Despite this, the transgender community still face untold levels of discrimination and persecution. This is in spite of "Hijras" holding a historical precedent in Hindu culture. “Clients sometimes threaten to shoot me if I don’t go through with it,” says Alisha, while others report of gang harassment and police coercion. “Then it starts: oh homo, gay, you know, all those names which are used to completely take away my dignity and to take away my whole human existence,” says Laxmi. An ex-tank commander who experienced the horrors or real tank warfare first hand, Fred saw combat in the Korean War and was the first serious tank collector in the United States. His people have responded with violent protests, which could plunge the troubled nation back into chaos. "It s just like raping a woman. They re going to rape our resources." The landowners living along the length of the proposed pipeline have been promised huge benefits from the plan to extract gas from the Southern Highlands and export it to Asia. But they don t believe it and are up in arms: in scenes of chaos fuelled by a legacy of watching promised riches pass them by, they cut down power-lines, wielding guns and blocking roads: "You never listen - I ll chop you people". Ironically, most of the people living in the resource-rich Southern Highlands live without power, without hospitals and without education. I was always taught there were seven continents, Australia being one of them. However, I ve been doing this long enough to know many of my international viewers might ve been taught something else; that Australia is an island within the continent of Oceania. This has in turn generated a lot of confusion surround Australia and its status as a landmass. Of course as we all know, these terms are meaningless, which is why lately we ve been using biogeographic realms instead. I hope by using these alternative units for dividing the earth, we might finally get to an answer as to whether Australia is an island!
