Michel de Montaigne, author of the Essays, On Cannibals, and the Apology for Raymond Sebond, is one of the most important thinkers of the early modern period, the Renaissance, and the enlightenment birth of modernity. I look at his thought, particularly the scepticism he inherited from Prryhonism – Prryho of Ellis and Sextus Empiricus – and how it can be used rhetorically in defense of populists. I adopt Jan Werner-Muller’s definition of populism, especially his anti-pluralism, to argue that Montaigne would have been sceptical of people’s faith in powerful figures and a defender of pluralism that protects against the misuse of power. Sohla cooks up a classic biryani recipe from the 1500s that is a big part of her ancestral heritage! This spice-filled dish was brought over by the Mongols to the Indian subcontinent. Learn more in this episode of Ancient Recipes. THE RECIPE For the marinade: - 1 cup whole milk yogurt - ½ cup lightly packed chopped mint leaves - ½ cup lightly packed chopped cilantro, leaves and tender stems - ¼ cup garlic-ginger paste - 4 teaspoons garam masala - 2 teaspoons toasted & ground cumin - ¾ teaspoon ground turmeric - 2 tablespoons kosher salt - 3 pounds bone-in goat meat, cut into 2-inch pieces (shoulder or leg) 1. In a large bowl, whisk together yogurt, mint, cilantro, garlic/ginger paste, garam masala, cumin, turmeric, and salt until well combined. 2. Add goat and toss to evenly coat in marinade. 3. Cover and chill at least 4 and up to 12 hours. For the rice: - 4 cups aged basmati rice (preferably sella basmati) - 4 quarts water - 4 bay leaves - 1 cup kosher salt 1. Place rice in a medium bowl. Cover with cool tap water, use your hand to gently agitate the grains, and drain. 2. Repeat at least 2 more times until water runs clear enough to see your hand through it. 3. Cover with cool tap water and set aside to soak for 15 to 30 minutes. 4. In a large stock pot, bring the water, bay leaves, and salt to a rapid boil. 5. Drain the soaked rice. 6. Add drained rice all at once to boiling salted water. Initially the water will stop boiling and the rice will sink to the bottom. Stir a few times with a wooden spoon to prevent sticking, then stop stirring. 6. After a couple of minutes, the water will return to a simmer and a few grains will begin appearing near the surface. The rice is ready to drain when the grains have nearly doubled in size, the water returns to a boil, and most of the rice rapidly bubbles to the surface. 