The Shameful Camp As the gateway to Europe, the Greek island of Samos has become a hellish limbo for thousands of migrants waiting for a response to their asylum applications. Conditions are poor, and the wait can take years. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures On Samos, 3,500 refugees await a response to their asylum application, some for years. I was a student at Damascus University. Now - nothing. Just eating and sleeping, the same as an animal , says one Kurdish refugee who fled Syria, and has been in the camp for fifteen months. The official part of the camp was designed for 660 people, so residents must cram into tents. In the main camp, for the most vulnerable refugees, people from different families must allegedly even share beds. If you don t want to stay there then they tell you go - go to the jungle , says one 25 year old woman. I didn t imagine that I would spend two years ... in such conditions. I thought the EU would take care of me , says one man who has been waiting sixteen months to hear back about his asylum application. A linguistic stereotype, explained. This video is presented by Brilliant: https://brilliant.org/Vox/ Thank you the Video Lab members (Janet, Martian, and Mariko) who helped me with this video. It’s so well-known that American soldiers in World War II reportedly used codewords like “lallapalooza” to distinguish Japanese spies from Chinese allies. But American movies and TV shows have applied this linguistic stereotype to Korean and Chinese characters too, like Kim Jong Il in Team America: World Police, or Chinese restaurant employees singing “fa ra ra ra ra” in A Christmas Story. However, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese are completely different languages that each handle L-sound and R-sounds differently. In this episode of Vox Observatory, we take a look at each language and how it affects pronunciation for English-language learners. People are made of cells, cells are made of molecules, molecules are made of atoms, atoms are made of electrons, protons, and neutrons. And protons are each made of three up or down quarks. Simple stuff, right? All except for that last part. Protons are actually made of many, many quarks that happen to look like three only when we look at them in a particular way. And even then, sometimes they’re made of 5 quarks - including the charm quark. What is the most dangerous sport in the world? Which sport should you avoid? If you play sports regularly, it’s more than likely that at some point you’ll get injured. Basketball players get jammed fingers, sprained ankles, and black eyes. Soccer players’ knees often grind down after many years of play, while high-impact sports such as football and rugby will leave most players feeling bruised after almost every game. Cricket and baseball players might not suffer so many injuries, but spectators who are not huge fans may die of boredom watching a full game. Obviously, when we talk about dangerous sports, many of those sports aren’t available to everyone. Kids in England lay down their coats as goal posts and start playing, but that is not the case everywhere else. Most of us can’t just get on a very fast motorbike and start racing, nor do we regularly don some boxing gloves and start pulverizing our friends. I chink the log cabin with clay and moss, build a front porch and talk about self reliance and survival for kids and young adults as Generation Z takes the torch from us. With 4 days of warm weather before winter, snow and cold weather returns, I must make the log cabin weather tight, and I put a wood deck on the front of the cabin before the ground freezes so that I can build a full covered porch over the winter. With temperatures above zero, I was able to chink the outside of the cabin to keep mice and other rodents out. Cleaning up around the cabin was also high priority before snow covers the ground. In my self reflections, I talk about hard work, perseverance and why I m inspired by the next generation. I thank kids and young adults for following along and I name several of them specifically, thanking them. The film starts off with drone footage of the cabin, transitioning from summer to fall to winter. A close encounter with two beavers preparing food for the winter adds to the scene. On the final day of the video, extremely high winds rule the day, knocking over trees, making whitecaps on the lake and adding anxiety to a hard day of work. In Episode 5 of our 6-day long survival challenge, we begin, like most of our days, bowhunting deer from a treestand. We process some more black walnuts, check our live traps, and do a few sets of raccoon and crow to try to get even more food on our survival challenge. The end is capped off with another deer hunt over freshly cut soybean field. We grind up our raccoon meat and fry it up combined with wild rice for a hearty meal. My Gear (Shop and Support): https://www.fowlersmakeryandmischief.com/the-wooded-beardsman FULL SEASON 6 PLAYLIST: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDg2Qmw9pKieoXCXUQL3K5bNyNvI3oyeo In this 6-day long survival challenge, we test our limits, skill, and ability to maintain our body weight and thrive only eating wild foods that we scavenge, forage, collect, trap, hunt and fish, in and around the cabin. Jeremy (One Wildcrafter): https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCy7HUXYD7Ua6zPR384d1ETg In Episode 1 of our 6-day long survival challenge, we settle into cabin life in the woods. First we wake up to a squirrel hunt, which was supposed to be an archery deer hunt, just without deer. We spot a turkey, but it won t come into our mouth calls. We give the raccoon call a try without much success either. Afterwards, we take a walk on our 40 acres to check our baited live traps set for raccoon. We are using a combination of haveahart-style traps and an Advanced Trap which can catch all kinds of big animals up to the size of a coyote. We collect wild or feral apples and also show you how to prepare black walnuts for eating as a wild edible. We finish the day off with wild apple cobbler made fresh with maple syrup and leached acorns. This entire season is about homesteading, but we are also looking at collecting as many wild foods as possible in order to send Jeremy home with some surplus foods for his "big wild year." We will pursue all kinds of wild animals including beaver, raccoon, skunk, whitetail deer, squirrel, possum, crow, grouse, duck, goose, pigeon, porcupine, bullfrog, fish, bear, apples, black walnuts, wild grapes, burdock roots and whatever else makes the mistake of crossing our path. We will use a variety of tools including live traps, bows, crossbows, shotgun, and fishing rod. Our ultimate goal of this survival challenge is to not only survive, but thrive. We aim not to lose any body weight, but instead look at this challenge as a long term situation where calories in need to match calories out, sustainability. Season 6 of our Wilderness Living Challenge will take place out of our homestead, off grid cabin complete with solar power, and battery bank system in order to help us make more use of the foods and resources we are able to collect.
