We will show you our journey of the building constructing a small rustic live-edge off grid cedar sided log cabin built by a group of friends by hand. This is how we built a small cabin in the woods on a small budget. We will show you how we hand dug our post holes to hold the cabin up, right up to installation of the custom built front door, all using a portable saw mill. You can see the whole built including full commentary here: https://youtu.be/jipME-yoUO0 This cabin build is something my brother and I really wanted to do ever since we were kids, playing around in the forest, coupled with whatever materials we had from the local infill to build all sorts of forts. Now we build a full habitable cabin First we start by digging in reclaimed pressure treated posts by hand using a shovel. Next we cut and harvest dead-standing cedar and pine trees for the structure including the 2x4 s, ridge beams, and sidding. We must use battery powered hand tools because there is now power at this location in the forest. We use reclaimed windows from a house demolition and install a used fireplace. The roof is supplied by Vic West and goes up quickly with screws that have rubber gaskets. The door is custom build using cedar. The deck is held up by pine logs (dead standing) and covered with cedar. Season 2 will cover more of the build including the interior and outbuildings for things like off grid power. So we really need to close in all the gaps. We ll use handtools like hammers, axes, saw, shovels and prybars, but will also use power tools including chainsaws, winches, atv s, and a chopped up SUV whenever it is convenient. We will be using cedar and spruce trees that are standing dead so we don t have to kiln dry the wood or let it season. Please follow along with the full playlist in order to understand the full construction of the tiny cabin. In this series we use materials around us to construct a small forest cabin. We ll use cedar, pine, ash, maple, and whatever else we can scrounge up from the 30 acres around us. The aim is to avoid using as much store bought material as possible and keep the budget reasonably low. Originally we set a budget of $1000, but that included the use of a frame from an old camper trailer. As we build, the budget will remain flexible in effort to produce a cabin that we are proud of and one that will last a long while, be comfortable, and sleep real human beings. To build a log cabin in the woods - is it an escape from society and toxic people? This week, I finish the roof structure on the off-grid home, install the east window, trim the log ends and cook two hearty meals on the open campfire in front of the tiny house. After witnessing a spectacular sunrise on Georgian Bay, I talk about toxic people and toxic debt, how they impact my life and how I deal with it. The surrounding forest is alive with birds and animals preparing for winter in this Canadian wilderness, including the black bear, a regular visit to the log cabin. A light dusting of snow reminds me how close winter is now and that I need to finish the roof and install the wood-stove, a challenge when I m working alone. Next video includes installing the waterproofing on the roof of the cabin, installing the woodstove inside the tiny house, and chinking the log walls. This part of Ontario Canada usually sees winter early, and it s just a matter of weeks now before the land is buried in snow. I need to build a woodshed and an outhouse before then, in addition to chinking and weatherproofing the cabin. Can I do it in time? I m not sure, so I have to prioritize. In this Bushcraft Camp Update episode, we focus on improving the thermal convection of the super shelter. The large lean to shelter needed improving due to the fact that the size of it meant that the thermal properties were not very good. So I adapted a technique used by Canadian Wilderness Survival & Bushcraft instructor Mors Kochanski, which is a simple modification of his famous supershelter. You don t need many tools to build this part of the super shelter. Using just a clear plastic sheet, a log and a few nails, we created a screen down the front of the shelter which traps heat from the fire, similar to the greenhouse effect. This heat then radiates around the shelter to keep you warm in the winter months. It s a great upgrade to the bushcraft camp and I am looking forward to seeing how it performs during the colder months. In the original super shelter, Mors uses a mylar reflective blanket to radiate the heat around the shelter. Perhaps I might add this in the future to the wilderness shelter. The camp is really coming along now that I have spent more time here. With the addition of the new adjustable wood roof, it has made it much easier to control lighting conditions and keep the rain out of the bush camp. The hunting tower and ladder are still holding up well, although I wish I burnt the ends of the logs going into the ground similar to the ancient Shou Sugi Ban method to help preserve them for longer. The secondary lean-to shelter with moss roof is getting a little run down and needs some work. I would also like to move the log store away from the camp. I m still not happy with the fire pit but this can be changed quickly enough.
