Come join us for a Ukraine apartment tour in Kiev as we showcase our airbnb rental property that we stayed at for just over a week. Overall, our apartment in Kiev was spacious and the location was fantastic just off of Pushkinska Street nearby Taras Shevchenko Park (Парк ім. Тараса Шевченка). AirBNB Discount Code: https://www.airbnb.ca/c/abergner9?s=8 Our Apartment in Kiev: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/17757878 We were nearby, in terms of short walking distance, many great restaurants, pubs, cafes, malls and grocery stores. It was just a short walk from the metro station and we felt safe and comfortable in our neighborhood. The apartment itself had huge ceilings and was very spacious but definitely had a faded 70s and 80s vibe in terms of the furniture, kitchen and bathroom. This we found kind of fascinating and since everything was functioning just fine it was actually kind of cool. What are we up to today? We are up to an apartment tour here in Kiev (Київ). Yeah. We re going to show you yeah our Ukrainian apartment that we ve been staying in for just over a week. And it is right behind through that arch. Yeah, and we re on a beautiful street. Yeah, we really are. Like check out these buildings. It looks like it could be it looks like it could be in Paris or Buenos Aires. Like it is pretty amazing. Alright, so let s watch for traffic and lead the way. I ll follow you. Well, here is the building. Lots of construction happening as you can hear. This building is not quite as nice as the one that we just walked by. You can tell that is has got a bit of faded charm here. A little bit rundown on the outside but it is quite nice inside. We are only on the 2nd floor, which is a nice surprise. Okay, so time for the tour. We ve just come in through the main door and first up is the bathroom. Is the bathroom. We may as well show you the bathroom. We ve got a tub and a shower. You kind of have to climb into this tub. It is pretty high. More than what I am used to. Yeah, the shower is perfectly adequate. I wouldn t say it was my favorite part of this apartment. Like it did the job but um it was okay. It wasn t huge. And moving on to the rest. What have we got? Sink. Toilet. A washing machine which is always super exciting. That is mandatory. That is a must for us now in an AirBNB. We need to have a washing machine. The most exciting part for me is just the sheer size of this place. This is a big a nice big apartment. As you ll see. Tada. This is our living area. And we ve got some lovely teal couches going on. Yeah. Bit of a retro vibe. Definitely a retro vibe. Maybe stuck in the 70s or 80s slightly. If you come this way we ve got our kitchen. We have another table with some chairs and little stools. We have like our coffees and our little snacks here. So I do a bit of cooking here. I just made pasta but look at these pots. Oh yeah. They are like some heavy duty like old fashioned pots. And this kitchen also has like a super 70s 80s feel to it too. Yeah. Check out that. Check out the microwave. Green. Yeah, green. I think there is green color reminds me of vintage I don t know why. Yeah, I don t think this color is so popular anymore. A big fridge. The bedroom. Come in the bedroom. We had a really nice big bed. It was really comfy. final thoughts about this apartment here in Kiev (Київ). We really liked it. The location was fantastic. It was quite central. We were nearby like metro stations. We were nearby parks, restaurants, bars and cafes. Also the other really cool thing was the price. It was in the upper 20s like just under $30 US dollars. We really liked the city and we would have liked to stay in Kiev (Киев) a little bit longer. 1 week flew by. Bye. This is part of our Travel in Ukraine video series showcasing Ukrainian food, Ukrainian culture and Ukrainian cuisine. Aaaand we re back! Check out this epic adventure. I teamed up with Visit Scotland, and Wild about Argyll to live a day in the life of a Scot. After a plane ride to Glasgow, a camper van to Argyll, a boat to the Isle of Mull, and a long drive to a little white house on a Loch, I met Guy Grieve. This man is amazing. He spent a year solo in the Alaskan Wilderness, another year sailing around the world, and now dives to the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean several times a day, hand gathering scallops for his baby, the Ethical Shellfish Company. My assignment was to join him on a typical day out at sea, SCUBA diving in very cold water, with very strong currents. We would be I was tested to the MAX, and left with a serious appreciation and attraction for this style of fishing. Our hands were the fishing equipment, and we did no damage to the ocean because of this. This is such a better way of doing things than the mass harvest of shellfish. Join us as we jump in the cold north Atlantic in search for treasure! This was our first time travelling to the country, so we hardly knew what to expect, though we did have an inkling we’d find churches with onion domes, borsht on every menu, and very cheap prices, but that was it! Well, we found some of that, but we also discovered a fascinating city with ornate architecture, massive Soviet monuments, a completely new cuisine, more churches and monasteries than we ever thought possible, and friendly people despite the language barrier. The following is our travel guide to the city. Now let us share with you 20 things to do in Kiev on your next visit! And that’s a wrap for our visit to Kiev! This was our first time travelling in Ukraine, but we were hooked right from the start. This destination felt very underrated with few tourists around, yet we were surrounded by beautiful architecture, there