There s nothing like diving off your boat into a crystal blue Mediterranean ocean. Sailing the Mediterranean has exceeded our expectations thus far. Also, I certainly wasn t expecting to see a FLYING DINGHY fly past my window as I was having a shower onboard. Being out at sea and out of range a lot of the time, we seem to miss out on the launching of the latest technologies/fashion/tv shows.. so we were quite shocked to see such a contraption fly by, one mellow afternoon. Someone please fill me in?? What is the deal? Leave us a comment. The merging of two neutron stars was detected by gravitational waves and then by telescopes in all parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. This is a historic detection as it demonstrates: - the first gravitational waves detected from inspiraling neutron stars - the first joint observation by gravitational wave and electromagnetic wave astronomy - identification of a gamma ray burst in conjunction with merging neutron stars - how gravitational waves and gamma rays can be used together to locate their source All evidence so far indicates that the data support General Relativity. They include gravitational waves (pale arcs); a near-light-speed jet that produced gamma rays (magenta); expanding debris from a "kilonova" that produced ultraviolet (violet), optical and infrared (blue-white to red) emission; and, once the jet directed toward us expanded into our view from Earth, X-rays (blue). Credit: NASA s Goddard Space Flight Center/CI Lab Virgo Helps Localize Gravitational-Wave Signals Sky localizations of gravitational-wave signals detected by LIGO beginning in 2015 (GW150914, LVT151012, GW151226, GW170104), and, more recently, by the LIGO-Virgo network (GW170814, GW170817). After Virgo came online in August 2017, scientists were better able to localize the gravitational-wave signals. The background is an optical image of the Milky Way. The localizations of GW150914, LVT151012, and GW170104 wrap around the celestial sphere, so the sky map is shown with a translucent dome. Credit: LIGO/Virgo/NASA/Leo Singer (Milky Way image: Axel Mellinger) Variety of Gravitational Waves and a Chirp The signal measured by LIGO and Virgo from the neutron star merger GW170817 is compared here to previously detected binary black hole mergers. All signals are shown starting at 30 Hertz, and the progression of GW170817 is shown in real time, accompanied by its conversion to audio heard at the end of the movie. GW170817 was observable for more than 30 times longer than any previous gravitational-wave signal. Financial support for the Advanced LIGO project was led by the NSF with Germany (Max Planck Society), the U.K. (Science and Technology Facilities Council) and Australia (Australian Research Council) making significant commitments and contributions to the project. More than 1,200 scientists and some 100 institutions from around the world participate in the effort through the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, which includes the GEO Collaboration and the Australian collaboration OzGrav. Additional partners are listed at http://ligo.org/partners.php The Virgo collaboration consists of more than 280 physicists and engineers belonging to 20 different European research groups: six from Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in France; eight from the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) in Italy; two in the Netherlands with Nikhef; the MTA Wigner RCP in Hungary; the POLGRAW group in Poland; Spain with the University of Valencia; and the European Gravitational Observatory, EGO, the laboratory hosting the Virgo detector near Pisa in Italy, funded by CNRS, INFN, and Nikhef.

Ask This Old House General Contractor Tom Silva teaches a young fan how to build her first tool box. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Time: 2-3 hours Cost: $75 Skill Level: Beginner Tools List for Building a Tool Box: Hand saw Hammer Pencil Combination square Drill driver with 1” spade bit Palm sander Shopping List: 1x5 select pine 1x10 select pine 1” Dowel Box nails 80-100 grit sandpaper Wood glue Steps: 1. To determine the correct length for your tool box, use the longest tool in your tool box as a guide and mark just beyond it on a piece of 1x5 pine. 2. Cut the board on the mark using the hand saw, making sure that your shoulder is perfectly lined up with the edge of the saw to ensure a straight cut. 3. Repeat this process for the other side of the tool box. 4. Cut the ends to desired length using 1x10 pine. 5. The length of the bottom of the tool box should be the length of the sides, plus the thickness of the two ends. Mark and cut the bottom to that dimension. 6. To dress up the ends of the toolbox, cut the tops of each end piece at an angle using the hand saw. 7. Drill holes in the two ends of the tool box using the drill driver to accept the handle. Chose a bit that matches the size of the dowel you have and drill through both end pieces at the same time to ensure the hole is aligned correctly. Drill most of the way through both pieces, but to prevent chipping, flip the boards over and drill from the other side to complete the holes. 8. Sand the edges of all your cuts using the palm sander. Start with the lower grit and work your way up. 9. Assemble the sides, bottom, and ends together using wood glue and box nails. 