A cheese making business in the Alps is the project of Ethiopian entrepreneur, Agitu Ideo Gudeta. Forced to flee Ethiopia, she has built a new life in Italy. A political activist forced to flee Ethiopia has built a new life for herself in northern Italy, where she’s founded a successful business producing and selling goat’s cheese. The move has helped increase numbers among an increasingly rare breed of the animals, which are allowed to graze on abandoned communal pastures. Agitu Ideo Gudeta had to leave her homeland eight years ago after getting involved in protests against land grabs by international corporations. Arriving in Europe, the trained sociologist had to start again from scratch - and set out to found a business in the alpine Trento region. At the ‘La Capra Felice’ or ‘The Happy Goat’, she only uses milk from Pezzata Mochena goats, a local indigenous breed whose numbers have declined dramatically in the last few years. Starting with a herd of just 15 goats, Gudeta now has 180, and her firm has attracted media attention at both the national and international levels. Young people from all over the region are flocking to her dairy farm to learn how to make her popular cheese. The term "halal” doesn’t just refer to foods that conform to Muslim law. The word stands for an entire philosophy, and halal products and services are playing an increasingly important role in the economy. Halal means "permitted” and refers to actions and things that are in accordance with Islam. The opposite of halal is haram, meaning "forbidden.” The concept of halal influences Muslims’ entire lifestyle, including diet, clothing, work, leisure, and even love lives. Different schools of Islamic law mean there are also different interpretations of halal and haram. Nearly two billion of the world’s population are Muslim, one of the fastest growing social groups. That amounts to a lot of potential in the marketplace - something that is already being widely exploited in countries like France and England. Halal products are becoming increasingly important in Germany, too. The flip side of this growth is what the Chamber of Commerce and Industry calls a "Wild West” situation, as competitors vie for market share in a fiercely competitive halal certification market. On the other side are people who believe that nature can create life’s countess varieties with no outside help at all. The name for it, one of the most hotly debated words in our language, evolution. The theory of evolution was born out of a remarkable journey. In 1831 a naturalist and explorer, Charles Darwin, embarked on a five-year voyage around the world, along the way he collected fossils, plants, and animals. Back in his home near London, he spent the next 22 years piecing together a theory for how the great variety of life came to exist. Darwin didn’t claim to know how life started, but he did day that it was old. He thought it had existed for hundreds of millions of years, but many of his opponents argue that life is young, and that God created all living things within the last 10,000 years. So who is right, when did life begin?
