#thecosmosnews This year s first solar eclipse will occur on April 20 from 7:04 am till 12:29 pm IST - called as the ‘Ningaloo solar eclipse’ or ‘hybrid solar eclipse, people can view it through live telecasts from other countries. After this, only one more solar eclipse will occur this year on October 14. What is a Hybrid Solar Eclipse? A hybrid Solar Eclipse occurs when there is a combination of an annular eclipse and a total solar eclipse and is caused when the moon s shadow moves across Earth - making a transition to another. During this rare eclipse, the Sun forms a ring-like shape - known as the ‘ring of fire’ - for a few seconds. Where will it be visible - Date and Time The eclipse will be visible from Australia, East and South Asia, the Pacific Ocean, Antarctica, and the Indian Ocean, however, not in India. During the ‘annual ring of fire’ - it will be visible for a few seconds in the Indian and Pacific oceans. Meanwhile, the total eclipse will only be visible in three locations on land including Exmouth, Western Australia, Timor Leste, and West Papua, according to space.com. Ways to look at Solar Eclipse safely - According to NASA, it can be dangerous to look directly at the Sun during the eclipse, and hence, recommends using specialized eye protection for solar viewing. Eye filters including black polymer, aluminized Mylar, or welding glass of shade number 14 can be used to see the eclipse. However, viewing any part of the Sun through a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope without a solar filter secured at the front of the device will instantly cause severe eye injury.

Between the continents of North and South America is a tropical paradise: The Caribbean. This is an archipelago of over 7,000 islands and reefs, lying within the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea. From just a few metres wide, to hundreds of kilometers across, every island is different, and each has its own unique wildlife. This film reveals the Caribbean’s secret wild side. Under the cover of darkness, giant leatherback turtles visit Trinidad’s beaches to lay their eggs. Dominica’s volcanic heritage gives it fertile soils, making the island rich in flowering plants. These provide food for some of the Caribbean’s fastest movers: hummingbirds. The Caribbean’s coral reefs are one of its richest treasures. Many of the species that find shelter here are found nowhere else. These warm, calm waters provide sanctuary for ocean giants too. Humpback whales travel thousands of miles to raise their young in the Caribbean Sea. As summer approaches, these sun-drenched islands become an altogether darker place. The Caribbean is in the firing line of some of the most ferocious storms on earth. Hurricanes bring waves up to 20 metres high, sometimes destroying the reefs themselves. A troop of lobsters undergoes a night-time march to safety. Trinidad, connected to South America until just 12,000 years ago, has its own unique legacy of mainland life. Flocks of luminous scarlet ibis probe the mud for crabs. White-throated capuchin monkeys make the most of island life, searching for conches at low tide. In its tropical forests, manakin birds dance in a bid to attract a mate. In July, the young leatherbacks leave the safety of their nests. Once grown, the females will return to the Caribbean’s beaches to lay their eggs, just as their ancestors have done for the last 100 million years.

This event, while not unique in the least, is a striking example of how corporate negligence causes environmental an humanitarian disasters. In the weeks since the crash, several other trains have derailed, including at least one more of Norfolk Southern s. Why is this such a common problem? Lying 40km off the east coast of Tanzania in Africa, the Zanzibar Archipelago has been labeled as the most exotic island chain in the world. Pristine sands and azure blue sea make it a much loved holiday destination, but bizarre creatures, many of enormous size also roam the islands. The world’s largest crab scales trees in search of coconuts, and clouds of giant bats fill the skies at dusk. For centuries, the lure of ivory, spices and gold has attracted empire builders from across the globe, and for over 2000 years people have led simple lives governed by the tides. While women collect octopus on the shores, men risk their lives fishing with whale sharks, the largest fish in the world. Zanzibar is not only an untamed wilderness - it is also a land of giants.

The transition to green energy is crucial for the future health of the planet. But it requires vast amounts of copper. The growth in electric cars and renewable technologies in particular demand high volumes of the metal - which is often mined in South America, at a huge cost to the environment. One of the most important raw materials for key technologies in the energy transition is copper. For years now, the metal’s price has been rising steadily, and has now reached unprecedented levels. Copper mines and copper production is a billion-dollar business. But what’s the impact on the climate? Hamburg-based Aurubis is Europe’s largest copper producer. The company made more than 530 million Euros in pre-tax earnings in 2022. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, this was the best result in the company’s history. A global workforce of some 7,000 produce more than 1.2 million tons of copper. Aurubis derives the copper concentrates for its smelting furnaces from a range of countries. Chile is one of the biggest suppliers. Aurubis says it maintains high standards in the supply chains and points to a code of conduct that all cooperating companies must follow. Nevertheless, the mining process impacts negatively on local areas and communities. The world’s largest open pit copper mine lies in the far north of the province of Chuquicamata. It’s located in the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth. The mine consumes vast volumes of water in an already arid location. People living in surrounding villages are now struggling with water shortages and water contaminated with heavy metals. One horrifying outcome is a cancer rate that’s up to six times higher than elsewhere in the country. As the price of copper continues to go through the roof, there are those that say Germany should reopen its copper mines. It’s thought there could be 130 million tons of the metal in the Lusatia region. But can copper be mined in a way that’s kind to the environment? The answer to this question may be found in Canada. In the 1970s, the area surrounding the copper mines of Ontario was seen as the most polluted region in North America. But, following huge investment involving the introduction of modern technologies, Canada has succeeded in healing the landscape, planting new forests and getting pollutants out of the water supply. Copper is still mined here - these days in the greenest way possible. So, if clean copper mining is now an option, why is the Canadian example the exception to the rule? #documentary #dwdocumentary ______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Using a combination of rough cut pine, walnut and birch and tongue and groove cedar, I build a bookcase wall to separate the living room from the bathroom and an end table to support a lamp, books, card games... With cold February temperatures testing the comfort of the off grid log cabin, the wood stove proves to be up to the task of heating the space and the mass of the logs retains it well, with morning temperatures in the cabin remaining quite warm. Six days deep into the heart of the Sahara, into one of the most picturesque parts of the desert: Tassili n Ajjer National Park of Algeria, near the borders with Libya and Niger. I never thought I could be so overwhelmed by the beauty of the Sahara but for sure this was one of the most amazing trips I have ever had. I witnessed breathtaking Saharan landscapes changing endlessly before my eyes, and I hope that you too, watching the video, will get mesmerized by the amazing beauty of the desert - the tall dunes, the dramatic sandstone formations (pinnacles, buttes, arches), and the ancient rock art. More than 15,000 petroglyphs and paintings, some up to 8,000 years old, have been discovered in the area. The Tuareg people who have lived in the Sahara for millennia are nowadays happy to guide travelers through its secrets. Tassili n Ajjer is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that deserves to be seen and admired.
