This is the side of the elephant tourism industry they don t want you to know about. If you are planning to travel to South East Asia and Thailand for a vacation or your gap year, please be careful where you spend your money. One thing is certain, when traveling you will see businesses for elephant treks, elephant rides, and elephant shows where elephants play soccer, paint, and do unnatural tricks. Rather than getting that picture for Instagram or social media of you riding an elephant, consider choosing to spend your money at sanctuaries where the elephants are able to live and behave more naturally. If the tourist money is flowing to nature reserves and elephant rescues instead of rides and shows, the market will change itself and life will improve for these gentle animals. Join us in Lviv, Ukraine for a Ukrainian food review as we sample a number of different traditional ukrainian dishes such as banosh and varenyky along with eating pork leg and a ukrainian style cheesecake for dessert just to name a few. Our goal was to find a traditional style of Ukrainian restaurant with an interesting atmosphere and great Ukrainian cuisine. After doing a bit of research we settled on a place called 7 Piggies serving up traditional Ukrainian food. The following is a list of all of the food items we sampled in Lviv, Ukraine: (sorry we forgot to do price point so we ve listed the prices below straight from the website menu of the restaurant) 1) Banosh (Банош) or Banusz with egg, brynza cheese and pork fat (shkvarky) - 45 2) Kremslyky (КРЕМЗЛИКИ В ГЛЕЧИКУ) bread basket bowl Ukrainian Potato Pancakes with mushroom sauce- 134 3) Pork Leg with mustard 7 Piggies style (ГОМІЛОЧКА “СІМ ПОРОСЯТ”) - 95 per 100 grams 4) Varenyky black dumplings (ПЕЛЬМЕНІ “ВІД ВУЙКА КОЦЬО”) - 67 5) Ukrainian cheesecake (ТОРТ “СИРНИК”) - 47 Drink: Ukrainian dry red wine possibly from Odessa Seven piggies (Сім поросят) Traditional Ukrainian Restaurant Address: Stepana Bandery St, 9, L viv, Lviv Oblast, Ukraine, 79000 Phone:+380 322 975 558 Hours: 10AM to 10PM (daily) website: http://7piggies.com.ua/en/ GEAR WE USE Olympus OM-D E-M5 II: http://amzn.to/1OchS7t Canon G7X: http://amzn.to/1YdjsYX Olympus 14-150mm II Lens: http://amzn.to/1Y79zeM Rode Video Mic GO: http://amzn.to/1WDKtVM Joby Gorilla Pod: http://amzn.to/1PgoY5F SanDisk 16GB Extreme Pro: http://amzn.to/25KEErs SOCIAL MEDIA & TRAVEL BLOGS AUDREY: blog: http://thatbackpacker.com/ instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thatbackpacker/ facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thatbackpacker twitter: https://twitter.com/ThatBackpacker SAMUEL: blog: http://nomadicsamuel.com/ facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nomadicsamuel twitter: https://twitter.com/NomadicSamuel instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nomadicsamuel/ Ukrainian Food Review - 5 traditional dishes to eat in Lviv, Ukraine: It is lunchtime here in Lviv (Львів) and we tried to find the most traditional Ukrainian restaurant that we could and that is how we ended up at Seven Piggies (Сім поросят) and yeah I can tell you taxidermy is really popular. Lots of stuffed animals. She brought us something called Banusz and I believe this is some kind of sheep s cheese (brynza) with like looks like bacon so I m just going to try it on bread. Sam with the fancy waterwheel right behind him. Right behind me. Alright, time to try this. Banosh (Банош). We also ordered wine. And we got a bread basket. And yeah, usually I found when you order a bread baskets here in Ukraine (Україна) you get both brown and white bread which is cool. We got a Cabernet it is made from the Ukraine and most of the wine from Ukraine apparently comes from Odessa. We ve ordered something called Kremslyky (КРЕМЗЛИКИ В ГЛЕЧИКУ) and I need to break this baby. I can t actually lift the bread basket off. So in here we ve got some pork. We have potato pancakes (КРЕМЗЛИКИ В ГЛЕЧИКУ) . We have this like creamy sauce with dill and carrots and garlic and it all looks really really good. I ve now had it about 3 or 4 times and it is dish now that whenever we go out and order like traditional Ukrainian food (українська кухня). It is a stample. They have actually named this dish after the restaurant and it is the 7 pigs and it is a huge pork leg (ГОМІЛОЧКА “СІМ ПОРОСЯТ”). Oh, this meat looks so tender. Actually it is not a cheese sauce it is a mustard sauce. Oh, it has got a kick to it. Yeah. Totally different than what I thought. Another side dish we ordered is Varenyky (ПЕЛЬМЕНІ “ВІД ВУЙКА КОЦЬО”) which are the dumplings but these ones are black. Yeah. So we haven t had this before. It looked interesting. Yeah, we ve never tried the black dumplings (ПЕЛЬМЕНІ “ВІД ВУЙКА КОЦЬО”). All I know is that they are stuffed with pork and veal. Thankfully dessert is a smaller portion than everything else because yeah we re stuffed. We re stuffed. And this is like a Ukrainian cake style of cheesecake (ТОРТ “СИРНИК”). And it has got like a chocolate topping and I think I ve been able to see what might potentially be dried pieces of fruit in the middle. Cheesecake with raisins. That is so good. Because like this is just like pure cheesecake. There isn t really a bottom layer. It is just pure dense thick cheesecake (ТОРТ “СИРНИК”). Just the way I like it. Since the 1980s, the Rubik’s Cube has captivated the minds of puzzle solvers around the globe. But how did one of the world’s most addictive and prolific puzzles come to be? It all began in the