8. When you bite into a grain, you want to see a hard white core; just like pasta cooked al dente, the grains should remain firm. Depending on the quality of your rice, this can take anywhere from 3–7 minutes, so begin tasting the grains early. Drain rice and rinse with water until cool. For the assembly: - ½ teaspoon saffron threads - pinch kosher salt - ¾ cup ghee - 1 large yellow onion, peeled and thinly sliced - 2 bay leaves - 2 3-inch cinnamon sticks - 6 whole cloves - 2 teaspoons caraway seeds - ¾ cup lightly packed chopped mint leaves, divided - ¾ cup lightly packed chopped cilantro, leaves and tender stems, divided - Chapati dough (to seal) - ½ teaspoon mastic - 1 piece coal - 1 teaspoon ghee 1. In a small mortar and pestle, grind the saffron with a pinch of salt until fine. Add 2 tablespoons hot water and set aside to steep. 2. Cook onion and ghee in a biryani pot over coals, stirring constantly, until onions are lightly golden. 3. Turn off heat. Using a slotted spoon, transfer onions to a plate. Scoop out half the ghee and reserve. 4. Return pot to coals. Add bay leaves, cinnamon, cloves, and caraway and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add goat meat and all of the marinade and cook, stirring frequently, until the mixture bubbles and begins to brown, about 5 to 7 minutes. Take off coals. 5. Spread goat mixture into one even layer. Sprinkle over half the chopped mint and cilantro. Top with par-cooked rice, spreading it into one even layer. 6. Sprinkle over remaining chopped mint and cilantro, reserved fried onions, drizzle over remaining ghee and steeped saffron. Drizzle over ½ cup of hot water. 7. Poke 5 to 7 holes into with rice with the back of a wooden spoon. 8. Tuck a small aluminum dish into the rice. Light a coal over the flame of a burner and place in the dish. Add 1 teaspoon of ghee and immediately cover the pot and seal with chapati dough. 9. Place the biryani over coals for about 2-2 ½ hours. Let rest at room temperature for at least 15 minutes and up to 1 hour before opening. 10. Before serving, grind the mastic in a small mortar and pestle and dissolve with 1 tablespoon hot water. Fearing the outbreak of another bloody conflict, Britain and France entered into a policy of appeasement with Nazi Germany, engaging in a four-power conference that would culminate in the signing of the Munich Agreement. Ultimately, Hitler would betray the trust of the western powers, and the Munich Agreement is now remembered in history as a byword for the futility of appeasing aggressive, totalitarian states. 成为此频道的会员即可获享以下福利： https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfkFEfvGzuMT4hK0suu_Q2g/join 在世界范围内，都流传着救世主的传说，中国有紫薇圣人，佛家有弥勒佛，基督教有弥赛亚，几千年来，世界各地不知道有多少人，自称是救世主。可是最后谎言都被戳穿。但是这个世界上有且仅有一个人，被亿万人认可的， 说他是这个世界上唯一，真正存在过的救世主。他就是耶稣。他从新改写了上帝与人类的约定，他的出现，让现在地球上三分之一的人都变成了基督徒！ 今天我们就来聊聊耶稣的故事！耶稣真的存在过吗？还是说他只是像神话故事一样，被虚构出来的呢？另外耶稣到底给我们普通人，带来了什么样的天启呢？虽然我们都听过耶稣的名字，但是我相信很多人并不知道，在圣经的描述中，他到底经历了什么了不起的故事，为什么会让这么多人相信，他才是那个唯一来过人间的救世主！ 所以在 回答耶稣是不是真实存在过这个问题之前，今天还是让我们先聊聊，圣经中耶稣那传奇的的经历吧。 早年 耶稣出生在犹地亚王国的拿撒勒城，也就是现在的以色列北部地区。耶稣的出生就有着非同寻常的神迹。一位处女玛利亚，虽然已经许配给了一位木匠约瑟。但他们还没有结婚，也没有同房。就在这个时候，天使加百利，突然显现在玛利亚的身前，并且对玛利亚说，你马上就会被上帝的圣灵感孕，待孩子出生以后，你要为她取名为耶稣，当然”耶稣”这不是随便一个人可以取的名字，他在希伯来语的字面意思就是”耶和华是救世主”，他将把我们人类从罪恶中拯救出来。 