10. Once the box is assembled, slide the dowel through the holes. Secure it to the box by nailing from the top of each end through the dowel. Resources: All the supplies and materials for this project, including 1x5 and 1x10 select pine, hand saws, hammers, and dowels are sold at home centers. Tom held the box together with Gorilla Wood Glue, which is manufactured by Gorilla Glue (http://www.gorillatough.com ) After completing the tool box, Tom included some tools that he thought made a good starter tool kit. These included a hand saw, coping saw, tape measure, scribe set, torpedo level, hammer, assorted screwdrivers, chisels, block plane, carpenter’s pencil, ear protection, and eye protection. All of these are available at home centers and hardware stores. About Generation Next: This Old House’s Generation NEXT initiative shines a light on the urgent need for young people to enter the building trades and fill the skills gap in America today. “There’s a critical need for people in home construction,” says the This Old House master carpenter Norm Abram. The initiative has involved recruiting apprentices—some with no skills, some with a few years under their tool belts—to work alongside the TOH TV pros. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won t find in a typical Lviv tourism brochure, Lviv itinerary or Lviv, Ukraine city tour. 20 Things to do in Lviv, Ukraine Travel Guide Video Script: Today’s video is all about our visit to Lviv. Having come straight from Kiev, Lviv offered a real change of scenery. The city was much smaller, more walkable, and it looked distinctly Central European. In some ways, it reminded us of a smaller version of Krakow or Prague, though a little rough around the edges. But enough about first impressions; let us actually show you around. In this video we’re going to take you on a grand tour of the city and highlight 20 things to do in Lviv on your next visit, so let’s get started. Like in Kiev, we quickly discovered that Lviv is a city of churches, so our next stop was the Church of the Holy Communion. After our sushi lunch, we visited the Bernardine Church in the south end of the Old Town; followed by the Latin Cathedral, which sits in the southwest corner of Market Square; and finally the Jesuit Church, where we stumbled upon yet another wedding! And that’s a wrap for our visit to Lviv, Ukraine. We found this to be a charming city with a completely different look and feel from Kiev, so we’re glad we added this stop to our itinerary. If you’re short on time, this is a great destination for a weekend escape. If you have any other suggestions of cool things to do around Lviv, feel free to share those with fellow travellers in the comments below. Wishing you happy travels! Who says travel ends the moment you have kids? https://thetravelintern.com/leialauren-the-travelling-momo-twin-babies-from-singapore/ At 2 years old, Leia and Lauren (@leialauren) have been on over 15 overseas trips; from chasing the Northern Lights in Iceland, to self-drive road trips in Tasmania, to wandering within tea plantations in Bandung, Indonesia. If that itself doesn’t bring up enough envy, at age 2, they also have a (growing) fan base of 300k on Instagram following them on their adorable adventures. But we all know, behind every cute baby picture is a super parent who on top of keeping the babies alive and happy, have somehow managed to do all that while travelling. Travelling really doesn’t have to stop the moment you have kids. We check in with Amber and Peter (the super parents of Leia and Lauren), who have been travelling frequently even before the twins were born, to share some of their superpowers (we mean stories) on being travellers before and after kids. They also share their views on why travelling with infants isn’t as expensive as we think! Learn about The Travel Intern Programme: ► https://thetravelintern.com/about-tra... IMPORTANT PLEASE READ: Before deciding on visiting Currumbin and "holding" a koala, I did my research. We decided on visiting Currumbin because we believe in what they are doing to rescue and save injured wildlife. We even visited the hospital they have there and witnessed an operation on an injured Lorikeet. At the sanctuary, I spoke with the lady who you ll see in the video about the koalas personality and how they respond to being held. This lady works day in an out with these rescued koalas and knows them very well. The lady assured me that the koala I would get to hold (who s name is Emily) was born and raised at the sanctuary and has interacted with humans her entire life. You should have seen the love the lady and Emily shared. Those two were nearly inseparable, kissing each other and resting their heads on one another. It may look like I m holding Emily, but in fact I m standing very still with my hands in a certain position, letting Emily hang on and interact with me rather than the other way around. At one point she starred me in the face and pressed her nose on mine. I just about died. I felt good about the experience and that Emily looked and felt quite content, curious even! I wouldn t however have done this just anywhere, and I sure would never hold a wild koala. The reason why I m telling you all of this is because I care and love all animals and never want to promote their exploitation but rather conservation. Please before you decide to interact with any animals in any country, do your research beforehand. So... what do Directors even do? That s not an easy question to answer but today Lily will do her best. Generally, directors are the driving creative force behind a movie, deciding what kind of cinematic world the story will take place in, how the performances will fit into that, and how the camera will capture that world. But, there s a lot more to discuss on this episode of Crash Course Film Production with Lily Gladstone. *** Produced in collaboration with PBS Digital Studios: http://youtube.com/pbsdigitalstudios The Latest from PBS Digital Studios: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1mtdjDVOoOqJzeaJAV15Tq0tZ1vKj7ZV *** Want to find Crash Course elsewhere on the internet?
