With a north-south expansion of more than 7500 kilometres, the chain of the Andes is the biggest mountain range in the world. Peaks of up to 7000 metres in height, do not only offer an imposing view, but also influence the climate highly by being the drainage and meteorological divide all the same. The land in the spheres of the Andes is full of contrasts, a land of fire and ice, of coldness and heat. In the wet and stormy patagonian South, jagged massifs and glaciers prevail, while volcanos, hot springs, geysers and salt lakes dominate the scenery on the dry highland. On the western side of the range, air enriched with moisture provides for lush, lichen-covered enchanted forests, while the eastern side only receives 10 % of the precipitation which supports only semi-arid areas. Starting in Tierra del Fuego in the very South of the American continent, we travel along the Andes towards the North and climb to heights of more than 5000 metres on the bolivian/peruvian Altiplano. Onward, we follow the course of the water downhill to the east and arrive in the Pantanal, the biggest wetland in the world. The waterfalls of the Rio Iguazu, which is a tributary to the huge Rio Parana, which again drains in the Atlantic Ocean at Buenos Aires, represent the awesome grand finale. Extraordinary nature and animal stories – sometimes imposing and fascinating, sometimes funny or exciting – describe in a very touching way creation and fading and life and death in the spheres of the Andes.

When English Colonists first set foot on a peninsula of the James River 416 years ago, there were an estimated 15,000 native Americans living in the region, and the colonists’ relationship with those natives would drive much of the subsequent history. The stories of their fates are an integral part of American history, even many years before anyone had heard of the “United States.” The story of the small tribe called the Wiccocomico deserves to be remembered. Every year the flamingos along the Mediterranean shores set off in search of a suitable breeding place. This beautiful and delicate bird has fascinated civilizations for centuries and thus the myth of the phoenix was born. “The bird of the sun”, as it was referred to in ancient Egypt, has existed for ten million years and is still here. Today, our phoenixes are found in the south of Spain, in the Atlantic marches of Doñana. They spend the winter in this mild and welcoming habitat with its rich feeding grounds. However, when spring comes, the sun lets them know that it is time to start looking for suitable places to build their nests. In this documentary we follow the flamingos on their flight in search of a suitable breeding place, which they finally find in the lagoon of Fuente de Piedra. With its salty water over thick, black mud, Western Europe’s largest lagoon is just the right sanctuary for their annual reproduction cycle. Few places like this still remain because they are vulnerable ecosystems. We accompany the bird colony while they raise their offspring. Many dangers threaten this exhausting challenge but in the end the young birds leave behind their grey childhood plumage and learn to fly. The long nomadic flight of the Phoenix begins again.

He is by far the coolest fish on the block: armed with eighteen venomous spines, he hunts, invisible to its prey, in packs… He is a true multi-talented enigma - the Red Lionfish. He as grand ambitions, too, spreading to new and unprepared waters: the Atlantic Ocean. The film sheds light on uniquely fascinating behavior and stunning abilities that let the lionfish conquer foreign waters, and by doing so threaten entire ecosystems. With stunning visual, high-speed footage, amazing biofluorescence shots and behavior that has never been filmed before, the film tells a suspenseful wildlife story, which spans over three continents and two oceans. But this film is not only a portrait of an amazing fish, it also has an important scientific and environmental story to tell: a story about humans who unintentionally alter the community of life in the ocean and how people and nature do their best to get rid of a highly successful invader.