beautiful city of Budapest, in the beautiful mind of Ernő Rubik, a design and architecture lecturer looking for a tactile way to teach his students about three-dimensional space. But the story’s real “twist” came when the creator had to engineer a solution to his self-made conundrum. Think you have what it takes to crack the code? Take it up with the master himself. #RubiksCube #Game #Puzzle This Great Big Story was inspired by Genesis. SUBSCRIBE: https://goo.gl/vR6Acb Got a story idea for us? When I landed on the Kintyre Coast in Argyll and Bute, Scotland... I didn t even know Kayak Surfing was a thing that people do on this planet. Adventure travel is my thing. I m always trying to search out the strange and unique activities, but I had never heard a whisper of this one before. When I arrived to meet Andy Craven, I overlooked the man with the kayaks completely, and continued to drive around looking for a guy with surfboards, all I knew I was doing that morning was "surfing". This day turned out to be one of the most fun I ve ever had on the water. It s not an easy sport, but it s a ton of fun. We dressed up in wetsuits, rain jackets, helmets and life jackets and proceeded the paddle headfirst into a pretty big swell. Within the first 5 minutes we flipped, but that turned out to be a big part of the fun. Getting tumbled and flipped by the ocean was such a wild ride, and when we did end up catching waves it just felt like a bonus. This HAS to go on your bucketlist if you are an adventure lover. We had a complete blast! Come join us for breakfast in Ukraine as we review different food items we tried eating at Post office on Drukarska street restaurant (Poshta na Drukarskiy) in Lviv (Львів). Typically a traditional Ukrainian breakfast might include savory items such as borscht and dumplings but since we ve shown these Ukrainian dishes on some of other food videos in Kiev we decided to try a more contemporary Ukrainian breakfast in Lviv, Ukraine by samplings some sweet meals. The inside of this restaurant features old fashioned postcards and looks like an old post office. What we had for breakfast in Lviv, Ukraine: 1) Cappuccino 2) Crepes with berries 3) Pancakes with fruit and cinnamon 4) Deep-fried cookies with custard (Ukraine: Verguny (Вергуны) & Polish: faworki or chruściki) Post office on Drukarska street restaurant (Poshta na Drukarskiy) Address: Drukarska Street, 3, L viv, Lviv Oblast, Ukraine, 79000 Hours: 10AM to 12AM (daily) Phone: +380 50 434 7148 GEAR WE USE Olympus OM-D E-M5 II: http://amzn.to/1OchS7t Canon G7X: http://amzn.to/1YdjsYX Olympus 14-150mm II Lens: http://amzn.to/1Y79zeM Rode Video Mic GO: http://amzn.to/1WDKtVM Joby Gorilla Pod: http://amzn.to/1PgoY5F SanDisk 16GB Extreme Pro: http://amzn.to/25KEErs SOCIAL MEDIA & TRAVEL BLOGS AUDREY: blog: http://thatbackpacker.com/ instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thatbackpacker/ facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thatbackpacker twitter: https://twitter.com/ThatBackpacker SAMUEL: blog: http://nomadicsamuel.com/ facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nomadicsamuel twitter: https://twitter.com/NomadicSamuel instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nomadicsamuel/ Breakfast in Lviv, Ukraine travel food video transcript: it is breakfast time here in Lviv (Львів) and we ve ended up at the coolest cafe ever. It is themed like a post office. There is basically mailboxes everywhere & lots of postcards. You have the little like envelope feeders on the doors. It is so cool. We re going to head in, have a bite of food. We re inside the cafe our food orders have been placed. Cappuccinos have arrived. We weren t even planning to come here because technically this place specializes in pastas and beers but the one cafe we had walked into first was totally packed. We saw they had a little breakfast section. I mean the place looks so cool. We re like yeah let s eat here. So let s try that. While you re trying that something to keep in mind while traveling in Ukraine is that we ve noticed in both Kyiv (Kiev - Київ - Киев) and now Lviv (Львів) that if you like if there is a really popular restaurant and you just show up like on the weekend. You need a reservation. A few thoughts on Ukrainian breakfast. When we were kind of researching about what was a typical breakfast in the Ukraine there didn t seem to be like a exact standard. You could have something like borscht, there could be dumplings but we ve already shown that in some other videos so we decided to just come and have more of a contemporary Ukrainian breakfast. In front of me I ve got these crepes with apple and walnuts. And just look at the way they ve like folded them and like twirled them. Like it is so pretty and it has cottage cheese as well. Icing sugar, cinnamon. Like this is a work of art. I almost don t want to dig into it. It is breakfast and we are hungry. It looks like a little flower almost. It looks like berries. I thought this one was apple but maybe we got berries. The other one would be apple then. Yeah, because the other one has a cinnamon flavor smell. That is really good. Tasty. I have to say we have a bit of a sweet tooth this morning. Haha. Both of us ordered sweet breakfasts. Yeah. And it is so nice with this like cottage cheese and all of the icing sugar and cinnamon mixed in together. Sam didn t want to miss out on the Crêpe. The next dish is a stack of little pancakes here. Dusted with icing sugar if you look down. Yeah. And it has got um raspberries, it has a lot of cinnamon which I m really smelling and enjoying. Apparently this is going to be a sour cream based sauce. Those pancakes are nice and fluffy. Apparently pancakes and crepes were not enough so this looks like what it is like deep-fried dough maybe? Coated in like sugar, cinnamon and it comes with a little sauce bowl here. This is like a nice creamy vanilla custard. Super sweet. That came to 207 which is just under $8 US dollars. That was for two cappuccinos and 3 basically mains. 