were churches galore to visit, the cuisine was hearty and filling, and everything was super affordable. If you are thinking of travelling to Kiev, we hope this video was able to give you a taste of what it’s like. If you have any other suggestions of things to do in Kiev, that we may have missed, feel free to share your tips and suggestions with travellers in the comments. Julianne Moore brings new life to her beloved family home. The Oscar-winning actress lights up the big screen in 2017 with a hat-trick of high-profile films: Todd Haynes’s Wonderstruck, George Clooney’s Suburbicon, and Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Moore fell in love with her West Village NYC townhouse 15 years ago. At the time, the five-story house had been carved up into apartments, but the original front-and-back-parlor configuration was intact, as were the floors, shutters, fireplaces, and staircase. The renovation was orchestrated by her husband Bart Freundlich s architect brother, Oliver Freundlich, and his then-partners Ben Bischoff and Brian Papa. The makeover lasted a year and a half, after which the actress stocked the house with a George Nakashima cocktail table, lamps by Isamu Noguchi, a Florence Knoll credenza with rattan doors, and a host of un-pedigreed but sympathetic vintage finds. As months and years passed, the actress expanded her collections, refined the rooms they inhabit and implemented an extensive redesign of her garden by Brian Sawyer of the AD100 firm Sawyer | Berson (AD, March 2012). She moved the living room downstairs, where it could serve as a casual, semi-cloistered family hangout, and brought the kitchen upstairs. “I cannot recommend more strongly putting your kitchen somewhere with lots of natural light. It changed everything. The transformative spatial inversion—again executed by brother-in-law Oliver Freundlich—may have taken liberties with period orthodoxy, but the effect is anything but jarring. The kitchen feels like an inviting social space, centered on a slender Parsons-style table (custom-made to fit the room’s proportions) that sits atop a Moroccan carpet. Cooking and storage functions are held to the perimeter. “I don’t really like traditional kitchen cabinets or islands, so I wanted everything to feel like furniture. I copied the hood from a Vincent Van Duysen design I had seen. I met him not long afterward, and I copped to stealing his design,” Moore says. As part of the latest spatial reorganization, Moore moved her office from the front parlor on the main floor, where foot traffic and street noise were frequent distractions, to a quieter room on an upper floor. She works at a Pierre Jeanneret desk, sitting in a Jeanneret chair, beneath a Paavo Tynell hanging light. The bookshelves beside the desk neatly encapsulate the Julianne Moore story: Family photographs mingle amicably with her Academy Award and a bevy of other professional laurels, alongside stacks of old decorating magazines and monographs on the work of her favorite designers. A la cornue range stars in the kitchen, beneath a minimalist hood by Best. In the kitchen, a Jack Pierson photograph hangs above a custom-made cabinet by ivory build with Vola sink fittings. Custom table; vintage French chairs and Moroccan rug. A Noguchi lantern hangs from the original molded ceiling in the living room of Julianne Moore’s New York townhouse. a Sally England cotton rope arch hangs against a wall painted in Farrow & Ball’s pitch black, and a George Nakashima table sits atop a Moroccan rug from the Nazmiyal collection. Martin Eisler chairs; Kawai piano; Paavo Tynell lamp; vintage Florence Knoll cabinet. A Nan Goldin photograph hangs in the master bath. Kohler tub with Carrara marble surround; Grohe fittings. Cabinet by Willy Van Der Meeren. A Louise Bourgeois artwork hangs over the upstairs living room s black marble mantel. In the downstairs living room, Edelman leather covers the Harvey Probber sofa and vintage ottoman. Vintage Danish chair and Eames rocker in sheepskin; Carl Auböck side table. Custom-made bed sits on an Odegard rug. Triangle Charlotte Perriand stool; Paavo Tynell floor lamp; Axel Einar Hjorth chair; David Armstrong Photograph; Wyeth sconces. The second is already defined in terms of a certain number of oscillations of a photon of the ground state hyperfine splitting energy of Cesium, the meter is then defined as how far light travels in a particular fraction of a second, and hopefully soon, the kilogram will be defined either using the Avogadro approach of counting silicon atoms in a sphere, or using the Watt (Kibble) Balance approach of measuring Planck s constant, h, as used in the formula E=hf for the energy of a photon, which relates to mass via Einstein s famous E=mc^2. The best way to take in the spectacular Dubai landscape is from 10,000 feet in the air—at least, according to skydiver Jarrett Martin. With over 1,000 jumps in the city under his belt, he should know. After an accident left him without use of his legs, Jarrett didn’t let his love of skydiving wane. Thanks to adaptations made to his landing style and modified equipment, Jarrett is still able to fly high and free. This Great Big Story is by Dubai (http://www.visitdubai.ae). Good sound is easy to miss because, usually, you re not paying attention to it. You re just simply, "in the story." But, sound recordists and engineers need to have a lot of technical know-how as well as an instinct for story to help immerse us in the world of the film. In today s episode, Lily Gladstone talks to us about Sound Production. *** Produced in collaboration with PBS Digital Studios: http://youtube.com/pbsdigitalstudios *** Want to find Crash Course elsewhere on the internet?
