We use double sleeping bags to camp out in the winter as well as a camp mat and cot. The tent fluctuates from very warm to very cold as it is not insulated. #axe #tree #woods Felling a huge, dying sugar maple tree on the path to the off grid log cabin, I use an axe to cut it down and a Granberg Alaskan chainsaw mill and Husqvarna chainsaw to mill lumber out of the tree. This huge maple tree hangs over the pathway and I have been walking under daily since buying the land in April 2017 and I have planned on cutting it down before it falls on it s own. It s almost completely rotten on the south side, which is the direction it leans, and the tree is being completely supported by a thin layer of live wood on the north side of the trunk. The tree is over 20" in diameter but because it is barely alive, I am able to cut it down with just a few swings with my Swedish felling axe. Once the tree hits the ground, I use an axe to limb the tree and my new Husqvarna chainsaw to cut it into 36" logs. I use a new Granberg Alaskan chainsaw mill to cut slabs off the live side of the log. Since most of the wood is dead and decomposing, I have to scoop out the rotten wood to use just the thin strip of live wood to make furniture. The first thing I m making is a small corner desk for the log cabin, something I can sit at to edit videos, carve wood, sharpen tools, etc in front of the small window facing south over the front porch of the tiny house. Self reliance is becoming better defined for me as I continue to build the off grid wilderness homestead. I am discovering my limitations this year, one of which is the near impossibility to fabricate my own lumber using handsaws. I just don t have the strength and stamina to make lumber from timber on the property in the quantity that I m using. I didn t mind splitting some logs and cutting short lengths of wood into small, usable boards from the timber or to rip short boards using hand tools into dimensions suitable for small projects, like the floor boards, but I have reached my limit. The Gransberg Alaskan chainsaw mill will be used along with my Husqvarna chainsaw to cut all lumber from now on, and I ll continue to use hand tools to process the lumber into furniture, building materials for the outdoor kitchen, sauna, workshop, woodshed and more. Instead of using handtools for everything as I have in the past and since I m continuing to work alone as a one man construction crew, I will use power tools where necessary to do the bigger jobs safely and quicker, but I ll make sure I continue to develop my skill with hand tools so that I can work and live without electricity and fossil fuels most of the time and when I run out of money or resources to use outside fuel sources. Once the wilderness homestead main infrastructure is built (mainly the buildings) I can slow my pace back down and I won t need power. That will always be my goal. China claims they aren t military bases, but their actions say otherwise. Join the Vox Video Lab: http://bit.ly/video-lab Since 2014, China has been building islands in the middle of the South China Sea. What were once underwater reefs are now sandy islands complete with airfields, roads, buildings, and missile systems. In less than two years, China has turned seven reefs into seven military bases in the South China Sea, one of the most contentious bodies of water in the world. The sea is one of the most important areas of ocean in the world. It’s estimated to hold 11 billion barrels of oil, 109 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, and 10 percent of the world’s fisheries. Most importantly, 30 percent of the world’s shipping trade flows through the South China Sea to the busy ports of Southeast Asia. It’s an incredibly important strategic area, and five countries currently claim some part of it. Most countries base their claims off the United Nations Law of the Seas, which says a country’s territory extends 200 miles off its shores, an area called the exclusive economic zone, or EEZ. Any trade or resources that fall in a country’s EEZ belong to that country; they’re its sovereign territory. Any area that is not in an EEZ is considered international waters and subject to UN maritime law, meaning it’s shared by everyone. Every country in the region, which includes Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei, and Vietnam, bases its claim to the South China Sea on the UN’s EEZ laws — except China. China argues it has a historical claim to the South China Sea, dating back to naval expeditions in the 15th century. After World War II, the Japanese Empire lost control of the South China Sea, and China took advantage of the moment to reclaim it. On maps, it started drawing a dashed line that encompassed most of the South China Sea. This line became its official claim and is known today as the Nine-Dash Line, because it always has nine dashes. In 1973, when the UN law established EEZs, China reaffirmed its Nine-Dash Line, refusing to clarify the line’s boundaries and rejecting other countries’ claims. Since then, tensions have built around who rightfully owns the South China Sea. The dispute has centered on the Spratly Islands, an archipelago at the heart of the South China Sea. Currently, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam claim some part of the Spratly Island chain. They’ve asserted their claims by putting small buildings, ports, and even some people on what are essentially rocks in the middle of the ocean. But the Spratlys are very important, because whichever country can successfully claim them can extend its EEZ to include them, thus gaining miles of precious sovereign territory. This is why China began building up islands in 2014. By turning these rocks into military bases, the Chinese are now able to support hundreds of ships, bolstering their presence in the region. They are using fishing boats, surveillance ships, and navy destroyers to set up blockades around other countries’ islands and defend their own. This is all done very cautiously and in small steps in order to avoid sparking a wider conflict. Since China began building islands, the disputes have not become violent. But tensions are building in the region. As China deploys more of its military to the Spratlys, other countries are getting nervous and building up their own islands. The majority of those diseases are zoonoses, or diseases that originated in animals, like Ebola, West Nile virus, and probably Covid-19. But what makes zoonotic outbreaks likelier than ever is actually something humans are doing. According to science journalist Sonia Shah, author of the 2017 book "Pandemic," the expansion of humans onto more and more of the planet’s land has increased the likelihood of disease outbreaks in two ways. First, as humans move into what were once animal habitats, we end up living closer to animals that might contain dangerous pathogens; and second, as we destroy or alter animal habitats, we’re driving away or killing off animals that once served as a “firewall” between those pathogens and us. And the human land development driving this trend shows no signs of stopping. Correction: At 4:28 and 4:49 we mistakenly depict the European robin. I captured this portrait of my grandfather, Jan van Driel, in 2014 with my brother when he was still in good health. He passed away in summer 2021. The wind mill is on display at the Kinderdijk Museum in the Netherlands. The steam engines are owned by various family members. He will always be an inspiration of creativity and craftsmanship.

Wacker Drive is a major multilevel street in Chicago, Illinois, running along the south side of the main branch and the east side of the south branch of the Chicago River in the Loop.[2] The vast majority of the street is double-decked; the upper level is intended for local traffic, and the lower level for through traffic and trucks serving buildings on the road (and originally a dock). It is sometimes cited as a precursor to the modern freeway, though when it was built the idea was that pleasure vehicles would use the upper level. It is the only street in the city that is prefixed with all four cardinal directions, albeit on different parts of its route.[a] The drive is named for early 20th century Chicago businessman and city planner Charles H. Wacker. The upper level is normally known as Upper Wacker Drive, and the lower level is Lower Wacker Drive. Shop now at https://bit.ly/TheHistoryGuyMOVAGlobes On September 3, 1859 the Memphis Tennessee Daily Appeal noted a most startling event. “On Thursday night last, about 12 o clock, the heavens were suddenly lit up as with a half dozen moons.” The glow was so remarkable that people assumed it must be coming from a massive fire, and the paper reported that city fire bells were rung. But, the paper writes “When the truth revealed itself, it appeared that old nature had only lit up its own chandelier.” The lights were the aurora borealis, although you can hardly fault people from the American South for not recognizing the northern lights. And while the people of Memphis might have been overawed at the “Nature’s chandelier,” the article gives no indication that they truly knew how extraordinary the event was, nor its connection to the glowing ball of gas called the sun.