3 breakfast mains including crispy fried cookies, pancakes & crepes. We re full. We d highly recommend this place if you re looking for a nice breakfast here in Lviv, Ukraine. This is part of our Travel in Ukraine video series showcasing Ukrainian food, culture and Ukrainian cuisine. Join us for train ride in Ukraine as we travel in first class from Kiev to Lviv in this travel vlog. After leaving our apartment in Kiev we took the metro to the main train station and then had quite a bit of time to kill. When we boarded the train we were really happy we bought a first class ticket as it gave us lots of room to stretch out, sleep, get caught up on work and just overall feel comfortable as we enjoyed the complimentary tea service. Upon arriving in Lviv our AirBNB host picked us up and after dropping off our bags in the apartment we went out for a dinner that included Ukrainian dumplings. It is almost time to check out of our apartment here in Kiev (Киев). Our host is going to be coming any minute. Any minute. We have to finish packing up. Like what happened to the what we had 9 nights just boom. We had over a week here. That is one of the fastest stays we ve ever had anywhere. The time just flew by. We were tired, we also had a lot of work to do and we also just really enjoyed being here. Two stops to the train station. Let s go. But there is going to be a nice long escalator ride to get to the platform. Yeah. These escalators here in Kyiv (Київ) are epic. So we ve made it to the train station. Tickets in hand. And we ve just looked at the departure board. I would like to point out that is the worst departure board I ve ever seen in my life. First of all the letters are like bright red and neon green. And you stare at it for like 3 seconds and it starts blinding you. Our train is leaving in about a half hour so we re back in the station. We are platform 2. Now we just have to find that. It is quite a grand station I must say. It is beautiful. We ve got our seats and what is really cool is we upgraded to 1st class. It wasn t that much more. We ll let you know the price of the ticket a little bit later on. If you take a look over here you can see how it has different classes. If it was second class there would be 6 people but because it is only first there is 4 of us and that gives us lots of rooms for our baggage. We ll show you as we go in. That is where we are sitting. We have basically those 3 seats on the bottom. Alright, so now would be a good time to talk about the tickets. And it is noisy. The train is just taking off. Anyways, we paid just over 500 which is about roughly $20 US dollars and this is for the fastest train possible to Lviv (Львів). And it takes about five hours and forty minutes so we re going to be on here for a little while. But it is quite comfortable. I m glad that we paid for 1st class because we re going to be able to get some work done. Apparently, there is tea service so hopefully we get that too. And just like that we ve been teleported to our apartment here in Lviv (Львів). Um, so yeah we arrived right on time. Our AirBNB host was waiting for us at the train station. We hopped in his car and he drove us here which is so rare. No one has ever picked us up. Which was super awesome. Um but yeah we re really really hungry so we are going to save the apartment tour for another day. Another video. Right now we need dinner. Let s go. We ll take you along for food though. So we are staying in a super residential neighborhood so there are not a whole lot of restaurants around but we found a hotel and they have a restaurant. So we re in here. Right now we are the only guests. The last couple just left but they have like all of these animals. Looking at me everywhere. Look. There is a cow looking at you. Food is here. Food is here. I m so hungry. Like I said I was water fasting earlier on. 24 hours without food so I m ready to eat. This is varenyky. The Ukrainian dumplings. They are delicious. And this is it. We re ending off the video. We re tired. We are really excited to be in this city (Lviv) and we look forward to sharing some videos with you guys soon. But for now goodnight. This is part of our Travel in Ukraine video series showcasing Ukrainian food, Ukrainian culture and Ukrainian cuisine. Music in this video courtesy of BenSound: https://www.bensound.com/
The Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis are a strange natural phenomenon that can only be witnessed in the most northern regions of the globe. We had the once in a lifetime opportunity to go to Yellowknife Canada and watch the best aurora of the entire year so far. It was truly a magical moments that no words will ever be able to describe. This is a moment I will cherish for the rest of my life. In both her essays and her fiction, Virginia Woolf shapes the slippery nature of subjective experience into words, while her characters frequently lead inner lives that are deeply at odds with their external existence.
