and fascinating. It s a testament to a time long gone, and a reminder of the sacrifices that were made for our freedom. If you re ever in Louisiana, it s definitely worth a visit. Just to let you know, once you enter, you may never want to leave. #Geography #LifeExpectancy Life expectancy is the number of years a person can expect to live, this varies from country to country, from male to female. Due to a number of reasons, such as hormones resulting in cardiovascular health conditions, men on average live shorter lives than women. Men on average across the planet live for an expected 70.6 years, compared to females who are expected to live 75.1 years. Again, depending on the country, the amount of years that women live longer than men by varies country to country due to many different factors. Japanese men can expect to live 81.6 years, the second highest in the world, whereas Japanese women can expect to live 87.7 years, a gap of just over 6 years There isn’t a single country on earth where men are expected to live longer than women, the country which comes closest to this is Bhutan, whose male to female life expectancy gap is 0.85 years. 🔥Subscribe! Superfood fruits - good for us, but bad for the environment? Growing avocados and blueberries requires a lot of water; and because they’re usually transported to Germany from other continents, that also leaves a large carbon footprint. Avocados and blueberries are marketed as superfoods in Europe. Nutrient-rich fruits bursting with health benefits. But in Chile, avocado farming is already causing massive water shortages; blueberry farms in Peru are currently undergoing huge expansion. The journalist Matthias Ebert went to Peru and Chile to research the environmental and human cost of the superfood industry. Smallholders in the Chilean province of Petorca have been growing avocados for many years. But a sharp increase in demand for the fruit in Europe and the US in the 1990s triggered a production surge. Since then, the avocado market has been dominated by big landowners - and is consuming huge volumes of water. One kilo, or three avocados, requires 1,000 liters of water, many times more than what’s needed to grow tomatoes or oranges. Water activist Rodrigo Mundaca has been on the frontline of this battle for years and is now one of the region’s most important politicians. He’s made it his mission to reform Chile’s water legislation. Just like avocados in Chile, Peruvian blueberries have also experienced a boom in recent years. The sweet fruits are grown in black plastic sacks on the arid desert soil and exported to Germany, primarily in the months of November and December. Peru hasn’t yet been hit by water shortages, but producers plan to expand cultivation on a massive scale, requiring larger and larger amounts of water, which they’d very much like to divert from the Andes to the desert-like blueberry farms. Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice discuss exoplanets, extraterrestrials, and answer extraordinary questions from our fans with astrobiologist, David Grinspoon. Can we entertain the idea of non-carbon-based life? We explore why carbon works so well for the basis of life and whether silicon-based life seems possible. What chemistry is different between the two elements? Learn about agnostic biosignatures and what the basic definition of life is. Is chemistry the same everywhere? Why do we assume that any life we find will be more advanced than us? What would we do if we discovered life less technologically advanced than us? We discuss the SETI protocol and the likelihood that we would be able to communicate with aliens once we found them. Why are there supermassive black holes at the center of galaxies? How did they get there? Could there be life on a planet without a magnetic field? How many Earth-like planets do we know about that reside in habitable orbits? Samuel Willenberg was the last survivor of the Treblinka death camp in Nazi-occupied Poland, out of only 67 people who were known to have survived the camp, and where an estimated 900,000 Jews were murdered in a 13-month period during World War II. Still haunted by the horrors he witnessed there, Samuel retells his story with extraordinary intensity and has immortalised his harrowing experiences in a series of bronze sculptures. The film focuses on one man s personal odyssey to reflect on the enormity of the genocide inflicted upon Poland s 3.5 million Jews. Samuel Willenberg s story is one of survival against staggering odds and though heart-wrenching and horrifying, it is ultimately one of triumph. 📺 It s like Netflix for history... Rather than producing a single bloom of soft iron in my furnaces, as was done in most of history, I tend to produce cast iron prills from the ore. Cast iron is iron that has a very high carbon content. Its good properties are that it s very hard and has a low melting point. The drawback is that it s relatively brittle compared to regular iron. So I set about trying to find a method for reducing its carbon content. In this video I smelted local ore (iron bacteria) and obtained cast iron prills. I then tried melting it in a small crucible to obtain a solid ingot to begin the experiment. This gave a poor result though with an incomplete melt. Next I tried rusting the prills first with the intent of creating iron oxide (rust ) in the iron so that the next melt would combine the materials in an exothermic reaction that would burn the carbon out. In the past, rusty iron was added to cast iron to decarburize it (wet puddling/pig boiling). But this also gave poor results. Finally, I did away with the mold and simply melted the iron prills by dropping them into the forge in front of the hot air blast of the forge. The reasoning was that the high oxygen would burn out the carbon from the metal. This caused them to melt together to form an ingot. After a few attempts I took one of the ingots and hammered it while still white to yellow hot and hammered it with a stone. The ingot was able to be flattened as it had become malleable. This was the result I wanted. This method of decarburization (melting cast iron in a open hearth to make it malleable) was used throughout history at different times. In ancient China it was known as "stir fried steel/ 炒钢" and in the west known as the "Osmond process". I also read that in India, cast iron ingots from the crucible were brought to a temperature just below melting point before becoming forgeable. In future experiments I hope to use this technique to decarburize iron ingots to make into forged metal tools as opposed to the cast knife I made in a previous video. These are the strict rules: If you want a fire, use a fire stick - An axe, pick up a stone and shape it - A hut, build one from trees, mud, rocks etc. The challenge is seeing how far you can go without utilizing modern technology. I do not live in the wild, but enjoy building shelter, tools, and more, only utilizing natural materials.
