In southern Bangladesh, silt islands along the Jamuna River regularly appear and disappear. These ‘chars‘ are populated, despite the fact that they are completely flooded during the monsoon season. Part of the great river Brahmaputra, the Jamuna river sees the emergence and disappearance of these ‘chars’ every year. The people who live here are known as the Chauras, and they have organized their lives around rise and fall of the waters. They go about their agricultural work and live in small communities, always knowing that everything they have built up can be destroyed with the coming of the monsoon season. The film also documents the dry season, when the river Jamuna recedes, leaving long white sand beds and new islands of fertile soil. Chaura Rahim Shorkar has plenty to do now and hopes to harvest the crops in time for the next flood. Rahim does not want to trade his life here for one on the mainland. His wife Alea, however, takes a more critical view. What future do they have here? What future awaits their six-year-old son Ashik? At any moment, they could face the same fate as their neighbor Shuruz Saman, who has been hit for the sixth time in his life. All his fields and land have been swallowed up by the water and once again, making a new start costs him his entire savings. All the Chauras know this suffering. They all help each other, lending a hand when the corrugated iron walls of their houses need to be moved again because of the waters. Life here is not easy and will not get easier. After trying to trap this massive beaver which has been chopping down all our trees, I was finally successful. I got the massive beaver, and decided to turn it into a delicious caveman snack by cooking it in coals on an open fire at the log cabin in the woods! I place 3 traps in water, 2 with castor scent and 1 in a damn break. I also put out 3 browning trail cameras to track all the activity in and around the traps to learn how animals react. It has no odor, and isn t very gamey when prepared with care to remove the scent glands. The castor gland is also saved and can be sold. It is often used as a natural scent in food products used world-wide. Beaver castor lure is made from beavers from another area. This incites a territorial response, and the beaver will come looking for the foreign invader. I set up a trap in a likely swim path between the beaver lodge or beaver house to intercept the curious beaver. The 330 beaver trap is very much like a large mouse trap. When the animal trips the mechanism, it releases the power behind two very large springs which force the linked bars shut compressing the animal ideally in the chest and neck. This ensures and immediate and ethical harvest. I use the beaver for both fur and food. The meat is very good, on par with other wild game meats such as venison from deer. Beaver was very commonly consumed for meats by fur harvesters and trappers historically as the meat is quite good. The tail was considered a delicacy due to it s high fat content which is rare in wild animals. The fur of the beaver will be skinned open, and then pinned to a board to dry after it is scrapped clean of fat and any meat. After it is dried, it will be sent to the fur auction or sold privately. Beaver fur is quite soft, and is used in various applications including hats. Trapping beaver is a large part of the history of Canada, and the fur trade runs deep. Today, trapping beavers is necessary to reduce habitat destruction. Beavers can kill a lot of trees and even flood out roads. As with all wild things, they must be managed carefully to maintain a good balance. What would be the consequences of industrial exploitation of the ocean floor? A deep-sea expedition in the Pacific explores this question. Raw materials have been mined on land for thousands of years, often with negative consequences for nature and people. Deep down in the ocean, valuable raw materials are stored en masse: manganese, nickel, cobalt, copper. Many of these materials are currently in great demand. Technically, it is possible to harvest manganese nodules, for example, in the deep sea. But should we do it? Even among the researchers aboard the "Island Pride," opinions differ. Sea levels are rising due to climate change. Many coastal cities are at growing risk of flooding. Architects are trying to react to this development with new ideas, such as floating cities. But this concept is not without its problems. Architect Koen Olthuis is constructing a floating city in the Maldives, sustainably cooled with sea water. In the Netherlands, Sacha and Jan live in a waterborne section of the Steigereiland neighborhood. It s based on a complicated feat of engineering - but also depends on cooperation and solidarity. If one home is too heavy, it raises the one next door. Yet Sacha and Jan like its collaborative nature. The residents of the floating neighborhood all love living by the water, not far from the heart of Amsterdam. In Germany, a University of Kiel project goes even further. Biologist Martina Mühl is researching the possibility of implementing aquaculture very close to home, so residents can tap their own fresh local supply of fish and seafood.