而圣母玛利亚的未婚夫约瑟，虽然只是一个木匠。但是他可是以色列第二位国王大卫王的后代。得知自己的未婚妻，还没有同房就怀孕了。所以约瑟立刻就想把他休了，然而就在这个时候，神迹又一次显现，天使又出现在了约瑟的面前，并告诉他，玛利亚怀的是上帝的儿子，并预言说，耶稣将来还有另外一个名字叫做”以马内利”，意思是上帝与我们同在。让人没想到的是，在天使的显现之后，约瑟居然立刻就回心转意了。 而当玛利亚怀孕后，就遇到了当时的人口普查，所有的居民都必须要回到自己的故乡，于是约瑟带着玛利亚前往自己的故乡伯利恒。当他们来到伯利恒，碰巧旅馆客满，于是玛利亚在马厩里产下了，基督教中最重要的人物-耶稣，接着天使将耶稣出生的消息传遍了全世界。而这里特别有趣的是，圣经中记载，此时有三位神秘的东方圣贤，他们精通天文学和占星术，通过天象看到救世主降生，于是这三位东方圣贤，马上带着礼物来看望耶稣。而这三位东方圣贤，一直以来都是圣经中的一个未解之谜。没有人知道他们到底是谁，但是可以肯定他们绝对不是当地的犹太人，因为在犹太教中，是严厉禁止人使用魔法和占星术的！于是可以肯定这三位东方圣贤，肯定是外邦人，有人猜测，可能是古代波斯的这三位圣贤，巴尔大撒、墨尔基和加斯帕。甚至还有人认为，有没有可能这个东方，可能更远，比如说，我们中国。而在那个时代，中国确实有一位，博览群书，精通天文星象的圣贤，叫做刘向。当然这仅仅只是猜测而已。我们就不跑题了，让我们继续回到耶稣的故事当中。 其实东方三贤的到来，并没有为耶稣带来好运，反而给犹太人带来了一场噩梦。当时的国王希律王，一听到从东方来的占星术士说，伯利恒城中有一个犹太人的王降生了，他和耶路撒冷全城的人就立刻就感到了不安，希律王暗下决心，一定要除掉这个威胁他王位的婴儿。好在这时候希律王不知道，耶稣就是这个婴儿。同时天使也警告了占星术士，不要透露耶稣的身份，于是东方三贤悄悄的离开了犹地亚王国。但是这一下希律王就更加的不安了，于是他一气之下，居然把伯利恒城四周围两岁以下的婴而，全都杀光。然而就算这样也没有消除希律王的不安，到最后，他不仅因此杀了自己的王后，甚至还有他的儿子。 而耶稣一家人，则听从了天使的警告，逃亡到了埃及，一直到希律王死后，才回到拿撒勒居住！不过到这里，又一个圣经的千年未解之谜出现了。耶稣从出生，到他30岁左右正式开始传教。中间这三十年，就像是人间蒸发了一样，这样一位举世瞩目的人，在这三十年当中，几乎没有任何记载，没有任何人知道这三十年中，他到底经历了什么！ 然而刚才说的这些天使，东方圣贤，这些神迹，还算不上什么。最让人惊讶的是，早在耶稣出生几百年之前，犹太人的先知以赛亚，就在以赛亚书中说，将来，会有童女怀孕生子，给他起名叫以马内利。另外一位犹太人先知弥迦，在弥迦书中也预言，基督要降生在犹大地的伯利恒。先知欧瑟亚（Hosea）则预言说：“上帝将从埃及召回他的儿子来”。另外先知耶利米甚至还预言到，弥赛亚的降临会导致，有许多的婴而被杀，而这些事在耶稣降生前后，全都一一的应验了。而且这还只是其实很少一部分的预言。有学者就特别找出，在耶稣出生几百年前就完全写完的旧约圣经中，起码包含了300多项，准确预言耶稣出生的预言。 传道 根据圣经记载耶稣30岁时，开始在故乡加利利一带开展传道工作，他对人们说他是神的儿子，是以色列的王，他用生动的比喻，为人们传播天堂的景色，同时也告诉人们有关末日审判的预言，当然他也教人行善，谦卑。然而奇怪的是，突然冒出来这样一个年轻的传道者，立刻却有很多人开始追随他，耶稣还在这些信徒当中，亲自挑选了12位门徒。所以这里立刻就出现了一个问题，为什么呢？这样一位年轻人突然冒出来，为什么有这么多人相信他呢？其实答案很简单，在圣经的记载当中，耶稣在传道的过程中，施行了很多的神迹。大家亲眼看到了神迹，不得不信。不过，圣经中记载耶稣的神迹实在太多，这里我们就简单举几个例子！ 有一天耶稣和他的门徒，还有他的母亲，一起被邀请参加婚宴，可是宴席到一半，耶稣的母亲却发现，酒喝完了。按照当地的习俗，出现这种情况会使负责婚宴的新郎极为尴尬。耶稣的母亲就想，天使不是说耶稣是上帝之子吗。或许他能行一个神迹，补充一些酒。但是没想到，耶稣很严厉的告诉祂的母亲，这样向祂提出要求是不适当的。因为作为神的儿子，他首先必须按照天父的旨意，而不是母亲的指示来行事。所以这里从经文来看，耶稣可不是永远都是那么和蔼可亲，很多情况下，他其实是非常严厉。他非常讲究原则。不过尽管如此，耶稣并没有就此对母亲的要求不理不睬。他叫人把6口石缸都注满了清水水。然后，耶稣的第一个神迹就这样发生了，片刻间，当佣人把水再从缸里舀出来时，发现水竟然变成了酒。而且全都是最上好的酒。这就是耶稣行的第一个神迹，在此之后耶稣的荣耀大增，门徒对他信心倍增。 另外。有一个大臣的儿子，生了重病。大臣听说过耶稣用水变成酒的故事。于是立刻赶来请求耶稣，救救他儿子。圣经中记载耶稣是这么说的：”你们不看见神迹奇事，总不相信。罢了，回去吧，你的儿子已经好了。” 大臣回去之后发现，他儿子早在昨天就已经痊愈了。然后这样治疗病人的情况还有很多很多次，这里就不再举例了。 最厉害的是，在圣经中还明确记载，他直接复活了三个人。比如有一次，耶稣和门徒一大群人，前往了一个叫做拿因城的地方，在城门口的时候，只见有人抬着一个死人出来，这是一位独生子，他的母亲刚刚失去他的丈夫，现在又失去了他的独生子，耶稣非常怜悯她，于是他对着那个死去的年轻人说，”我吩咐你起来！”然后这位死者居然就立刻复活了。所以在场的人，又恐惧，又惊讶，同时又极度的崇拜，人们都在说，原来传说中的先知，真的在我们身边呀。 然而照说来这样一位有神力，有怜悯之心的先知，出现在大家的身边，应该立刻受到所有犹太人的爱戴啊。不过可惜的是，在耶稣传教的过程中，他与原始的犹太宗教产生了很大的冲突，比如，在原始犹太宗教中，安息日是神定下来的休息日。在旧约圣经，创世纪中记载。上帝创造我们这个世界花了6天时间，然后在第七天神都休息了。所以在耶稣出现之前，犹太人不管是医生，祭司，在安息日都会休息。但是耶稣就不一样，哪怕是安息日，耶稣也照样用他的神力为人们治疗；另外当时的犹太社会，特别鄙视的罪人，同时犹太人被罗马殖民，他们鄙视替罗马收税的税吏、外邦人、犯奸淫的妇女，但是耶稣不一样，他不分身份。只要是上帝的子民，他都予以安慰鼓励，并向他们传有关天堂，有关神的福音； 同时耶稣不仅和他们做的不一样，他愿意不分时间，不分身份帮助所有人。而且耶稣还经常公开的批评，原来的犹太宗教，特别是批评那些的祭司阶级，说他们就是假借上帝的名义，说他们做着一些形式主义，和假冒的伪善。所以可想而知，原始犹太教的领袖对耶稣有多恨之入骨，甚至他们还开始计划要杀了耶稣。于是，在逾越节前夕他们用三十两银子收买了，耶稣十二门徒之一的犹大。
